Copal 3 shutter on Master Technika

I'm looking at a lens for my Master Technika, it's in a Copal 3 shutter and just by looking at it, it seems that might might be a little too wide and hit the front standards.
Can anybody out there that has a Techinika and a lens in a Copal 3 shutter tell me how everyting fits? Or even a photo would help.

the lens is in Ohio and I'm in NYC so I can't try it myself.

It fits fine.

You need the extension ring that comes standard with Copal 3 shutters. This is not an extension board, just a little 1/2 inch or so thick spacer ring that goes in between the shutter and the front of the board.

I have used several large Copal 3 or Compur 3 lenses on my Master Technika and Technika IV too.

If the shutter doesn't come with the ring you'll need to find a suitable replacement (washers or something similar perhaps). A tophat board might be fine but even then sometimes the aperture adjustment binds on the board w/o the spacer ring.

Ok thanks! Looking at the photos the buyer sent me it has a little spacer between the shutter and lensboard. Looks like it might work.

I'd wonder why you would want a lens in a Copal 3 shutter for a relatively compact 4x5 camera. For any focal length I can imagine you can find a lens with plenty of coverage in a Copal 1 or 0 shutter, which are lighter and more compact.

A strange statement. The Master Technika is at home in a studio as well as in the field. There's plenty of reasons one would want a larger lens - which usually means a larger aperture, so easier focusing and more control of the DOF. Also larger IC usually.

Tonight I put a Tele Xenar 360 in Compound 3 shutter on 6X9 Linhof Color Kardan which has Technika front standard and lens board. Fits fine, no top hat required.

I can focus at infinity and down to about 9 feet for portraits. Very happy with this new lens.

The Compound #3 is a slightly smaller shutter than the Copal #3 which I can't use on my Seneca Improved View unless I made a modified lens board - I can use the Compound #3. The Copal #3 will fit the large lens boards of the Seneca City View.

However Linhof/Wista boards are longer and as has already been said there's not a problem.

Some of us use the same lenses across different formats, So in my case I can use my 240mm f5.6 Nikon W (Copal #3) on 5x4, 7x5 & 10x8, the equivalent Symmars and Sironars are also in Copal #3 shutters, to get a 240mm in a smaller #1 shutter I'd have to go for a slower Tessar type lens like the 240mm f6.3 Commercial Congo and that has less coverage only 7x5.

There's always some kind of trade off to allow for a smaller shutter at the same focal length, the 135mm f4.5 Xenar's were in a #1, the 136mm f4.7 Xenar's were in a #0. The CZJ 210mm f4.5 Tessar is in a Compound #3 while the 210 f6.3 Tessar is in a Compur #1.
