Not a formal portrait, but fun none the less. This is a from I roll I just developed (trying to get caught up on a backlog) that was taken during a family get together last year. My nephew was asking about the "funny camera" while he was eating his lunch. I asked him to strike a pose and this is what he wanted...lol

Thanks jerrybro and Ironage :) Here's another from the same batch of development, including same camera and film. This time its my sister. I try to shoot more candid, but I swear she has this instant reflex to strike a pose the second a lens is pointed in her direction...lol

I have no idea and that's not my hat.

This was the tail end of the hipster fedora era in Chicago.

I have been wearing fedoras for at least 40 years.

And wore one today, good for cold rain. Made in USA Stetson (https://www.stetson.com/store/hats/outdoor/explorer-outdoor-hat-2.html?color=loden-mix), a cheap one.

I should send it to Alcala's for cleaning and reshaping.

Chicago has hats. I can't afford Optimo Hats (https://www.optimo.com/) or Alcala's (https://www.alcalas.com/c/hats.html)

I see Hat's Plus (https://www.hats-plus.com/) has closed the huge store and now is online only.

It's cheap as I have worn it for 10 years. So $10 a year.

This Chicago made hat (https://optimo.com/collection/the-zephyr-in-bedrock) is cheap for this brand, They sell hats that cost 1000's.

I only looked in the window as I will never buy a $1000 hat.

You do have a point. Not bad for $10 a year. Less, the longer you use it!

Peter, I think FF doesn't play nice with my website sometimes. I agree though. The 85mm f/1.4 AF-D is just a fantastic lens and probably my favorite for general portraiture. The lighting helps too (sunset, with my wife holding a reflector).

Randy, I looked and it was shot at f/2.5. I think I had it full-on soft in the Rear position. I could just be mis-remembering. This was a run-and-gun kinda shoot after a long day shooting other things so I was pretty tired. It does seem a little less soft than expected so maybe I didn't turn it all the way like I intended.

Tin Can
7-May-2019, 08:56
btw

I misread your 85mm f/1.4 AF-D and I don't have that lens. I thought you posted 50mm f1.4 AF-D.

The 85 mm is on a list in the bottom of my overflowing bucket...:)

Corran
7-May-2019, 09:07
I couldn't live without my 85. I shot her entire wedding with that lens and nothing else actually. Her husband is one of my good friends - we were roommates while we both worked on our Master's in Music Performance - so I still occasionally do portrait sessions for them despite not doing a whole lot of that anymore.

Here we go - 35mm film, versus APS digital. Same subject, same flash(!), just 15 years in between. Oh, the film is the more recent one!

Film vs Digital (https://flic.kr/p/2gssk21) by chrism229 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/chrism229/), on Flickr
In the red corner we have an F6, 1.4/85mm, Ilford XP2 Super, Kodak HC-110, Hasselblad X1 scan, and in the blue corner a Nikon D70, and some forgotten kit lens. Both photos used the same Nikon Speedlight, though the D70 on the right side used its tiny supra-prism light as a trigger, thus providing some fill light, whilst the F6 had no such capability and the flash was hard wired and the only light available. I can't say I have learnt much this last twenty years, but there we have it. Subjects grow, but their photographers maybe do not.

The first photo is Arthur Bullington with his trained mule. Arthur is a muleskinner, farms with mules, in Cocke co Tn. Arthur trained this mule to laugh on command. Photo from 2008 with a 501cm Hasselblad & 120 Macro in Fuji 100.

The second was from around 1978 in Muddy Pond Tn. They’re Mennonite children. Shot with my Leica M4P most likely and 90 Elmarit (not tele) on original TX in HC110B. Boy do I miss the old TX and hate that stuff the call TX now.

Third is James Bunch in Monroe Co TN. James carved that motorcycle out of a piece of wood with his Case pocket knife. Shot around 1989 with my M6 and 21 Elmarit. Probably Delta 400 or HP5 in HC110B.

