WHO: Large format photographers

WHAT: Photography gathering: making pictures, telling lies, drinking wine, beer, and/or other fine elixirs.

WHERE: Alabama Hills, CA

WHEN: May 15-17, 2015

OTHER: Bring your own cameras, film, tripods, etc. Make your own food, travel, and sleeping arrangements.

Camping is free, but sites are primitive, no restrooms, showers, etc. Plan accordingly. Other accommodations can be made in the town of Lone Pine.

More information will follow as we get a better idea of participants. I will post coordinates for campsite location, etc. We plan on hanging around the Alabama Hills area for the entire weekend, but obviously participants are free to make their own schedules.

Hope to see some new and old faces!

Daniel, the other day I talk to a ranger in the area and he pointed me to the hostel in LP for showers (if that helps any). Dang, I'd have love to go and perhaps stop by Bristlecone again....but already have flights set to go elsewhere.
One of these years will stop by Mt Whitney....

Just confirmed, as it looks right now, I am in. My plan is to leave very early Saturday morning and meet you all there at before sunrise. Just let me know where you plan to start. I'll camp out Saturday evening and leave Sunday mid-morning back home. Food for me is simple, I have a stash of freeze dried stuff already. Just add water.

The colors should "pop" so bring some chromes.

Update: Since we might have a sizable group for this gathering Randy and I decided that setting up at one of the nearby campsites might be worthwhile, since there will be toilets, tables and fire rings. (Bring wood!)

We will be staying at the Tuttle Creek Campground which is a BLM campground located just south of Alabama Hills off Tuttle Creek Rd, and about 4.5 miles SW of Lone Pine, CA.
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Tuttle+Creek+Campground/@36.564934,-118.126199,14z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0xf98e9dede5fa9018

GPS: 36° 33.902'N, 118° 7.527'W

Cost per site is $5/night

For those that are planning on meeting us on Friday morning, we might drop by the town of Keeler for a bit before we get into Alabama Hills... You are free to come out to Keeler as well. We should be there around 11AM. We'll be at the corner of Franklin and Yerington Ave. (Local artist, Craig Marshall's residence). Link here: https://www.360cities.net/fr/image/craig-marshall-keeler-california
(https://www.360cities.net/fr/image/craig-marshall-keeler-california)

We visited Marshall a few years ago and made some WPC portraits of him. So, thought it might be cool to drop by and see if we can check up on him and his yard art.

Keeler sounds pretty cool. I loved the photos Dan and Randy took there last time I was up. I'll try to get there at 11 AM. Stop laughing Jim.

Laura, Dessert always is an excellent idea! If a group does materialize and is staying there, I'll camp at the Tuttle Creek Campground too. For the record, I would much prefer to stay out in the rocks where it is dark and you can see lots of stars. but maybe not the best thing in the rain. If the weather clears up (or the major deluge misses) I am quite likely to want to stay out in the rocks. I get spotty cell reception out there so hard to communicate any spot I might end up at. My sprint is terrible but I have a GSM phone I can activate on a limited usage. Is T-Mobile or AT&T any better?

Well, what a weekend! Best shower ever after returning on Sunday (if you know what I mean).

Thank you to everyone for coordinating this outing and for making me feel welcome. Landscape is an area in which I struggle with inspiration and vision. This trip I tried to keep an open mind and work to try to "see" landscape in different ways. In respect to LF I shot some 4x5 (yet to be processed) as well as 6x6 using my Haselblad using filters which I don't normally use. I hope to have this film processed in the next few weeks.

In the meantime I shot some film of my fellow photographers doing their thing in this incredible environment trying to show just how amazing this experience was. I tried to get everyone but I know that I missed a few while I was shooting other areas or lost in my own thoughts. I apologize to those that I missed. Next time.

All shot in 35mm on a Leica M4-2 using a Russian Sonnar knock-off.

Thank you. Sorry, no grad filter was used. I can share with you what all I did and hopefully that will help. The film I used was Ilford FP4 shot at ISO 50. I metered the highlights and shadows to find a middle exposure. I then used a stacked yellow/polarizing filter and used the Reciprocity Timer to find the correct exposure for the adjustment. When I returned home, I found the developing times for Ilford in Rodinal 1:25 and lowered the time from 9:00 min to 7:45 min. I think the thing that helped me most was that I kind of remember the shadow and highlights in the scenes being within a 5 stop range.

I hope this is a help to you.

These two images are the only ones to survive the cut from the 4x5 images made.

Well, it's official. I am still NOT a landscape photographer. Learning with each effort but still nothing that I find satisfactory.

These two images are the only ones to survive the cut from the 4x5 images made.

This one broke a lot of "rules" including, but not limited to shooting directly into the sun. And I'm cool with that.

Great captures Tim. I am more drawn to your first one. You caught some fantastic details and textures as well as the smoothness of the sky. These elements provide a a wonderful viewing tension that is great to see. I do find the ghosting of the second one cool but I still dig the first one.

Tim and Dave, great images. I like all of the shots posted by everyone. The sky and light were nice that weekend. For me and the 11 x 14 it was a bit windy. Still I managed four images I think. May try to develop them this weekend.

As I don't have room for a wet printing darkroom I do all of my post work *gasp* digitally. When I do print (Epson 3880), I tone the images as desired and print on the Hammermuhle Bamboo as my final prints.

I am like you, I also photograph in multiple formats. I don't mind you posting 35mm here; in fact I encourage it as it reflects out time there. Anyway, nicely composed shot.

Daniel! You have the x-ray film magic down! Great detail and texture. Well seen.

As I still don't feel like the have the eye for general landscape work I tend to look for details and smaller things that catch my attention. On the third day when I wandered just outside of camp I found this bush/brush and it caught my attention.

Great captures Dan. Of the 2, I prefer the second one. I like how it draws my eye to the background rock formations more directly than the first image.

And I think this will be the last one from me... I have a horizontal version of this one as well, but I think the lines in this composition coupled with the mountaintop suggested a strong sense of verticality.. So here it goes:
