i found this in ebay
http://www.ebay.com/itm/sinar-p2-4x5-view-camera-early-model-/131274077072?ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123

it says p2. but it looks like p1.
i don't know how to figure different appearance between p and p2.

The easiest way to tell them apart is the Sinar P has a silver finish and the Sinar P2 is all black. The auction that you are looking at shows a Sinar P.

Here is a Sinar P2: http://www.sinar.ch/en/category/products/cameras/p2/

Silver, as opposed to black finish. The p has scalloped knobs whereas the p2 has round knobs with rubber grips. The camera in the eBay listing is a Sinar p.

The P2, as mentioned above, is only ever seen in all black, head to toe. It also, importantly, uses dedicated knobs for swing and axis tilt, rather than the selective single knob on the silver P.

I only had a P, but I think the 2 knob P2 upgrade was necessary, especially if heavily used. I did not like the changeover knob, it felt shifty.

Then there is an economy model 'X" in black also.

Agreed, the selector knob was clunky at best. The stacked knobs are a much smoother solution.

The Sinar X may be easily identified by its red shift knobs and the fact that none of its movements have center detents. As far as I know, it was only ever made in 4x5 (because who would ever say to themselves "I really want an 8x10 P2, but I just don't want to spring for those center detents"?)
