My stack of TMY in 4x5 is running low and as the stuff has got pretty pricy here in Europe I am looking into something a bit cheaper. I ran into the RPX400 film, which looks promising. I am searching for information on this film, but most seems to be limited to the smaller formats. Is there any experience here with this film in the 4x5 size, preferably using rotation development and contracting and expanding development?

Hi!

I know this thread is quite old but ... no answer?
I'm also interested in this film for the same reasons.
Any experience here?

Thank you!
Happy new year ;-)

Hi!

Thank you ... but none of those said anything about experiences with RPX 400 ;-)

Cheers

Hello,
As far as I know, RPX400, is a classical emulsion type.
Could be similar to Tri-X, but not TMY.
Sorry, did not use it before.
Remember, I've watched a video YouTube about this film from PhotoKina 2016.
You may search for that YouTube.

I've used it in 35mm and 4x5 and it is a good film rated at box speed. It has a similar look to Tri-X, but slightly more contrast. The big downside in 4x5 is the incredibly thin base. Loading into dark slides is more difficult than Kodak or Ilford sheet film and I found loading into my Jobo 2509 reel impossible - the film base is not stiff enough to stay in the reel. If you plan to tray develop or have a combiplan then you'll be fine.

I recommend you try it, depending on your develop workflow.
