Danke schön Fritz! Developed in Jobo CPA2 (constant agitation), rated at 100, 5min15 developing time at 75F in Xtol 1:1 but the negatives were too contrasty (for my Epson V700 that is). Did some more testing yesterday and reduced development time to 4min30s and they scanned much better. Ofcourse it all depends if you want to scan or print analog. Perhaps I should do some testing with 1:3 dilution to compensate better for the highlights...

I forgot to bring the power supply for my flash, so I under exposed to get the sky and leaves darker. The camera got the dynamic range well, but next time I'll use flash for fill. And I noticed that I'm getting an infra red effect, I'll need to put a IR filter on lenses in the future for models, but it makes leaves look nice.

The camera is on a bean bag on the ground for this shot, and she is at a higher level than the camera.

Most likely 1/400 and stopped down a good bit.

Thanks! Yeah, I've been on a bit of hiatus mainly due to normal life things getting in the way. My father had been gravely ill for a while with cancer, and then passed away in April. I've been shooting regularly since June, but I'm only just now getting around to developing everything. I don't think I'll get caught up with it all until sometime in September. It's not a bad problem to have though. I do wish there were more hours in a day!

I'm building a large format 8x10 digital camera. I'm starting a business to make and sell them, so I don't want to make commercial posts on the forum. Later when the first metal body is ready I'll have photos of the camera. The images give a feeling of large film.

Well definitely keep us apprised! I will be in the market for a 4x5 back for sure, assuming it's not the cost of a house. I hope they are usable in the field (i.e. not tethered). A user last year was posting about this possibility but did not have a working prototype, as you seem to have!

Yes, I'll let you know. I'm keeping costs as low as possible, but large silicon can't be cheap. Do you have a link to the post of the user proposing a 4x5? I plan 8x10 first and then 4x5, and the 4x5 will be half the price.

I took photos outside last week to show that it can go outside. And tomorrow I'll be outside near sunset taking photos. But with tripods and everything it gets a bit heavy. I'm thinking the 4x5 will be a lot more portable.

No severe light leaks so far.
One thing I noticed was that the bellows hangs too far down the front standard and a bit over the lens, blocking the top edge.
I fixed that by letting the lens barrel deeper into the the bellows.

This Petzval lens has a wide aperture of F3.5.
The focal length is 6" which is like a 45mm equivalent so I had a very close focusing distance.
I think I added a bit of swing which again changes focus plane.

Adding to the look is the very soft light from the open sky.
And maybe the fact that the lens is quite low in contrast which gives a very nice tonailty with traditional black & white film like TriX and HP5

For my projects, I give them a handy PDF sheet but basically comes down to once I finish focusing, do not move your head. You can drop your props (some of them are heavy). You can even shift slightly side to side, just don't move your head. So far I have one subject that is slightly "jittery" and I couldn't get a perfect photo of her. Keep trying...

My wife, shot in my newly built skylight studio. This was a test shot to see how the lighting works and how to modify it with diffusion material, etc. 6"x8" collodion negative, intensified with copper/silver. 30 seconds at f/6.3 (thank God for my headbrace! I'd be lost without it). I used an unusual 13" E. Hornster "Plastic" lens from Berlin that I got from MW Classics. It's a Periscop-style lens that requires correcting for CA, but it has a really nice rendition - subtly soft/sharp with a smooth fall-off which looks unbelievably great on the GG, but still figuring out how it works on the emulsion. Obviously, what I see may not be what I am going to get.

As a matter of fact, they DID misrepresent the details. I had already seen the description on a auction site so I knew that it was a periscop design, even though MWC said it was rectilinear. The name "plastic" was a give away that it was a soft focus lens (to some degree, anyway).

Hope this works....not so good with PC's.

My wife, shot in my newly built skylight studio. This was a test shot to see how the lighting works and how to modify it with diffusion material, etc. 6"x8" collodion negative, intensified with copper/silver. 30 seconds at f/6.3 (thank God for my headbrace! I'd be lost without it). I used an unusual 13" E. Hornster "Plastic" lens from Berlin that I got from MW Classics. It's a Periscop-style lens that requires correcting for CA, but it has a really nice rendition - subtly soft/sharp with a smooth fall-off which looks unbelievably great on the GG, but still figuring out how it works on the emulsion. Obviously, what I see may not be what I am going to get.

Great work! Shoot some film to better capture the CA; it has a bigger spectral sensitivity. Compliments to anyone for holding so very still for 30s.