Last is my good friend Jimmy Morrow from Del Rio, Cocke Co. TN. Jimmy is a serpent handling preacher and one of the finest people on the planet. Shot with my Leica MP and 75 Summilux on HP5 pushed in Accufine to 800. The world would be a much better place if there were more Jimmy’s.

Don Dudenbostel
2-Aug-2019, 14:41
I’d have to go back and look in my records for the name of the mandolin player. I shot it around 2008 in Cocke Co TN in what’s called the old 15th. Shot with my 501cm and 60 CF on fuji 100 in HC110B.

The second is my buddy Jimmy Morrow the serpent handling preacher posing with the biggest copperhead I’ve ever seen. Let me say that when you see someone handling a copperhead, rattler, cobra or puff adder it’s pretty weird but it’s overload when you see someone get bitten and die later. Shot with Fuji GSW 690III on Meopan 400 in HC110B.

Next is David Decker a street preacher. David is another kind soul who loves every human on the earth and cares about them. David lives in a little trailer with his disabled wife and has dedicated his life to helping others. Shot with my 501cm and 80planar on Fuji 100 in HC110B.

Last is Billy the Kid as he’s known. Billy worked for another moonshiner running the stills. The evening I made this photo the other helper set fire to the still house out of anger for his bod who was dating the still hands cousin. Big Dave as he was known destroyed three 1000 gallon stills, 1800 gallons of illegal whiskey and put himself out of a job. The fire drew some serious attention and the owner was arrested that evening. The owner called me at midnight to bail him out of jail and loan him $10000 for a new still. Sorry, no can do!

A couple of months later Billy was arrested again making whiskey and served prison time.

Pretty sure I shot this with my SWC/M on Delta 400 rated at 100 and pulled 2 stops in HC110B. There was crazy high contrast but over exposing 2 stops and pulling 2 worked perfect.

Ha, I should have know you'd have a few of Popcorn Sutton.:) Again, wonderful work--the one of the two girls clambering around on the sawhorse deserves the full James Agee treatment.

FWIW, get her under a brush-arbor and my grandmother could go full-Pentecostal and speak in tongues, but I never heard of a congregation that made a habit of taking up serpents in my part of the world. (A colleague from our department when we were at UA-Birmingham, Dennis Covington, did a "New Journalism" take on the snake handlers on Sand Mountain, Alabama though, that was a finalist for the National Book Award.)

Notice the spelling,”Chiper.” James passes away several years ago. I think he was in his 90’s but could be wrong. Pretty much all his carvings were done with a Case pocket knife. I need to pull up the files and post some closeups of his hands and knife while he was carving. James only sold a handful of his pieces until near the end of his life. His wife was sick and confined to her bed for over 20 years and didn’t want James to sell any of his work. Much of it resides in a spare room in their tiny house until he sold most of it to John Rice Erwin at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris TN.

I thought it might be fun to post some of my earliest portraits when I was in the 3rd grade in 1955. My school, Elm Grove, was in Oak Ridge TN and since has been torn down. I received a new Kodak Brownie Starflash for my 7th birthday and used to take it to school and photograph my friends and teachers. These are scans from my old Brownie images shot on Kodak Verichrome (not pan). Looking at the images I can say the camera didn't have the best lens ever made.

Oak Ridge was a young town at that time. It was built during the war effort in 1942 and was known as the secret city. Oak Ridge was the location where the U-235 was produced for the two atomic bombs used durning the war.

I guess I see the world a little different. I'm not one that shoots sweet portraits, not that there's anything wrong with sweet images. I like photographing things with a little more grit.

I met this guy about three years ago in "Happy Holler", once skid row, just after he got out of jail. He was drinking from a fifth of something orange I don't think I'd put in my cars radiator to keep it from freezing. I'm not one who's afraid to strike up a conversation and started talking to him and photographing him. He had gotten out of jail that morning and told me about getting knifed and his scar. Here's one of the images.

