I don't care for the lines, but they COULD be in worse places. They almost frame the subjects.

Thanks; you might be asking the impossible with such thin depth of field as distances decrease, and an energetic child. But it's worth trying.

The weather has made it very difficult to step out for photos so I made this self portrait as a test. The lighting is flat and the focus is off but I do like the shallow DOF of the 8x10 and the negative development came out decent even with the print drum.

Scarlet, photographed with a Wisner Expedition 8x10 camera, Schneider 360mm f6.8 lens, shot at f11 at 1/60th sec, studio flash, Fomapan 200 developed in Rodinal 1:50. My scanner (Epson V550) is the limiting factor, the image has slight banding and is a tiny bit soft (although the shallow depth of field is the main softness you see). I guess I would have to use pro drum scanning to really be able to see this negative, but that is so expensive and inconvenient I seldom get around to doing it. The model was delighted with this shot - film is definitely more flattering on skin than digital (this is unretouched).

This photo is basically a catalogue of mistakes that I seem to have got away with. First I forgot to stop down the lens so the image is 3 stops over exposed, luckily the focus is dead on (something that never works out when you try to shoot a portrait wide open!). Second the was a pinhole in my bellows that leaked light onto the bottom left of the image, which I've managed to minimise in photoshop. I really like this image so now I have to work out how to do the same thing consistently. I'm guessing an uncoated lens might replace the light leak as a more predictable way of lowering contrast.

I had the exact same thing happen to me when using a Petzval and lens cap shutter; over-exposed by a ton, but focus was spot-on.
The resulting image, saved in PS, was quite memorable.
It's certainly worth trying to duplicate the process, minus the light leaks.

And here is the smaller halfplate shot to test exposure, before pouring the big plate. Scovill Peerless petzval, about F4, it was 8 seconds. The large plate I was using an F8 lens, the light had changed a bit, I went 21 seconds. Using an old wooden dryplate holder, I had a darkslide scrap malfunction.

I don't usually shoot portraits (if you can call this a portrait even) but I have borrowed a friends 11x14 as I have lenses and a single holder, and was visiting my friend and decided I wanted to give it a shot, well I had no lighting and so the meter read something like 15-25 seconds (I forget) which I estimated with reciprocity to be 3 minutes long with this X-Ray film, I was pretty spot on.

Anyway 3 minute exposure f/32, AGFA Curix in Rodinal, rotary tank.

This is the second generation Impossible instant film. The first one (called PQ) produced pale sepia prints, quite nice but lacking true blacks. The second generation (called simply B&W) produces deep blacks, almost too much. That's what I used. They are both quite strange fllms, a bit difficult to use, but produce interesting results. I hear Impossible is launching the third generation in a month or so. I'm hoping that will have more normal tonality, more consistency in terms of ISO, and less streaky. We shall see! Whatever it is like, it will be fun to try.

I've always shunned Grafmatics but I finally had the chance to try one and I liked it. So I bought a nice little bundle of 3 on eBay that seemed to be in excellent shape. To my surprise they came loaded with Delta 100 so I shot some today to test the procedure out with film. Here's a quicky shot of a friend warming up for a recital.

Herb is a local member of the Leica User Group. He is 92 years old, so it is fitting that the first portrait is with the Cooke PS945, the modern lens based on an optical formula from the 1920 Pinkham and Smith. You can see tiny Fuji he is currently using, while waiting for his M9 to come back from Leica Service:

It's the photographer's USE of the light (but not just the light) it's communication and connection with the subject... with his/her vision and heart. Some artist's vision reaches our hearts and others don't. Some have it... and others do not. Do you reach into others' hearts?

What makes a beatiful portrait? Is it "really" me me me... reaching me me me? I think not. It's seeing into them them them, and who they really are.

You just need a lot of practising.

sometimes all pieces just fit perfectly and that's waht happened during this shoot.
The boy had beautiful eyes, he was a good sitter., chemicals all worked just fine and I managed to put the lights the way it worked fine.
So sometimes you need a little luck also!

Thanks, all! And I don't really sell prints as my traditional darkroom printing skills aren't up to scratch. (My digital printing skills are top notch though.) Someday maybe.

I'm just learning movements, so forgive the possibly simple question. Did you use some forward tilt on the front standard to get the feet and the face both in focus?

I honestly never consciously register anymore whole thing with movements, b/c i never actually level 8x10 unless i shoot landscapes (4x5 Chamonix got built-in levels, so its right there.. None of my 8x10 got, so its a bit of guess work) but if i remember right -yes , there was slight adjustment of focal place to tilt.

No filters. Good lighting. The film is Fuji HRT Green at ISO 50, in D23, 1:6 for 15 min @75 degrees, minimal agitation, at 0, 5, 10

There's a diffused layer added to soften things a bit.

Scanned this with my new HP G4050, which takes 8x10 directly on the glass. I was a little wary because few people have them, though those who do say they like it, but it turns out to be a great scanner. A new, unused one cost me $108, with shipping, on Amazon, and I bought Vuescan to do the heavy lifting. Now, the next thing I need to do is learn to focus the camera on the eyes instead of the chin. :-) I'm starting to realize that after I focus, subjects very often relax and slump just a bit, moving their face forward just a half inch or so.

You need one of those metal supports that go behind the head to stop the sitter moving so much :-) All joking aside, very nicely done. Thanks for the tip on the scanner too.

Something fun I did with my daughter - her as Isaac Newton in a play by GB Shaw. Taken on the stage with house lights and an added softbox and a kicker.

Kodak 2D 8x10, Goerz 19" red dot apo artar, tmax 400, pyrocat-hd 2:2:100, David Lewis bromoil paper in amidol. This will get bleached and bromoil'd later, but I thought I'd share here first.

That's really nice. I was trying to do something similar yesterday with a Fuji SF, but I don't think it's going to come out. If it's not horrible, I'll post it later. Your photo seems like exactly the kind of thing that lens (Kodak Portrait) was designed for, and works great there.

Technical: 8x10 Ansco Universal with 36cm Heliar, Packard shutter, Fuji Green xray film, developed in 1:6 D23 for about 15 minutes at 75 degrees, with agitation at 1, 5, 10. Scanned with HP G4050 @ 1200ppi.

Lighting: strobe in 2x3 gridded softbox at 90 degrees and high, on left; bare strobe (no reflector at all) just above and to the left of the lens for fill, snooted hair light strobe on boom above and slightly behind.

Philosophical: For the last couple of months I've been immersing myself in Mike Disfarmer. I don't get him as much as I'd like, but I've been trying to do something similar to what he was doing. I've interpreted that as using standard portrait studio techniques without a lot of pretense, and putting people in situations where they can be themselves, completely, without any spin towards any type of glamor or drama. All of my portraits, for some time, have been focused on making pictures that subjects' friends would simply say "That is EXACTLY Xxxx!" and this new (for me) studio thing is a continuation of that. I'm not trying to do anything photographically fancy.

This person is my wife's personal trainer.

The stop was between f/5.6 and 8 somewhere. Depth of field is non-existent!