I was trying for a classic Hollywood style look. While I didn't achieve my goal, at least the camera's sensor size imparted a good feeling to the images. There's some tilting, shifting and swinging going on. Making the hands a bigger focal point than the face may not be the best composition. Then the hot light was too hot on the neck, but when I moved the light some to avoid the reflection I didn't like the photo as much.

Playing around with ektascan b/ra xray film 8x10, kodak 305 portrait, pyrocat hd. The girls were patient models today. Like stand at that rock while I get the camera adjusted... OK, now get a chicken and get back in the same spot. Lean forward, turn your body that way, turn your head this way. Look at the camera. perfect....

If you don't mind I have a couple of comments.

I find these last two to have some weird color. Seems magenta shifted. It's a little distracting.

I'm not sure why you've chosen to have the subjects so static, with a centered composition. It doesn't do much to enhance the photo. She also looks really unhappy, or just bored. She has a nice prop, use it to your advantage, especially since (I assume) you have her separate from a convention and have time to do a proper shoot.

Looking at some of your Facebook photos I feel like you use the same background too much. However, these trees are much better than the inside shots on the plain background, which are kind of boring. The concrete overpass / parking deck isn't much better. The best location and best image to me is the Vegeta guy. Some of the framing seems to be off - you cut off one of the props in one.

I think you are getting better / more comfortable maybe, because I do think the newer images are better, but I'd like to see a more dynamic connection between the subject and the viewer. I'd also like to see a unified color palette as they seem to be all over the place, some normal, some with a kind of instagram effect.

Hope you don't mind my comments. I like cosplay and have some friends that are really into it. I've photographed at DragonCon and AWA here in Atlanta...sadly not at DragonCon right now, but looking to go to AWA again this year and shoot a lot of LF. I think cosplay is really suited to LF and color film.

I agree. I really like the paring. My 20 year old daughter isn't into Cosplay but she knows several people who are. They are normal people with an unusual hobby just like us film photographers. ;)

I took the photo at the left in Jan 2014. Unfortunately, Colleen / Princess Agitha left ALA before I could take her casual photo. Then at FAnime, we met up and the photo was ... misfocused Then we met at a cosplay gathering and I accidentally tugged on the film holders and one sheet (out of six) got exposed to the Sun and OF COURSE it's the one with her on it :-[. Finally, this weekend I drove a thousand miles to Sacramento and nailed it. Enjoy!

Jonathan, thanks for the links. The amount of creative work the costumers put it is phenomenal. AFAIK, no one has done a project quite like mine. I know a lot of the people in the community and in fact I have been doing official masquerade photos for many cons over the years. Last year, I found out about the Humans of NY project and a lightbulb came on - that there are faces behind the costumes and masks. Real people, real life, real concerns. So I aim to explore that angle.

A couple of handheld shots at an annual event called "The Happening" for new and returning students at the university. It was brutally hot, something like 98F + ridiculously humid...almost didn't even go. Taken with my Polaroid 900 / Xenotar 135mm, on T-Max, developed in Rodinal 1:120 semi-stand:

Its a preparation shots, i am planning big project in Sept/Oct for MS patients, wanted to make sure that setup would work , before heading off to the real time constricted shooting.
GR is sweet lens indeed, and having shutter helps a lot. I would love to shoot more with 360mm Heliar or even 420, but they are heavier and harder to control with sunlight. In darkened room, with flashes - 360mm Heliar is my most used lens still ;)

Scan once for the highlights then a second for the shadows then merge the two in post?

First of all, yes, some scanner programs, e.g. Vuescan, supports that.

Second, I actually see shadow details, which part are you referring to?

Most monitors cannot display shadow well. I have the ColorEdge CE240W. When I bought it... 5-6 years ago, I tested it against the Apple Cinema Display side by side and the difference is really apparent.

Unless the neg is grossly overdeveloped (and even then - the films tend to shoulder off before a good scanner will run out of DMax), a decent scanner should be able to capture all the information in it. Of course, you then have the problem of too much dynamic range to fit into the output jpeg, which is exactly the same problem as not being able to fit a really high-dynamic-range neg onto a print without making it look flat.

However, you can export your scan as a 16-bit linear positive (including all the dynamic range) and then run that through an HDR program to get a good looking jpeg/print.

While VueScan can do multi-pass scans, it shouldn't be needed for a neg. Can be useful for chromes if you have a scanner with poor DMax though.

Silverfast has an HDR scanning mode, but it never really worked for me. Better to manually tweak the input and output levels...

A big danger is clipping shadow/highlight detail in the scanning software. It can be non-intuitive to make sure that doesn't happen.
