Cool shot!! What exactly is going on?
To add to the thread, here's an image of 3 of my friends, all photography students here at the university. Shot with a new Fujica G690 camera I'm trying out, 100mm f/3.5 Fujinon (Tessar), on Fuji 160C film, cropped to 8x10 ratio, bounce flash:

Took this in May 2013 at Valley of the Gods, UT. I was all set up to photograph something else at nautical twilight when one of those pink clouds lit up Rooster Butte and Setting Hen Butte. I quickly switched lenses and was able to get this shot. Pentax 6x7, 55-100mm zoom, Velvia 50. Since I don't have a gargantuan GND to cover the 55-100, I lowered the sky a bit in Photoshop to match my vision.

The colors look very natural. So is this a direct scan from the negative? If so, could you summarize your scanning workflow? Thanks!

Glad to share how I scan. I turned down my resolution for the sake of the screenshots; I usually work at 2.5k res but that doesn't matter with regard to color/tones. I basically scan to get all the range captured, and adjust contrast and fine tuning post-scan.
See the settings on the left... for 4x5/8x10 I do lower res.
125226
125225
Basically, set the tone curve to flat for the RGB channel and it will stay flat for each color. Then set the sliders on the input-output gradient to the extremes for the RGB channel and it will stay like that for each color. Then in each color (as shown with Blue), I set the range on the graph to include the range that was prescanned with a little room on each edge. If the L/R sliders are in the colored area, you are clipping highlights or shadows. Do that later if you want in PS. Go through each color and then the RGB. You'll end up with a pretty close scan in terms of color balance with contrast a little low. I save it as a TIFF and open it in PS.
Then in PS I can pay more attention to curves and contrast and finer color balance if I have successfully captured it from the scan.
Now the 21st century thing to do would be to do each of these adjustments to a layer, but I started with Aldus Photostyler for editing scans if that dates me. (Aldus was swallowed by Adobe in 1994) I adjust each color as the scan is rarely accurate with regard to light and dark for each color. I scan B&W film in as color too, since the pyrocat stain is a color unto itself and throws the blue channel off to one side a bit. The right side of the histogram is white, left is black. I like some black or close to black in many photos. I don't often have pure white though; nothing is super bright white in the photo and avoiding clipping the white produces some natural realistic look, particularly as most people's monitors are too bright. If you were printing, you can't print pure white anyways on the inkjet, so keeping it off white is practical. Why does setting the light and dark for each color produce decent color balance? Because white is a even mix of colors and black is an even mix of colors (in pigment, but not in transmittive). That leaves room for error in the middle, but that's super easy to correct with a minor curve adjustment in whatever color is off or using the color balance sliders which I won't demonstrate.
125227
125228
Now, I did blue last and the sky was lacking in cyan a little bit and the ground was lacking in red, so I pulled the red curve down in the sky tones and up in the lower tones. Color balance tool can do this too.
125231
Overall it was lacking a little contrast, so I added some with the RGB curve. This is a good time to make any final adjustment to the white/black points with the sliders here.
125232
This is pretty quick work: I probably spend a minute adjusting things in the scan, and 2 minutes in PS. I'm not a high volume shooter. If I were I'd say this was slow and I'd have to give up a little color control to more automated scanning methods.
Oh yeh, do any crops before you start editing curves in PS. Rotate at any time you feel like it. After saving my work, I do a resize and save for web for posting online.

JP, I was wondering, in Epson Scan, when you focus the active area in the histograms (for each color), does it to a histogram stretch and divide that selected area into 256 values? Or does simply keep those existing values and relegate the exterior values to 0 and 255?

I don't think 0-255 is real; I scan at a higher bit depth and the epson allows me to, so it's more than 8 bits per color. Not sure exactly. I'd suspect it fits the histogram area into whatever value range is used.

My scanning and PS process is the same as jp's. I scanned and Photoshop'd two 4x5 transparencies yesterday in this very manner on my V700. I can get the original look of the transparency with manual adjustments in the software. With Epson Scan the automatic settings clip tones and colors, and never give me the original colors and never the proper contrast range of the film. It's worth learning how to adjust the manual settings. Photoshop works goes easier too.
Some autumn color shots made in a local park on negative film (Ektar and Agfa Optima 100). Developed at home in what now seems to be slightly degrading chemistry (after many rolls and sheets). Mamiya 645 handheld, 80/2.8 wide open, mostly 1/60s, so not the sharpest pics one could imagine. But still satisfying to have made these quickies. Scanned with a 4990 and the software it came with. Color and contrast to taste with curves and hue/saturation. Yes, I do like candy bar colors, sue me...

