Pictorial shots of Prickly Pear cactus = Prictorialism. It's cactus bloom time in the desert. Hugo Meyer Kino Plasmat:

Seeing the title, I was assuming bad mouthing of Pictorialism. I don't think your nomenclature is going to catch on :-)

Nice photos, BTW

Thanks all. I'll have to shoot the Hugo Meyer some more, lets see, still 15min of light....poof, I'm out there!

(some time later)....and...back! Here is another shot with the Kino Plasmat, at dusk, with the light almost gone. I like the first one's lighting a little better. These prickly pears are amazing to shoot macro, so beautiful, so painful to walk among them in flip flops.

Hi Ritchie, you are right, I started this thread to be about cactus taken with soft focus. It's just that the blooms appear for a very short time, so I have to grab shots with what camera I have. These last were with a 1950 Nikkor 50/1.4, which can be a little soft wide open. But it was too bright for wide open.

Here is one I just took by dawn's early light, with a Kern 25mm 1.5 lens, more Pictorial to me. I'll get the Dallmeyer tiny Petzval out next, and I'll try again soon!

The middle one above is great. The repeating patterns. I confess I glanced at the others (remember I live in the environment of cacti) but I stopped and spent a good couple of minutes on the one in the middle. It works like an abstract. It isn't what it seems and yet, clearly, it is.

A local photographer has been giving me some of his film gear as he's not using it much any more (much of it not at all in the last 20-30). Today I received some portra160 in 120 size and I've got a TLR from him...maybe I should go hunting cactus flowers. He also gave me some Ilford Chromogenic B.W. film. I'd kind of thought to start with that, but then the cactus season will be over. Choices!

Thank you Mark. I didn't realize while shooting through the small screen of the panasonic gm1. Then a generous amount of Vibrance and a little dehaze etc did the job.
I think i will give another try these days as spring doesn't last long here.

It is a small magnifying glass with a diameter of about 35mm and of 110mm focal length aprox. Mounted on a cardboard tube with a stop of 10mm in dia. so, something like an f11 and 220mm equivalent for FF cameras.

I shot this some time back hand-held with a Pentax K1000 but didn't didn't think much of it because of the camera motion and/or the slightly out-of-focus look. I ran across it again this evening after admiring a An October Day in the White Mountains, 1854 - an oil on canvas painting by John Fredrick Kensett and changed my opinion of it.

After a 16 month hiatus (short answer: Cancer sucks! Long answer: Cancer really really sucks, and chemo is a pain!), I'm able to shoot with my Ebony again, so I took the Imagon and a 135 Symmar to the Arizona Cactus Garden here on the Stanford Campus and shot four sheets. First, the two with the Imagon (both with the 7.7/9.5 disk at H7.7):

Drew,
Sorry that you have cancer. Lord have mercy!

I enjoy this thread and moved to TX over a year ago and even have cacti in my yard, but haven’t pointed a LF camera at them yet!

I especially like the ?yucca? picture. I like the sense of movement and the contrast/value range. I suspect that b/w is part of the key to it, in color the dried out tips would be too distracting.

Hopefully I've gone from have cancer to had cancer, but it'll be another 2 years of scans etc. before I get the "cancer free" sticker. Everyone: get your colonoscopy! Get one now! (Well, maybe not while at your computer, but you know...)

Anyway, the late evening light was quite nice in color, and probably would have worked on the spiky plant (I think it's the "tree yucca" as listed on the map here: https://lbre.stanford.edu/bgm/documents/arizona-garden). The contrast was insane, and I was worried after seeing all the clear areas on the negative, but I think it scanned well, and the black parts work OK, even if they lack any detail in them. I should learn the proper names for the "beach ball cactus" and "spiky tree like thing" and "tall, thin, cactus with pretty flowers" etc.

I'm glad to hear that you have survived colon cancer. I believe that I have met you on a LF outing a few years back but do recall you at a print viewing at Tim's house a couple of years back. You seem to be quite young for colon cancer. When I was around your age I started to get polyps and read that 400mg daily of Vitamin D gets rid of them. So I started taking a vitamin D supplement daily (I still do) and the condition disappeared and never came back. For years I put off having a colonoscopy but finally gave in around 10 years ago with no abnormalities. So my doctor put another one off for 10 years and now prescribes the non-invasive test.

