cable shutter release: conical versus straight connector...

For both the Graphex #2 and the Copal #1--is this cable release suitable:

More to the point: are some threaded connectors conical while others are straight.

We inserted the connector into the Graphex lens release--naturally, it seats only so far...is this acceptable?

That's fairly normal, the conical ends of cable releases are reasonably standard but the bit it screws into on a camera or shutter varies a bit. The release arms on some old shutters are tapped with a straight thread but the conical cable releases work perfectly.

Dean, that Gepe cable release is correct for those shutters. Tapered threads engage securely with only a few turns. Straight threads for cable releases have been non-standard for many decades on most cameras.

there are old shutters out there that require a straight thread..I'm thinking old compounds maybe .. a tapered will not hold in them

I try to hold onto any straight thread cable release I come across just for that reason

Looking at a Copal 1 shutter release hole is appears to be straight thread. I assume a tapered male thread simply fastens faster.

I just got two sets of 5-44 straight taps. Don't bother with cheap taps, the ones I got are already rusting and look terrible. However the same source had very nice ones for 7 times the cost, but well worth it.

I will use them in an attempt to fix an Ilex 5 which lost it's shutter release threading insert. It does have the chrome steel surround.

Suggestions welcome.

I regularly tap the release arms on TP (& similar) roller blind shutters with straight taps and never have a problem using them with the tapered ends on cables.

Looking at Copal 0, 1 & 3 shutters I'd agree with Randy that the thread for the cable release looks almost straight on the Copal #0 & #1 slightly more tapered on the #3, straight on my Compounds, more noticeable taper on my Compurs., It doesn't seem to matter as the tapered ends on cable releases fit all.

My good taps and dies are susceptible to rust because they are high-carbon-steel. And they were really expensive. The difficulty in buying inexpensive tools is because we cannot know just what grade of steel they are, or what kind of tempering was applied - until they break! I hate it when that happens. An old-school machinist I know can tell the composition of metals by grinding it, reading the spark color and pattern.

10 disc. 10 Screw lock.

However Gepe Pro is better for Ilex.

Linhof has a smooth, tapered, thread less release to fit their quick socket. But they also sell that conical tip that you have to convert their threaded releases to fit the quick socket properly. No Linhof threaded release comes with that nipple as a standard item. So if yours came that way it was probably a used one.
