There is an excellent review from a French source. Comparisons between scans from the 4990, 4870 and 3200. If you can't read French you can still appreciate the scans, just bear in mind that gauche is left and adroit is right. so left to right.

The reviewer concludes that the 4990 is a modest improvement over the 4870, however, the scan comparisons look fairly signficant to my eye. Hope this helps.

The photo-i review, gold-standard in scanner reviews as far as I can tell, for the Epson 4990 is now underway (http://www.photo-i.co.uk/Reviews/interactive/Epson%204990/Page%201.htm).

Hopefully pretty soon the film scan pages will be complete.

Looks good, as far as it went. What was neat was the ability of digital ice to remove fold marks in the two photographs of the women.

Sounds like the reviewer hasn't yet tested film, or hasn't yet written about what he learned. The link to that portion of the review isn't yet functional. Will look forward to the completed review.
