One of the master minimalists. I should study his work more :D ...and will.
I think Vinny has the top-minimalist award so far, with his ice fishermen.
Here's one I took yesterday. Took two metronome 'poses' actually, one that was definitely not minimalist. But this is the one I first imagined. If you want photo data you can read it on my flickr page (http://www.flickr.com/photos/shampoo_cam/2126616759/).

Oh, this is getting to be terribly confusing. There are apparently also various Matt Blaze's working as pro-wrestlers, porn actors, and photographers. I've never been confused with the first two, but at least once have been confused with the latter.
A while back, I got email from an art director at a local magazine asking if I'm available to shoot a fashion spread for an upcoming issue and can my studio accommodate a motorcycle. Admittedly, it was tempting to just give them the go-ahead to send over a bunch of fashion models and a motorcycle to my apartment. But something was not at all right. I've had a few photos published here and there, but I am very very definitely not a fashion or portrait photographer, and it's not my day job in any case. Turns out there's another photographer in Philadelphia with a similar name who used to do work for this publisher, but somehow, they found me instead.

Got any LF photos that are minimalistic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimalism) ?
Thanks for bringing attention to this art form Ken.
After my last post including a photo that I initally thought minimalistic I have really tried to understand what the 'ism' means or intends to accomplish.
I went from reading the english wikipedia to the swedish one but I am still puzzled.
Is it correct to say that the artists of this form tries to be unsubjective, creating no illusion nor any expression. So does that mean that I as an audience should not feel anything when confronted with music, paintings, sculptures or photographs of this art form?
Ken Lee
26-Dec-2007, 06:20
Perhaps a better term would be "simple". I try to avoid "isms" and extremes.
By focusing our attention, simple images can be very expressive. In the hands of a master, less can be more.
Artists who try to convey no feeling, convey a feeling nevertheless: coldness and sterility. It's a valid feeling, just as all colors are valid colors, and winter is a "valid" season. All seasons have their beauty, but most of us prefer the healthy balance which comes from the complete yearly cycle.
If someone sticks to a cold and sterile art, they probably suffer from some kind of major imbalance.
Patrik Roseen

I apologize for the long post but the subject got me carried away ;-)
Ken as you say, I think the term 'simple' is how minimalism has been applied in photography. I have done some further reading on the web and your request for photographs in this genre is a real challenge in light of what I have found. (I'm not much for ism-s either but it is always interesting to understand what other people are talking about)
The art-form seems more applicable to painting and sculpture according to e.g. below.
http://wwar.com/masters/movements/minimalism.html
Minimalism rejects the need for social comment, self-expression, narrative, or any other allusion to history, politics, or religion. It is based on creating objects of interest and beauty. Minimalists reduced their work to the smallest number of colors, values, shapes, lines, and textures. ... Minimalist art was normally precise and hard-edged. It incorporated geometric forms often in repetitive patterns and solid planes of color, normally cool hues or unmixed colors straight from the tube. Often based on a grid and mathematically composed, the use of industrial materials was common in order to eliminate the evidence of the artist’s hand. Minimalist art strived to create an object with presence, something that can be seen at its basic physical appearance and appreciated at face value...Minimalist artists rejected the idea that art should reflect the personal expression of its creator. There was a lack of emotion and subconscious decision-making in minimalist art, hiding the presence and feelings of the artists. Rather, the artists believed that the viewer’s personal reaction to the object was of higher importance, and thus strove to eliminate the presence of the creator in their work.
How can this ever be applied to photography where alot of decisions are made from choosing the subject, perspective, light, DOF, film, paper, etc? Looking at the wonderful pictures in this thread I can clearly feel the presence of the photographer in the work...it's far from the mathematical approach described above.
Here is an interesting discussion I came across in my search for information about this subject...I think it captures most of the emotional and intellectual phases I have undergone in my search for the answer.

