I literally had about 3 mins to shoot this as she was checking out of a resort and before she got in a cab for the airport. So, the plan went bye-bye and I grabbed what I could in the time available. One light and a prayer...

Wow! That is an amazing image from a compact camera. No blown highlights in the windows, nice tonal gradation, I seriously thought this was medium format film when I first saw it..

I'd say you're very welcome to post your film-based small format shots. And I for one do like that there are two or three places where digital pictures can be posted on here. It gives me some insight into how the LF photographers here work on smaller formats. Besides, if anything non-LF can be posted here, then that could be a point of debate as well as there are thousands of places online where these things could be posted and yet, the smaller format threads are quite popular. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying I enjoy them.

I always shoot digital first. Below is the digital which makes the subject look 10 years younger. He likes this one for promotional purposes.

I used a polarizer on this and I think I lost a lot of great highlights because of it. I would not use a polarizer next time, just to see if I got a nicer sheen on her coat.

Great portrait Frank. I'm always astonished just how good the Rolleiflex is. I have a '58 Rolleiflex T that is my go-to non LF camera. It goes everywhere & does everything pretty darn well. Beautiful image in every respect.

Here's something a bit different. Paper negative selfies. Pre-flashed grade 2 RC paper cut to ~65mm x 35mm size, taped to pressure plate of old Minolta X700, set to aperture priority mode, ISO 25 with +2 stops exposure compensation dialed in, for effective ISO of 6. Lens set to f/4, camera determines the shutter speed, which was around 2 seconds. Developed in dilute paper developer, taped to inside wall of 2-reel stainless tank, rotary processed on its side using about 85ml of chemistry.

I appreciate the supportive comments. Thanks! Janice helped me move some stuff into the studio, and she was kind enough to let me take some shots sans makeup. It's a small room, but it's such a relief to have a dedicated space. It's in an art gallery (http://www.sharefineart.com/). They have a number of small rooms upstairs that artists can rent. Mine is about 17 feet long and 12 foot wide on the big end, with a 10 foot ceiling. The camera end narrows to 7.5 feet. The walls are light gray. I painted the background wall with a couple of shades of gray using the Woolie, a faux finishing tool.

While I used digital today, the plan is to move to my recently acquired Fuji GX680; and the long term goal is to get my Century No. 9 8x10 studio camera up-and-running. I've seen some very good work here with xray film, and using that would make 8x10 portraiture affordable for me.

Yes, more leg and shoes. My eyes kept flashing off her to those balls. Maybe just the Eight ball closer to pocket? It's like a unanswered question in that position. As she is, with averted eyes, but a lot of skin showing.

I recently started scanning some of my fathers images shot on a Russian copy of a Leica LTM. These were shot during WWII in the Netherlands, England, France and Belgium. Some of the negs were pretty scratched but the images were interesting IMO.

This collection of photos by your father are excellent. As a former government military historian, I recommend doing a Google search of Army history organizations. They might be very interested in a establishing and archiving a permanent collection of prints in your father's name. Of course, they would prefer the originals. Either way, his photos would be available for use by researchers--and also available for viewing by his and your descendents.

This is an interesting gal; she speaks like 5+ languages and is SUPER smart. I only had the good fortune to work with her for a short time but learned she is pretty awesome. And it was always great fun watching and occasionally mocking the gents playing for her.

I worked an arrangement with a museum that is taking possession of about 100,000 of my negatives documenting obscure practices of Appalachian culture over the past sixty years. They've established a special collection for educational study.

Thanks Peter; No soft focus on my visit to England; I traveled light. Everything I needed for 4 days in my backpack that fit the size/weight requirements for carryon luggage. It was a snow squal when I left Maine, and we had 8 inches of fresh snow upon my return. It has since mostly melted. I'll have to find other things besides snow to photograph soon.

The computer is in the park in it's original building, but is managed/staffed separately for some reason. Apparently there's some drama around that and all the money coming in for improvements, but the people there were as sweet and pleasant and down to earth as could be, and I think I managed to capture some of that humbleness and down to earthness in my photo.

I agree, and I would be fascinated with the computer. Old computer stuff is quite interesting - I was taught how to do basic programming with punch cards in a gifted class in elementary school (of course I remember nothing of it now). My grandfather was an electrical engineer for the air force and then freelance so I would see old tube electronics all the time in his shop and would play with old parts and such.

Corran & JP, great photos. I agree on the Tessar. They're a sleeper. I bought into the Rollei 2.8F for a long time & then sold it for a super angulon xl. Eventually I missed the Rollei & bought an old Rolleiflex T & had it tuned up by Harry. I've become totally enamored of the tessar. It really is a lens of character. The Super Ikonta, as you demonstrate C, is also in a class by itself. Beautiful images, both!

This was shot with the Minolta Dynax 7 (which always accompanies my digital Sony cameras when on assignment), and the Minolta 85mm/f1.4, on Kodak Duplicating Slide film that must have been 20 years old.

I must say I am having trouble getting sharp 35mm scans from my Epson V700 and I may have oversharpened this one in Photoshop, although Flickr tends to apply some sharpening too. No post-processing apart from sharpening and a very slight color correction.

The lens is a Fuji GX680 190SF, with the first picture at f/22 and the second at f/11. The main light in the first one was a 11.5" Speedotron reflector with grid, and in the second case it was a 48" Octobox.

I'm not sure why, but the images look softer on screen in Firefox than they do in PS. It's odd, because I'm hosting them on my Dropbox account, and so there shouldn't be additional compression or resizing.

I've been taking expensive DSLRs in shoulder deep or neck deep water a lot this week, and it's turned out successful. I haven't soaked a camera and have gotten a few nice photos. Thank you for the kind comments. (Lauren likes them as well.) I'm definitely at the "beginning" stage of portrait photography. Lauren, who just turned 17, wanted me to do her Senior Portraits. These two are from the studio.

In both cases the camera was a D600 with a 135mm AIS manual focus Nikkor lens @ f/8.5. The main light was a 48" Fotodiox Octobox on a boom with a Speedotron 102 head. That's all that was used for the second picture. For the first picture, the one where she was leaning against the wall, we also used a round reflector bellow and in front of her, along with two Photogenic monolights with grids, one at each side. Both were pointed at her hair and the wall.

I used Lightroom for raw processing. I made a custom color profile for the reclining photo, but I preferred "camera neutral" for the other photos. The retouching was pretty straight forward, with some cloning, healing and work on frequency separated layers.

I wanted to shoot some film, but we ran out of time, as we did some outside shots as well.

Bbbbut Ken Rockwell says Nikon's colors are off and you need a Fujifilm camera to get proper skin tones! (Nothing against Fuji. I own both an X100s and a D300)

Chrism, you seem to have a real good connection/communication going with all these hospital people! Bunch of people putting up nice portraits in this thread and the LF portraits this month!

After lights out last night, I heard some noise in the girls room. I peaked in and my older daughter was reading to the younger one. I went and grabbed the nearest camera which was my wife's D50 with 50/1.8d. A quick guestimate in exposure compensation and lightbulb-white balance setting and I got what I wanted for a candid. I snuck into the room and took a couple photos, which the girls completely ignore because they are used to being photographed and they were quite involved in the book. The blue color is from blue/green walls and some cooler white-balanced LED christmas lights that are sometimes used for low illimunation.