One of my first twin lens shots, two flashes on a bracket one bounced off the ceiling, I really need to re-scan a bunch of old stuff now that I have a decent scanner. My kids, taken a little over 30 years ago with a Yashica "A".
Then, from about 20 years ago with an Agfa Isolette.
Then, about 13 years ago, Mamiya 645 w. Tiffen Warm/Soft FX II.
Then three years ago, the boy greeting his bride after his last tour (not color, but it's the last medium format I've got of any of the kids). Taken with a Zeiss Ikon and a shaky hand.
On the main thoroughfare around Jackson Square, you'll find the a brass band playing nearly every day the same ol' New Orleans theme songs and demanding "tips for pics," with many a tourist posing with an errant trombone or trumpet pressed into their hands by the band leader. However, if you travel deeper into the French Quarter, 'round back of the Cathedral, you'll find the real New Orleans jazzers, usually playing in the street and drawing a huge crowd. Last year I saw a an amazing Creole Clarinetist, with a killer voice too. This time around was a full jazz quintet with some awesome tunes. Boy do I love me some jazz.

I was in Charleston, SC to do my Transformations:Cosplay project. With one afternoon free, I visited Charleston and then met up with my friend in town. While walking, I mentioned that like many cities, e.g. Boston's Faneuil Hall, or San Francisco's Piers, that they have kept some of the older buildings and repurposed them for small merchants and such.
For whatever reason, a particular row of buildings looked very odd to me, with the big openings where windows should be. I almost imagined that it would be full of horses or livestock. Something gnawed at me. I pointed out the buildings to my friend, and she said "Why do you think this is called Market Street?"
That sent a chill down my spine. I had to go in and took a quick shot. I couldn't stomach being there. Perhaps during the daytime it's full of vibrant merchants, but at that time, it reeked of memories. Of pain. Suffering.

I have been corrected that this was part of Market Hall, a place that had always been used as a open air market. Nevertheless, my feeling of unease was genuine. Thinking back, I saw the Main Entrance earlier in the day and saw the "Daughter of Confederacy" and felt no less un-ease. I know it's all part of our history and heritage.
I know this strides far off into politic and history and I shall not continue to post. Nevertheless, the rush of un-easiness that I felt was genuine, for whatever it's worth.

A trick for male photographers to have their spouse indulge on allowing them to buy expensive gears (Spouse:"don't you have one of those already?" Photographer-who-spent-too-much-money:".. but think of the Bokeh!" Spouse:*roll eyes*) is to take great pictures of said spouse.
This might involve buying more gears, set up the perfect lights, paint the living room white as a studio. Subscribe to Photoshop CC and take a few classes at local colleges.
In my case, I said: "I have a few frames left in the roll, please do something over there." Focus and push the button. It's that easy.

I only wish that my late wife had been that willing to be photographed. :( I had no problem with her agreeing with me for more kit, but getting her in front of a camera was a different story. She was beautiful, but just didn't like having her picture taken. We were married for thirty-five years. In those thirty-five years I have very few pictures of her, except for that five year period when our son was an infant and toddler. You have a great model. :)

I mainly shoot B&W too but use a DSLR or roll of Portra once in a while.
I think that's a good start. The last two are good balances of color and use color to be interesting. The first two I don't think need color and perhaps shows your B&W background. The first could easily be a squared B&W shot; It'd look nice in B&W with the gentle lighting on her face and the bright sparks. I guess crawfish are acquired taste. Is the photo about the color or the texture/shapes/mood? I think it's the latter and you say you were excited but it does not show? It shows the B&W background you've been practicing; color might not be necessary. Dark texture/shape/mood can be done in color for sure though and it's a good challenge but easier for me in B&W.

I guess I never thought about why I was shooting color. with the cherry blossoms it's obvious, so much color. You're right about the other two. The crawfish are part of a larger series of documentary photos, so maybe it's better in context, though it could have easily been b/w

I pulled out this old Fuji 6X9 color negative I had never seen printed (I think I processed the film myself around 1990) to see what a Walmart print would look like. I scanned it at 3000 dpi on my $200 Navy surplus UMAx Powerlook 3000. It made a 96 MB 8 bit jpeg which I cleaned up a little in the GIMP, just spotting. I was surprised when I took it to Walmart that their Fuji Frontier accepted the 96 MB file and made me a nice 12X18 in a hour for about $10. Detail was excellent, and I think this was a hand-held exposure.140310

All from the same roll. Purchased some 2004 expired Provia 100 in bulk and this was a test roll. The film has a very very slight red cast but it almost works better for these fall colors.

Made with a Pentax 645n. I did trim (in PP) some of the film rebate between frames, to make the spacing more uniform. I didn't pan the camera quite enough to avoid overlapping frames, but I left that as is.

I think a little bit of overlap is not a problem, this set looks really good to me.

