So I do quite a bit of art shows with my fiber prints. Been going for the big ones lately. I submitted to the Chicago Old Town Art Show this year. (one of the top shows in the country and hard to get in,they have very high standards for photography) and a lot of photography applicants with few spots to fill. 1/2 of a point,,i missed it by 1/2 a damn point!! in doing the math that equals out to be a A- as apposed to a A+. Frustrated and proud at the same time..1/2 of a point ,are you kidding me! I think im doing something right tho, will work harder, and maybe next year. emotional day for me., thanks for listening..
(Today my Beseler 45MX earned his name,,it is 1/2 point)

Well, regardless of the rejection, here is to you! Maybe Randy Moe will chime in. I'm a Chicago Ex-Pat. Lincoln-Fullerton. Hang in there, you could make it next time with the same portfolio, judges being variable as they are.

Congratulations.
My former boss (I was his assistant for two years) happily toiled in obscurity for 15 years, consistently producing excellent commercial and personal work.
About 7 years ago, one of his projects brought him a lot of recognition, and suddenly he was winning awards and getting hired for stuff he never would have had a chance of doing before.
He told me one day: "I've been doing the same thing for 20 years, and the guys now giving me an award were the same guys who were ignoring me all this time."

Sorry for the late response Shannon, but Congratulations.

I used to enter the odd photo contest, and won a couple but more often than not my work was skipped over by the judges altogether.

What I discovered is that some people studied the judges, and based their photographs entirely on what they knew the judges liked.
I tried the same thing, and that's when I would win.
However it wasn't my cup of tea, so I went back to producing photos the way I wanted. I don't care if it ever wins any contest, what I do care about is having fun producing my artwork and pleasing those who wish to display it in their homes and offices.

Thanks for your reply.I agree i dont change my photos for anyone and stay true to my style.not just for shows but for anyone.lots have said to me,:hey you should shoot this or you should shoot that" i get a little offended some times when folks say that.Unless its for a commercial client of course but even on assignment i still sneak in my style that's why they hire me after all.
