I bought a V_Heliar 480 f4.5 in old style but with no a lens hood.
If somebody has the same lens, I would glad to get detail sizes of the hood for making this one.

Some came with lens hoods but I prefer a compendium shade.

All my barrel lenses have... if I'm correct in terminology.
Some is deep, some not.

I prefer a compendium shade (maybe "shade" more right name?) too but for modern lenses.

A compendium is even better for the old ones, a round shaped is always a strong compromise, because it would cropping the corners if they would be as long as the compendium!

Right, but a brass lens without her hood looks like a car without wheels :-)

Totally agree with Ritchie!
Just I want to restore the original (or close to original) condition of the lens.

Some Heliars have removable shades, others are integral to the front mount. If it's damaged, you can bet it's built-in. :(
I wish I had a 480 to measure for you.....my 11.75" and 14" have hoods, my 42cm and 60cm do not...and no 480.

Can we see a small picture of this lens. Most of the early 48cm Heliars (I've had 2) had the lens shade built into and integral with the front glass group. It didn't come off seperately. They are fragile and one trip to the floor will break them. Then it's common to simply trim what's left off and you end up with something like this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Voigtlander-16-5in-4-5-Heliar-No-7-Barrel-Lens-66993-W-Air-Shutter-/370952559852?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item565e7edcec).

Tracy, V_Heliar 600 is a real gem! I saw it only once.
Was it in a modern style only or in an old too?

I hope my lens must be the same (with shade).

No shade, seems to be from 1922-23. Another member asked for the serial #, which I will share when I have a chance.

Nice lens board for the Heliar!

Having seen the lens (post #11), I note that the thread is there - so all you need to do is to find an aluminium (or brass, painted black) section that is slightly larger. Then solder 3 flat pieces of softish solder inside on edge at 120 degree intervals. Than reduce the thickness of the solder, especialy at the edge with a curved file (careful - high lead content!). Then screw it carefully in over the the short existing male edge thread. The male thread will cut a quite clean female thread in the 3 sections.

This is easily strong enough to hold the lens hood on and can be removed. I have also used the system for flanges.

Hello Zappa, looks like mine.
Is the shade detached from front lens block?

Bonjour Formatoff,

Yes - you can unscrew the lens hood to the left.

Do you like a picture from the stand alone ring?

Salut,

Yes, a Heliar is so amazing.
Would you like to inform to me about a deep and outside size of the shade?
Thanks!

Bonjour Formatoff,

What are you working with the Heliar? What kind of camera do you use?

Salut,

Good Day,

My cameras are 11x14" and 8x20".
Now I want to make the shade and to install the lens to my custom shutter.

Best.