minimalism
Is there a photographic equivalent of the minimalism movement in painting and sculpture? I'm curious to know what photographers have worked in this style, if any. Thanks, Dan
...Yes, but there's not much to it. Hans Beckertprolific ...
The problem I see with minimalism is that the if the intended response is philosophical, the subject is quickly explored and abandoned. Emotional responses to minimalist images can be another matter all together. ...I also think that minimalist technique can be an effective means to keep a complex subject from drowning in it;s own complexity. To my tastes, many of these images are not only simple, they are sterile. Although their colors tend to be strong, they convey a coldness that I can only described as "modern".
It's notable to me that the word "cool" has been synonymous for "marvelous" in American English for decades.
Simplicity need not be cold.
Patrik Roseen

Ken, I fully agree with you regarding the photographs that I linked from the web, but is it not also interesting to note that these particular images actually complies to the form of minimalistic paintings that are talked about.
So there seem to exist two quite different types of minimalistic photographs, the kind which correspond to the 'art-form' as described in my previous post and wikipedia, and that which is minimalistic in its content yet not sterile and cold as shown in this thread.
I can not really makeup my mind as to which is harder to accomplish, but I like the result from the second type better.
This only to say that I think the 'sterile'-type does deserve some respect too when performed well.

...
Rhythmically, this is a balanced composition: odd number of dots, all three pointing in no direction, still all pleasingly interspersed. The artist succeeds in avoiding monotony; partially by using various compensatory blacks and whites, and partially through the use of irony. I have to admit that had I seen this in real life, I would have been attracted to it almost like by a magnet, wanting to push it just a little, to see if disorder can be achieved. I think that the artist -- possibly subconsciously -- probes into this strange destructive appeal (which may also have subconscious roots). He taps into the prankish side of the viewers, testing them on the one hand, and providing with a visual outlet on the other.;)

a certain wonder and reverence at photography's ability to take nature from one place
and transport it to another, and convey some essence of the thing, or the photographers vision, what the artist saw.
sure i was engulfed in the large print of a most magnificent flower, in a certain light, that made me feel the sacred soul of nature... but in reality it was a photo.

What a nice thread of abstracts, thumbs up for everyone.
What failed?
Exposure and tonality.
This was literally the first shot I made on paper, had no clue about the paper's real ISO and just made a wild guess. It came out severely unexposed, it took some creative scanning to pull it out.
I also failed to remember that paper is orthochromatic when I picked purplish red flower in a shiny black pot and placed it on a dark brown background. Essentially I had a little time on my hands, decided to play around with a new camera a bit but didn't feel like burning film.
This was definitely not the intended result, but I still like what came out of it.

Sorry, late coming to this thread. But FWIW I preferred the first version. The second is a pretty picture, the first is a mystery and a mood.

Thank you! I made that image the morning after I had a car accident in the snowstorm that made this snow. On my way home from work hit a patch of black ice under the snow and took out a telephone pole with my Jeep CJ-7. Took the rear view mirror off the windshield with my head and broke the dashboard with my shoulder. Walked away with a few stitches in my head and a sling for my shoulder. My mother (I was still living at home) told me not to go out to photograph it (was in the neighbor's yard) but I told her I had to before the snow melted. :)

I don't remember the camera or lens (it was taken more than 20 years ago) but the film was 4x5 Vericolor 400
Two images I have posted elsewhere on this forum. I'll have to scan/copy more images in this vein one-of-these-days...
Both: Eureka Valley Sand Dunes
TMax 100, 4x5 (PocketView/Caltar IIN 150/5.6), Printed 16x20, Ilford Gallerie graded paper (glossy)

Thanks, Scott. I backpacked with a 4x5 down the length of Isle Royale, and I didn't get very many good images, but I do like this one. The moose cow was eating in the bay, and it was so foggy that they shut down the seaplane. I only had tmx readyloads along. I could've really used the xtra speed of tmy.

This was inspired by Ken Lee, who gave me the idea of photographing a plain white tea cup. Window light and a little fill reflection.

The bellows were extended a good bit to get this close, full shot not a crop.
Schneider Kreuznach G-Claron 9/305 Stopped down a good bit.

Wine Glasses, 2017. Crown Graphic, 135mm Xenar, Harman DPP dev-d in Rodinal. This is a digicam photo of the original print so not an ideal presentation.
