I have this lens on an Eastman 2-D 8x10. I was just wondering the best use for this lens I'm kind of a dummy when it comes to this technical stuff. I've taken a few portraits with it an seem to work well with that. Anyway thanks again for your input. p.s i did check the Schneider vintage lens check but like i said sort of a dummy on the tech. Thanks again.:)

A Xenar is a Tessar-type lens and very popular for portraits.

Since Tessars aren't wide angles, that length is probably kind of short for 8x10--that would be a nice normal lens for 5x7, or good portrait length for 4x5. For 8x10 it might be a little fuzzy on the corners in normal stuff, while getting you too close for some portraits. But if you like it, it's good!

Any suggestions on a wide angle lens for 8x10? I should add that the camera has packard-idea shutters, does this make a difference in lens selection? or will some lens' come with a shutter?

This should point you at the right direction, tho it's bit dated.

Most of the readily available wide angle (how wide do you want?) lenses for 8x10 are in shutter. About the only readily available wide angle lenses for 8x10 in barrel are ancient lenses such as Ser. V. Protars.

The Xenar 210mm f:4.5 definitely won't cover 8x10. It's my most used lens on 5x7 (although I have a slightly newer sample than yours') but I have to be careful to not use excessive movemets. Otherwise, it is a very nice lens... Not for 8x10... (I might try it on whole plate, but have not mounted it on correct lensboard for my Seneca View WP)

The 9½" Xenar is a 240mm. the 8¼" is 210. Schneider listed coverage as 8x5 " for both.

Lens coverage is stated for infinity distance. A 240mm lens of Tessar design will cover 8x10 when shot at an adequately closer distance.

I have 2 240 Xenars, one is a late production coated one and the other is old and not coated, and I use them both on 8x10 and stopped down they both are fine in the corners at normal landscape shooting distance. True, there is not much room for movement unless you use back movements. The late Xenar is a very sharp lens and, in thinking about it, is actually the lens I use most often on 8x10.
