Looking Glass Magazine publishes cutting edge photography by contemporary film photographers, and exceptional writing about the craft we love.

June/July, 2014: Domenico Foschi, Austin Granger, Robert Langham III, Andrew Sanderson, Scott Stillman, Amanda Tomlin

Behold the launching of Looking Glass Magazine, a publication featuring the many faces of film photography. We’ll bring you work both traditional and controversial, innovative and touching, bold and inventive, and yet always inspiring and provocative. You’ll find work by artists who are well known alongside those whose names are unfamiliar (with links to see more of their work) in addition to regular features such as letters to the editor, and the ever-popular Tales from the Lens. Best of all, a one year subscription will set you back just $19.95. Or, if you prefer, purchase individual issues for $3.50 each. When you subscribe, your money helps pay the artists who make up each issue of Looking Glass. We’re looking forward to a long future of bringing you new work in this very old medium, made fresh again and again by generations of photographic artists.

Editor in Chief: Amanda Tomlin
Publisher: Laura Campbell

Bought the 1st issue, and am very impressed. A very well-done publication that allows the text and images to dominate.
I've for long admired Foschi's work in large format. His newer style is also very good.
Though published in 2002, Sanderson's book "Night Photography" is still a valuable resource & inspiration. Glad to see his work featured in your magazine.

Thank you for purchasing our first issue, Doug. I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed it. I love Foschi's Women portfolio. His Los Angeles portfolio (on his web site) is equally great.

Sanderson's night work is some of the best I've seen. He's so very talented.

We have a really nice surprise planned for the next issue. I can't wait to publish it so it can be shared with everyone.

Hi Roger! Thank you so much for subscribing! Just a heads up... the best viewing environment (for now) is a laptop or desktop computer. I'm waiting on an app update for iOS, which is due to be released in about a month. Some of the features, such as html popup, and videos, may not function properly when viewed on mobile iOS, such as the iPad. That issue will be resolved when the app is released. I'm anxious to view it on my iPad too.

Thanks again -- LC

Hi Andrew! Did you receive a confirmation email when you subscribed? If so, then there is a separate email to validate your account. Once you do that, sign into your account (using your email and the password that you created). In your account there should be a tab that says something along the lines of "my magazines" or "my library." Your LG zine issues will be automatically uploaded there. We’ve been getting a lot of positive feedback on the layout and content of our inaugural issue. In the next issue of Looking Glass Magazine you’ll find articles that deal with the shape and challenge of creativity, a sometimes elusive topic that is most difficult to articulate without sounding like an art critic on crack. Good photography is not always about depicting reality, it can be about explaining it, giving it meaning, transcending it without becoming maudlin, syrupy, or gimmicky. Don't miss Dick Garrod’s piece for a better explanation.

Hi,

I read the page before I posted. I read where content can be read by logging onto the site independent of the devices operating system. However if you own an IOS device like an iPad you can download content, unplug and read the magazine without being tethered to a network.

I liked the layout of #2 a lot better than #1. The first ed had some pages with two images per page and the second was limited to only one image per page. This made viewing on the ipad so much better as no zooming was required. Zooming is not bad, just not as clear. Just thought I would note it was appreciated. Really enjoyed magazine, keep up the great work.

I need 'push' printing so it shows up on my desk like mailed magazines.

I just like to read, so I get lots of paper magazines and even more E-Magazines.

But some of the digital screen feed gets glossed over, whereas paper is often read and reread.

I do love E-pub, as over the years have had to divest myself of tons of paper magazines and newspapers or this hoard would be far worse...:)

Please keep it all coming in whatever format.

Thanks for your publication Laura!

If I subscribe now for a year do I get the magazines #1 to #3 also in the box?
Or is my subscription only valid for the numbers published from now on?
Because I like to have also the first issues.
Thanks.

I just received the latest printed Taschen catalog. If you don't get it, do so and become as broke as I am buying their good stuff.

A very good issue with both beautiful images as well as helpful insights: eg, Robert's observation that portraits with large format cameras the people interact to the camera (rough paraphrase).

A quibble: going directly to Joomag from the email I was only able to view the pdf. Had to go thru Lookging Glass site in order to download the pdf.