I started my career as a photojournalist 53 years ago and can't seem to shake the interest in this kind of work.

I think I shot this on a $15 Nikon EF and a wonderful Nikkor 50mm f2. Could have been a 35 2.8 Nikkor though. Can't remember the film.

Fair enough Don, I understand

However my image of Kristi has 42 years of history in it. She is my un-adopted step daughter I first met when she was 6, her father died when she was 3. Her mother, my wife would not let me adopt Kristi, now 48.

This beauty shot was a quick snap in my studio as we said goodby last Sunday. I see Kristi seldom now. I popped my hat on her last second, she later told me it was the only pic of her with glasses. Took 2 snaps, this one is closer, big softbox prepositioned, no time, her 400 mile ride was waiting with motor running.

Over the years we both have a lot of shared history, her mother, my first wife, has passed. Mother had a difficult life, born in occupied Germany as Displaced Person. aka D.P.

Sometimes the back story and scars are hidden...

Here are a couple of faces I photographed about fifteen or so years ago. They're digital capture with a Canon 1Ds and 85mm f1.2. There are a lot of beautiful faces and wonderful people in the mountains around here. The first man, Lendall Abbott, was born in a log cabin in Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains before it became a national park. He carves tiny animals out of peach seeds and plays traditional mountain music on his guitar. The second man is Mr Zornes who's also an old mountain musician.

Photo's 3&4 were made about twenty five years ago. James Bunch was a folk artist, wood carver. In the first image he was showing me a photo of himself and family when he was a child and the family killed and prepared hogs for food for his family. The second was from another visit. I and another friend were having a nice conversation in his front yard. Number 3 was a digital capture and 4 was on 35mm TX (original version).

Since I'm digging through the archive I'll share a few more images.

Photo 1, I never knew the persons name but he had an "Elegant Junk" shop in Oral Tennessee just a stones throw from where I live. Shot with a Leica M6 and 35 Summicron v4. Don't remember the film. Shot around 2000.

Photo 2 is Abe Nickels who dug graves by hand. He lived in a shack and slept on the floor in his work clothes. He said there were holes in the walls and on a windy night the wind would blow through the holes. Shot with Zeiss Ikon M and Voightlander 28mm f1.9. Don't remember the film. Shot around 2007.

Photo 3 is Terry Reece an Appalachian tobacco farmer, or was. Not much tobacco grown around here now. Shot with my Hasselblad 501C and 120 f4 macro Planar on Delta 400. Shot around 2007.

Photo 4 is Raven with her eggs. She lives with her aunt who raises chickens for the eggs to support the family. Ravins mother disappeared and no one knows her whereabouts. They live in a sick with no air-conditioning and her aunt cooks on a wood burning stove. Shot on a Leica M with 28mm Voightlander 28 f1.9. I think it's on Delta 100. Shot around 2007.

Don, while stylistically different, these images remind me of Shelby Lee Adams, who documented the Appalachia he grew up in. Is there a background story to how, as a one-time photojournalist, you seemed to choose this area?

Ive been a resident of East Tennessee since 1951 and really love the people and culture. Over the years I’ve made a lot of friends that connect me with these people. Without the contacts it would be almost impossible and being a native (almost) helps too.

I don't seem to be able to stop making inappropriate combinations of film and developer, and worrying at them until they work. This is XP2 Super (what else!) at ISO 200 in Diafine, and developed with continuous agitation for 5+5 minutes in the motorised Rondinax.:

I'm afraid I cut off the top of my head, but there was only me at home and I needed to try it out. Anyway, I'm delighted with the minimal grain and thus the film was not wasted.

Works nicely Chris. It's good to know how conventional processes work with this film. The mid tones and highs are very nice. I believe colour C41 film can be processed in conventional chems. I've never tried it but I have some Ultramax which someone gave me and as I seldom shoot colour I might experiment with it. Thanks for the inspiration.