Jeff, the pano looks great! A mix of repetition + continuity that panoramas need. The spring photo has a bit of Eliot Porter chaos and intimate landscape to it, but a very nice composition with where the branches go in the frame and the straight trunk differs from the wild trunk tree. There is much to see in this photo nobody has commented on.
I shot these at Owls Head Transportation Museum thinking I had black and white film and used an orange filter. When I took the color film out of the camera, I may have cursed quietly discovering my mistake. The color cast is uncorrectable. But I like the results. The bicycle photo is uncorrected. I need a little trinket to hold the film box end to identify what's in the camera.
It turned out good enough to scan and put online though.

No but I was up there that day and overheard the conversation. Depending on how good your memory is I was the guy with the Mamiya 7 and red beard bouncing between the north and south sides of the viewing area. I was actually on the same tram ride up as you and kept trying to figure out where I had seen your face before. Couldn't place it until you pulled out the Travelwide.

Thanks Jason! The orange filter is a good story and even though the B/W conversion looks great, the color version suits the subject too, in an odd sort of way.

I am excited to have added to my collection of Voigtlander APO Lanthar lenses, which are some of my favorite lenses. Got my hands on a nice 10.5cm f/4.5 for a great price. Popped it onto my Linhof 70 and ditched work a tad early to try it out in the swamp.
All the flooding up north has started to make its way down here and now the Withlacoochee River is again at flood stage, making large areas of the park I go to often impassable. I wanted to give this lens a try at a typical middle aperture. Had some expired Ektachrome E100SW film loaded up which, along with the slightly warm tint from the Lanthar, was just right for the waning winter light. Here's my favorite tree, shot at f/11:

Hi all, my first time posting here. These shots were taken on a Hasselblad 500c, either with the 40mm FL or 80mm lens and using Fuji Velvia 50 or Provia 100f films, with some basic post processing applied after scanned.

It's all perfectly parallel, Ron. Your mind is playing tricks on you. It expects lines to converge in an image like this and if they don't, you get the impression that the building gets wider. For this reason, Ansel Adams often didn't fully correct perspective. The man had a point, I think. Having a tool at your disposal doesn't necessarily mean it should be used; sometimes it has unintended effects. However, in this case, I think the perfect correction matches the subject matter and style of the series very well.

Two weeks ago we had a very warm day (+13ºC), heavy rain and a rapid snow melt. The sewer backed up......I'm now in the lull between having the basement torn out and the insurance company approving estimates for repairs, so a little chemical consolation is in order. After a couple of weeks I wasn't sure if I could remember how!

You must be right. The only thing I did to ensure it was all parallel, was taking one of the pictures at bigger size and - as said - at the right side there was a - albeit little - difference (I took the windows at the right - you can only see it with a bigger picture, otherwise the lines are in the way since they are relatively thick). However that was the only difference I could ' measure' in the picture. And I must admit, also looking at 100 year old pictures were lines were corrected, it somehow didn't feel right. This is because our eyes and mind do not correct the falling lines fully. So in these pictures they look overcorrected, at least in my view. In that respect I fully agree with Ansel and his practise

Yeah I have found the same thing - it's an optical illusion. Everything lines up perfectly in Lightroom, but then once the grid is gone, the building looks top-heavy. So I either correct only about 90% of the tilt, or just leave it as is.

Isaac I find myself growing attached to this image, but I have to say this is one of the strangest architectural designs I've ever seen. Is it an old something re-purposed to modern usage? Or someone's mad vision of living spaces of the future? Thanks for sharing this.

This is a completely new build. I also find it particularly strange, but I think a lot of the more puzzling design decisions are actually for expediency of construction. I'm no architect...
Here's another older building.

Nice one. I'm definitely jealous of your drum scans on chromes.
Thank you Bryan. I am happy to scan some for you if you ever want me to :)
I will keep that in mind! :)

I'm sure everyone is sick of photos from the river floods but...yes it's flooding here again! This is a new area I was exploring but it rained so much in the past week the water is up like 15 feet from nominal.
Anyway, I slapped on my 10.5cm f/4.5 APO Lanthar to my 2x3 Century Graphic and went wading. Still trying to get a handle on this lens, but it is just nasty sharp stopped to f/16. Colors are great, of course, bit warm from the lanthanum or whatever but that's how I like it.

Accidental double-exposure that turned out awesome! Or at least I think so. First exposure was with a 135mm f/4.5 Rodenstock Trinar, second one was with 101mm f/4.5 Graflex Trioptar:

And here's one more with just the Tripotar. This lens I recently purchased for all of $25. I've been on a triplet kick, and more importantly I wanted an additional lens board for my 2x3 Century Graphics. So the lens board was worth the $25 to start with, the lens was just a free bonus! And it turns out this lens is an excellent performer, and the lens and shutter is all of like 2 oz. in weight. Here's the image, shot at f/22:
