went to a pre-estate sale (old guy selling off all his gear), and among other stuff..I picked up what seems to be a
Linhof focal plane shutter back
got it to fire - BUT
have no idea how to get it to stay open for focusing
anyone have one???

You set the timer to the B setting and fire the shutter - to keep it open, you turn the release knob with your finger, it then stays in the open position. I assume a locking cable release would work too.
I guess you figured out that after tensioning the shutter, you have to turn the tensioning knob all the way back to be able to release the shutter.

ALRIGHT - everyone calm down
I figured it out - the bottom gauge thing was off so where 'B' actually is does not line up to where it says it is...I put a spot of silver ink where it actually is, so now I can open it up to focus
crisis averted!
