Reflections of the Soul. http://invisiblephotographer.asia/2014/09/13/reflectionsofsoul-yangyankang/

Amazing photos taken on a Leica. I have read a lot of Tibet photo books, and this one is the best. It's so good that I imported 7 copies for sale :-)

I haven't been shopping.
Here's (http://flakphoto.com/content/flakphoto-books-of-the-year-2014) Flakphoto's recommendations for 2014.

I need to save up my money for film and paper. But if I did have some spare cash for books, those are some nice suggestions so far!

I've purchased a bunch lately, probably more than is good for me.

Charles Marville: Photographer of Paris - the Met had an exhibiton of his photos last year. The book is excellent, especially if you're interested in 19th century photography.

Japan Sea by Shunji Dodo - a really interesting large format photogrtapher. He did a great book a couple of years ago on Osaka and this new one, recording his journey around the Japan Sea, features all sorts of interesting perspectives.

Paul Strand: Master of Modern Photography - I'd read that a few people thought the reproduced images were printed too dark, but I've got nothing to compare them to and really enjoyed looking at this overview.

Minor White: Manifestations of the Spirit - I'd never realy paid attention to White, mostly because I didn't understand or appreciate his philosophical approach to taking pictures - but I really like this book. Great reproductions and some good essays.

Die Mauer ist Weg! by Mark Power - what a great example of a self punblished photobook. And talk about being in the right place at the right time.

Chewing Gum and Chocolate by Shomei Tomatsu - a book of photos that looks at the impact of westernization and the American miliary on Japan. For me, another wow book. And a great essay for Leo Rubinfien.

Bag Saga Blok by Krass Clement - photographs that Clement has taken over forty yeasr about an area in Copenhagen. The sequencing in this book is incredible - the connections that Clement makes between photos and across pages is, like the rest of his books, really neat to see.

And one more:

Antarktis by Gerry Johansson - I've really liked the work Johansson has done over the last few years in his books like Deutschland and Öglunda (square format and wandering around). in Antarktis, Johansson takes his LF camera to Antarctica and puts together a completely different kind of book. I really admired some of the sublte risks he takes with the layout in this book.

my absolute favorite photographer!

Thanks for the reminder! Truly one of the great landscape photographers, paid high tribute by Ansel Adams for very good reason. A wonderful example of dedication, endurance, passion, and artful compositions.

Merg,

Would love to see your name listed here with a book of your wonderful work! (Hint!)

I recently purchased Michael Kenna's new book "France." I have been making my way through this gorgeous book. I personally think it is a wonderful book, but then I like Kenna's work in general, and this new book is no exception.

I watched "K2, Siren of the Himalayas" which showed some wonderful photographs of the Duke of Abruzzi 1909 expedition. Even on HD the beauty of photographs showed. Worth the time to watch.

As an architectural photographer, I felt this book was required reading. Not sure how recently it was published but new to me! There's some great stuff in there.

Does the reissue of "The Decisive Moment" count?

Mary Alinder's Group F.64 book.

I think in 2014 I received "Trajectories, A Half Century of Portraits" by Martha Casanave.

I can't make recommendations for books published in 2014, I only know the ones I purchased in 2014, and every one was actually published earlier, although one was at least re-printed in 2014.

Since I already have a lot of monographs by the more classic photographers, I have been concentrating on contemporary photography:
"Art And Photograpy," edited by David Campany, Phaidon: "...a survey of photography's place in recent art history."
"Art Photography Now," by Susan Bright, Thames & Hudson: "...survey presents the work of 80 of the most important [contemporary] artist-photographers..."

One older monograph, but purchased in 2014 following Mr. McSavaney's death: "A Photographic Journey, Explorations," by Ray McSavaney.

And one library book (published in 2014!) which I have now, "Landmark, the fields of landscape photography," William Ewing, Thames & Hudson.

And since Richardman recommended one book on Buddhism in Tibet (I looked at the gallery on the promotional website, the 35mm photography was excellent!), I feel the need to make a pitch for a much older (2000) book about Tibetans in exile, "Whispered Prayers," by Stephen Harrison, Talisman Press. This book may be of particular interest for this forum, since all of the photographs are taken with a 7x17 Canham, and they are wonderful.

Yes I have that book, whispered prayers, it's pretty fantastic. My favourites from the last year would be Paul Caponigro's masterworks bought secondhand and Lee friedlanders stems for the best printing I have ever seen. Also elmet by ted Hughes and Fay godwin, but not for the reproductions.

1. Group f.64. Mary Street Alinder.
2. Carleton Watkins, The Stanford Albums
3. The Origins of American Photography 1839-1885: From Daguerreotype to Dry Plate.
4. Impressed by Light. British Photography from Paper Negatives 1840-1860
5. Charles Marville: Photographer of Paris
6. Vittorio Sella: Mountain Photographs1879 – 1909
7. Round Kangchenjunga. Douglas Freshfield 1903

I had purchased 3 & 4 sometime earlier but only read them within the past 12 months and was introduced to Vittorio Sella (6) which I checked out from the library by reading Round Kangchenjunga (7).

My two picks for books published in the last 12 months:

Glen E. Friedman, My Rules. This is one of my favorite photo books I own, just full of pure gold from hip-hop, punk, skateboard and street culture.

Jay Maisel, Light, Gesture and Color. Inspiring. I'm a huge fan of Maisel and this book is worth it just for the images, nevermind all the insight into his process.

Like others I also really enjoyed the Group F.64 book.