Yes, we met at Tim's a few years ago. I was 49 and 9 months when my colon cancer made itself known in April 2017, but a huge tumor like mine (T4a for those who follow those things) would have taken 5-10 years to get to that size. No risk factors, no family history, just bad luck. I'm now taking high doses of vitamin D and calcium, as well as baby aspirin, as they've all been shown to reduce the recurrence of colon cancer. I will also get to "smile for the camera" every 3-5 years for my colonoscopies! Oh goody!

The non-invasive tests are definitely a good idea for everyone's 40th birthday. I wish I had them at 40 and 45, as one of them would have caught my cancer early enough to likely avoid chemo. Cancer was inconvenient, chemo was hell.

Actually I misspoke - it's Calcium w/Vit D supplement that I have been taking and earlier this year I switched to taking 1/2 pill (250mg) daily instead of the 500mg it now comes in. As I said when I started to get polyps I started taking the Calcium supplements and the condition disappeared. But I wasn't drinking milk which, contains 35% of the RDA of calcium, as I now do. Milk, along with the 250 mg supplement and the multivitamin bring the total up to the 100% RDA. But note this article that I just ran across:

Nice. So, original Voigtlander, not the modern stuff. I remember seeing some work on the rangefinder forum with one of those and have to say it has about the most unusual out of focus rendering I've ever seen. You've made great use of it here. It reminds me just a little of something I saw years ago (maybe by you) with a Canon 1.5. But like that lens on steroids.

Thanks, I really like the early efforts to make very fast lenses for 35mm cameras in the 1940s and 1950s. This Nokton 50/1.5 I got on a Prominent exactly 2 years ago. I never shot the camera, I have way too many, and sold it and a couple less famous lenses. Then I started searching for an adapter to put it on Leicas. But I discovered that whereas most adapters cost $20, the Prominent adapters were around $230. After selling the camera, I had less than that much in the lens itself. The reason they are so expensive is they have to have the focusing helical. The Prominent camera does the focus, the lens just rides the mount. I'm a stubborn guy when it comes to prices, and decided to just watch and wait. 2 years later I got an excellent, CNC made Amedeo adapter for Leica M (https://live.staticflickr.com/7850/40565893883_eb8bd3a110_z.jpg), for a good price. I'm enjoying this lens a lot. Stopped down it becomes very sharp. As sharp as a Sumicron easily.

I share your interest in fast lenses, but also like the designs coming out into the 1960's. My interest is for the speed, which I often need when shooting film, but I also have learned that I prefer the look of the earlier lenses. My main users are a mid 30's 5cm 1.5 Sonnar and a 1960's 35mm Summilux. If a more general thread pops up on classic era fast lenses I should have some contributions, but I mosty photograph people, and tend to avoid the prickly ones. I'm enjoying looking through the images here though.

1/100 is what my shutter actually does when set to 1/125. I used the "4x" ND filter on both, and probably should have set the shutter to 1/60. Oh well, it was still fun to get out and shoot for the first time since September. Lockdown and cancer have made it inconvenient to get out and shoot.

A few weeks ago, I took the 250mm Fujinar (single coated Tessar copy) and 250mm Imagon with me to the Arizona Cactus Garden at Stanford, with 3 holders of Rollei RPX 25, and shot the same composition with each lens, trying to match the F-stop and H-stop as best as I could.
They are Fujinar and Imagon in that order for each composition, which should still be pretty obvious.

OK, two more with the Imagon at the Arizona Cactus Garden at Stanford.

The first is without the disk, wide open at f/5.6-ish, which I think works out pretty well, but may be a bit too soft. I did boost the contrast after scanning, and may boost it more, I'm not sure:

The next one is with the H5.8/7.7 disk wide open at H5.8. The subject is backlit by the sun, which causes the spider webs to make those funky horizontal lines that, honest, aren't a defect in development. Also, you can see the "strainer" effect in the "bokeh balls," which I haven't seen yet in anything shot with the Imagon:

I've not been shooting much this year, but I did get 12 exposed sheets between April and early June, so I developed them all at once in nearly expired Adox Rodinal, so they're all thin, but I was able to get decent scans out of them. These 3 are from the last day, June 6th, when I wanted to just use my long lenses, including my new-to-me Fuji 400T.

First, the shot with the 400T, f11, 1/15". Ilford Delta 100 film:

The next one, with a Fuji 300C, turned out pretty well, but I got some bellows squish that caused a bit of vignetting at the bottom from all the front rise, plus I think I put my dark cloth on top and pushed the bellows down a bit. Oops! f13, 1/8". Ilford Delta 100 film.
