Well, I did a search and couldn't find an existing thread - so I wondered if anyone else had been making photos of cinemas and theatres? I dragged my Wista into work last Friday to make this snap of the (nearly) 90 year old Capitol Theatre interior, since it's coloured ceiling lights have been newly restored:

Snapped with Nikon 65mm f/4 lens on Kodak Portra 160 with an 80A filter.

This is a topic I've been working on. I intend to photograph all the remaining theaters in Chicago which was a very important city in the history of film. There are about 175 existing buildings that at one time or another showed movies. Many theaters are still in business, but generally struggling and slowly going out of business.

Not all of them were big fancy venues.

Here are a few images of a nice theater in Wilkes Barre PA. For years I used the storefront image as my business card. Photographed with my TK45S on Velvia 50.

Indeed. The theater body of work was what first made him an art world household name and is probably still his most widely known work (well, maybe his seascapes are better known due to the U2 cover). You can see a lot more here: https://www.google.com/search?q=Hiroshi+Sugimoto+theaters&client=safari&rls=en&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=PeHXU43kFq2UjALL-YDIDA&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ&biw=1529&bih=1189

Here's a snap of the bio box from Melbourne's Capitol Theatre, featuring two aging Cinemeccanica Victoria 8's. Snapped with Linhof Standard Press and 127mm lens on Kodak TXP320

Man, I love me some Sugimoto! I saw his show here at the MCA years ago and the huge prints were peripheral-filling immersive. Good stuff.
