I recently purchased a used Toyo-View 45AX field camera and have only just realized that the tripod socket is partially stripped. It looks as if there is a way to remove the the round piece that the socket is located in - can this piece be replaced? Any suggestions...

Hi Joseph,

The tripod mounting bolt consists of a threaded bushing that screws into a larger round metal base piece. The bushing is removable and replaceable. The Toyo A cameras have the option of using a 1/4, or 3/8 inch bushing. When purchased new, they come with both size bushings included. Check with the M.A.C. repair service dept. for the replacement part. You probably will be able to remove the stripped bushing and replace it with a new one in your choice of sizes, yourself.

Yes, the center portion is, indeed, replaceable - either with a 1/4-20 threaded insert or one for 3/8". You should be able to get one from (or through) any Toyo dealer.

Or, you can visit a reputable local machine shop (like mine) and have them install a stainless helicoil thread insert. Cheap and fast and available everywhere
