I'm Daniel, and I've made a couple of posts. A year ago I was gifted a Reisekamera, L. G. Kleffel & Sohn, Berlin, for 5x7" plates: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cheffalo/8563731980/in/set-72157627148282242
A week ago I bought two more: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cheffalo/12158148735/in/set-72157627148282242 http://www.flickr.com/photos/cheffalo/12158982806/in/set-72157627148282242

The small one is also for 5x7" plates. I'm looking for film inserts for those. I have one insert now and would like to be able to load all 8 cassettes with film. The big camera is a full plate model so we'll see what to use..

I'm in the last few months of a two year long photographer course and supposedly I'm about to make a living from this soon. I'm very fond of the idea of making portraits with these cameras.

I have one wonderful wife and three awesome daughters, age 1, 3 and 5.

hello Mr Daniel 'Cheffalo'

welcome to this outstanding Forum

some very solid Cameras that you have there, not overly excessive on 'the movements side' but totally suited to, say, portraits

regards

Thank you guys! I'm about to borrow a Sinar Norma, for the movements. A bit heavy to bring outside though..
Christian, I think we met at Planket last year, right?

Yes we did Daniel. Good luck with your upcoming career. We have some Pecha Mucho meetups with local Sff photographer regularly in different studios in gbg. Could be a good way for you to build network but I guess you already have it . See you around.

I'm a bad networker and need to sort that out. I have to join SFF and go to Pecha Mucho's.

That is called sarcasm, it is not a real statement, but a statement that is meant to be a joke. It is a friendly way of saying welcome but by saying it in the opposite of what is really meant, it's hard to translate some of those things when it is not your normal language.

To take a hike is a saying in English that means we would like you to leave, however the way it is stated here, it is not actually mean that and is simply a way of kidding around which of course kidding around may not translate either, but just know it is meant as a joke and is friendly and hope that you can understand this

Ha ha, thanks guys. I know sarcasm (I'm a bit of a master myself) but it's sometimes a bit tricky in other languages. I think I will like it here ;)

:)

I'm jealous of those cameras you have, they are beautiful!

Now go shoot them and post images so we can see!

Oh, and if they are too much if a burden on you I will gladly take them off your hands ;)

Well, the only burden is the formats; full plate and 5x7. All glass plate holders. I need more 5x7 film inserts. I have one (1) nice black and thin insert sent to me by one of our fellow large format wet plate guys. In another half a month I can access the buy & sell forum here, then I will search for more of those.
What to do with the full plate camera.. There are a couple of inserts larger than 4x5 but smaller than 5x7 in some of the cassettes but I can't find film for those.

A bit late to join the party, but ....

The size of the 2 smaller ones is 13x18cm - not 5x7" - it does make a difference - but film is available in Germany.

The tapered bellows ("turn the bellows" type) is French-made and sold by the German retailer you have researched elsewhere.

The other 2 reisekameras are typical German in appearance, but to me look more like the Russian-made cameras made even after WWII. It could be a full plate camera, but is more likely 18x24cm (again, film is available!).

The in-between size you have adapters for is probably 10x15cm - I don't think this film size is available - outside of special orders.

Thank you! I'm constantly mixing the 13x18cm with 5x7" in discussions since I've never yet experienced any differences with the two. So far I've only used 13x18cm film so maybe I'll understand when I get hold of 5x7" film.
French? do we have a couple of possible candidates?
You're right, I've measured 18x24 now and today I saw a fellow darkroom member had quite a few packages of film in that size just sitting there. Though the cassettes are made for plates I don't know how well the film will be levelled in there. I'll have to look for 18x24cm film inserts too..
The in-betwen size was 12x16,5cm. Never seen film that size.

"12x16,5cm"

This is 1/2 plate size. I have bought a number of 13x18 cameras in Sweden and this is a common adapter found in plate holders.

I don't think any of the real makers of french chambre de voyages are known. They have either the nameplate of the retail shop (Photo-Hall etc) or are anonymous. They are often walnut rather than mahogany.

it took me some time to really get me head around 13x18 and 5 x 7, so you're not alone.................

The set you are bidding on is a nice modernised reisekamera, although the 3 lenses are not exciting!

You are not the first to use the same pseudonym here as on auction sites!

Good luck!

He he ;) I placed a bid just to see for how much it's going in the end. It's a friend of mine selling. I thought of going for that one before I found the two others I've talked about here. With nice lenses!

So, Steven and others, I now have some 18x24 Fomapan film. Now I just have to find a way to put them in the wooden cassettes. They're the folding type so maybe the film will sit reasonable good if I just remove the little metal spring that's there to keep the glass tight? And not using the biggest aperture..

Steven Tribe
4-Mar-2014, 02:47
DO NOT REMOVE THE SPRING!

These are difficult to re-install.
If you have the book type plate holders with brass latches, then all you need are thin metal plates. These are placed behind the film and are kept in place by the spring. I have the 18x24 sheath holders, which I use in reverse. This is a far easier operation in the dark compared with "threading" into the 2 folded metal edges. I'll post a series of photos in the right section here.

Thank you for the warning. Too late though.. I've been working in a hardware store so I have a lot of materials to put those springs back, I hope. Please let me know where you put the images!
