I came by an old type of Sinar camera, (C.Koch), which has an shutter, but unlinke mine F1 shutter, it only seems to have a M and a B setting. Does anyone know what kind of shutter(?) this is?

The camera looks to be a Sinar Norma. I know they had shutters available back then but I don't know anything about them. I parted out an F one time that had a later shutter like you have.

Have you tried actuating the shutter on the different settings to see what you get?

There are at least 2 types of (early?) Sinar/Copal shutters:

- the MB model shown in the OP.

- A model I have which I can describe as:

"Made in Switzerland" instead of the usual "Switzerland . . . . Made in Japan"
Not marked the usual "Copal".
No provision (plastic casting/minus clips) for internal filters.
Speeds and their placing on the scale is very different.

Usual type is B 1/60, 1/30, 1/15, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8.
This one is B 1/50, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 1/32.
The position of the 1/32 is past 8 secs!

Thank you Steven,
Do you mean by 'this one' yours or the MB model? Or don't this model have any preset shutterspeeds but only a M and B setting?
(I can't have a look at this shutter, because i don't own it (yet)

Hi Steven,
If I switch the lever to M setting on the MB model what is the shutter speed.
Thank you for your reply in advance.

A guess

M is Time

B is Bulb

A jewelers screwdriver appropriate size will trip the shutter. I guess time and bulb also. For lots of applications that is all you need

Hi Tin Can,
Yes, I understand. M stands for Moment(Time) and B=Bulb.
But what would be the M setting then? 1/30? 1/60?

I can hear and see that difference

Compare with a known normal shutter

My Norma shutter is Copal Made in Japan

Is the "M" setting part of the shutter speed scale, or are you perhaps looking at the X/M flash synchronization switch?

OK, my shutter has only two settings M and B on the shutter speed scale. There's no X/M. I think this is SINAR made, pre Copal.213815

"M" syncs with a foil flash bulb. It is used with all marked shutter speeds when lengthy, time, exposures are not needed.
"B" the shutter opens as long as the cable release is held down. Closes upon release.

On another Norma shutter thread here, it is stated that the M speed is 1/32. So "B" (time) open/close and 1/32 "M". If not CLA'ed recently the escapements get gummied and way slow. Do you have a firing cable? If not the modern black ones do not stretch with use, I have four old silver Norma ones that are now a bit too long to work well, they hang up on the return. So I use them with Plaubel Makiflexes, so a good use for excellent mostly working cables. I cleaned all my cables with bicycle cable lube and yes now more smoothly after cleaning

Thank you Daniel. The shutter works perfectly fine, blades open and close properly. I just couldn't figure out what is the M setting. So it is then 1/32.