Thank you again, Gary, for sharing your gorgeous landscapes and written piece with our readers. What's it like photographing large in those conditions? Was hiking required to the locations in your photographs? Many of those locations seem remote. I can imagine that while making the images, the conditions may have been challenging.

Living in the Eastern Sierra, the challenge is usually wind. At higher altitudes, naturally it's really cold as well and most of the locations that I love require 4WD and a bit of hiking.

You are welcome, Laura!
some areas were easy to get to like Lake Louise, in Banff National Park, very toursity. Some required a bit of hiking, for example Lake Agnes ( the snow one ) I was camping in the Kicking Horse River campground in September when a cold front blew in bringing rain to the valley bottoms but snow higher up, Lake Agnes is around 2134 metres ( 7002 ft ) I knew that there would be snow up there, so I hustled my way up the 3.5 km trail from Lake Louise backpacking my 4 x 5 view camera, tripod and lenses, got up there by in the morning sometime, the snow was still fresh and beautiful, by afternoon it had pretty well all melted.

For trips the photos of Purgatory Glacier and Purgatory Mountain, in the Bella Coola area of B.C. I needed a 4 x 4 vehicle which I owned at the time, it was mostly driving over decommissioned logging roads with just a bit of hiking from the logging roads to get those views. The photograph of illecillewaet glacier, in Glacier National Park ( Canadian Park ) is not a long hike but steep, its a 5.7 km hike one way with an elevation gain of 869 metres. With large format gear I take my opportunities where I can find them, sometimes close at hand other times some hiking involved, although I pretty well limit myself to doing day hikes.

Re-upped today, as I really enjoy the magazine.

I'm actually very happy with the electronic version. As far as slow internet connections go, I download the issue and then view it offline. I've done this several times while at my place near Flagstaff using a very weak 3G signal and my IPad. We're talking download speeds in the .19 Mbps - .45 Mbps, takes a little time, but once the issue is downloaded I'm golden.

Laura and crew, thanks for doing a great job.

Hi Doug,

I'm not sure that you're missing a step. As long as you have the link, which you do since you subscribe, I think that download is automatically allowed. I tested download right before I published LG#9 late last night, though I was logged in at the time of my download test. I contacted tech this afternoon and the temporary solution they suggested was for subscribers to login to download the PDF. Since that was described as a *temporary solution* I'm guessing that login shouldn't be required. A ticket was submitted to the engineers by tech and I hope to hear back soon from them.

I'm happy to hear you're pleased with No. 9!

I suggest a series on old time Camera stores that still exist. They are a disappearing species.

http://centralcamera.com/ Chicago in business since 1899. That cover pic on the website is just like it still looks.

In that image, notice the film for sale which is exactly like it looked last month. They have plenty of old film gear in all formats. View cameras to 8x10, darkroom gear, many chems, paper and film to 4x5 and will special order from Ilford.

They also sell modern digital and stock Leica.

I visit whenever I am near and buy something, usually film, every time.

Don, the 3rd generation owner, a font of knowledge, works the floor handing out cookies and worthwhile advice.

There's more to tell, and I think this Store deserves an article with images. Perhaps the hidden side of the over 3 story store. I say over as I have only gotten into 2 stories, but I know there is more...

They are NOT an flossy Internet presence, but sell the old fashioned way, person to person, one at a time for as long as it takes. I have stories. Many others here do also.

I bet Kirk Giddings has a few.

Yes! I love the idea. Let's collaborate to support those businesses. How do you envision the series?

We could begin with an in-depth article, and then create a feature (similar to Looking Glass Loves) to further support and promote camera stores. Let me know your thoughts.

Since this is all work of love, we have no budget and do not need one, but will need to have enthusiasts write about their local camera store treasure, for free and without travel expenses.

We can do interviews with shop owners, management and employees., generally these are family business. There may be many more than we realize. Take pictures.

I know Kenosha, WI has one, but I have never been there. I NEED to go there! There are a couple in Ohio. I can do Kenosha and Chicago, maybe the guy in Des Plaines, IL is still at it.

There are also repair shops to cover and they are all over the world.

We cannot forget International. My friend swears by his repair guy in Istanbul and carries his gear there for repair!

However if we write them all up here, there will be no need to publish in your magazine.

So, we need to go covert...protect our sources and info until you publish. This is sounding better all the time!

I will PM you by Monday.

I have had 2 days of problems with JooMag renewal to LG mag. I was a subscriber for a year and now the site tells me to renew, then it takes my Credit card info twice in 2 days and then rejects my payment as already paid.

However i used the same card both times and it has no deductions and I cannot access the latest issues. So I am not current.

Very confusing JooMag interface, that seems more geared to their continued promotion rather than your magazine.

I'm currently migrating the 'zine in phases. I've completed the first phase (geared toward social media users). Phase 2 will enable purchasing and encrypted downloads directly from the Looking Glass website. I'm working on that this week and am aiming to complete the shop by the end of December for Issue #10. I have access to all subscriptions at Joomag so everyone's purchases through Joomag are secure and will carry over to our new subscription software. The move to the LG server and away from Joomag will provide our readers a much better experience. (Joomag's software is buggy and they have been a source of frustration. I'm so sorry that you guys experienced problems.)

At this time, please don't purchase the 'zine on Joomag.

The link shown below is geared toward social media users, but anyone can purchase/download the 'zine. I hear the check-out process is pretty easy-breezy)

To purchase single issues or subscriptions, please purchase at this link https://selz.com/shop/index/68473?FacebookApp=True&FacebookTab=True, or hold off until I finish setting up the main store on the Looking Glass website (December, 2015)

Looking Glass No. 11: http://lookingglasszine.com/shop/

Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Sacred Bellows,

As with children, we aren’t supposed to have a favorite. That said, this issue stands out among the crowd. Although we plan months in advance, a slot for this contributor or that article, a Looking Glass issue takes on a life of its own and No. 11 is no exception. Eleven is considered good luck in numerology, and I would be remiss not to quote Nigel Tufnel at this point, “This one goes to eleven.” A theme has emerged, they always do, and No. 11 is a how-to manual. It’s not a technical how-to, but a spiritual guide that helps us look inward and reflect on why we do what we do, and how being more present as we work will result in better photographs.

First, an exciting announcement, John Wimberley is going to be a regular contributor for Looking Glass and we would like to welcome him with open arms. As you will see in this issue, Wimberley is a captivating writer and a brilliant photographer. Rather than an essay about the photographs, his piece is an exploration on a way of being, and how a philosophy for conscious living impacts his photography and the creative process.

Also In this issue:
Gordon Undy shares his valuable insight with a photograph by John Wimberley in Undy’s ongoing feature, My Collection. In One for the Road, Jeremy Rabie gives us an inside look at the challenges of learning, and relearning photography later in life. Take a look at our interview with Tom Rambaut and images from his project. You certainly can’t accuse Looking Glass of not covering the Australian rodeo! In Ramblings, David Roberts encourages us to nurture our appreciation for a photographic road less traveled.

Finally, as we walk this quest together, I ask you to participate! How, dear reader, does your inner voice speak to you as you make photographs? We would love to know, and we will post some responses in issue No. 12 and on our Facebook page. You will find the secret link in The Form of a Question (http://lookingglasszine.com/2016/02/26/the-form-of-a-question/).

Thanks, Jim! I love John's work and writing. He's an amazing artist.

Are there cable providers in your area? I've used satellite service in DV. When I camped in the 'hills for a few months in 2008, I had a broadband device that worked pretty well.

Oh good! I'm happy to hear this -- thanks, Roger. We're really excited that John is joining us. I think his column will explain how he makes photographs, maybe similar to Adams' book.

Hi David,

Did you purchase your subscription under a friend or family member's name? I don't see a purchase for your name and that concerns me. I'm looking for any error reports on our server that might shed light on this and so far, all's good at our database.

Laura...how could I have had my head in the sand for so long? My sincere apologies for having taken this long to subscribe! Actually, I'll admit to having some resistance to online mags in general - but in this case, I certain that I'll get over it! Thank you so much, and I look forward to my first issue!
