I picked up a Toyo 45CF and shot a handful of 4x5 sheets and i love the outcome. I know that one can use a 120 film back for 4x5 cameras, any idea what back i should be looking for a Toyo 45CF. If you use one please let me know this will help me out greatly.

My current LF camera is the Toyo 45a. I have a Singer Graflex 120 back in the 6x7 format. They are universal as long as your camera accepts them.

You can use any Graflok-type back, or one that can slide in like a 4x5 film holder. But watch out for "Baby" Graflok backs. These will fit only 2x3 cameras. http://www.bnphoto.org/bnphoto/LFN/CamProf_Accessories.htm
Your best bets are Horseman Graflok backs and Toyo slide-in backs.

the Toyo roll film holders will fit under the ground glass. As will a calumet holder. I don't think the Graflex ones will. I have an AX but I think the back panel is the same.

Hi Dan:

A quick question about the 45AX: I assume you don't need any other devices to use the Toyo roll film holders? Per this page: http://www.toyoview.com/Products/Accessories/45AIIac.html there seem to be two kinds of holders. I'm guessing the "Precision 120 Roll Film Holders" can be directly inserted?

The Toyo field cameras all have "Graflok style" backs. The whole focusing panel comes off and a roll film holder or other graflok accessory can be attached directly to the back with the little slider thingies.

I use a plain old Graflex roll film holder with the Toyo 45CF.

Thanks Brad. I was wondering if you can attach these without removing the focusing panel setup. I.e., as if you are inserting the film holder behind the ground glass.

Back in the early '80s I owned a monorail Toyo 4x5 camera along with Toyo's "Quick Roll Slider" or QRS. (All stolen along with my 90mm f/5.6 Super Angulon, other LF lenses, Nikon system, Leica system, 16mm film camera gear, etc. etc.!!!!) :(

The QRS replaces the whole normal film back - ground glass, etc. The QRS has it's own ground glass with marks for 6x6cm, 6x7cm, etc.

The design is a horizontal layout with the ground glass on one end and a place to attach a roll film back next to it. I used roll film backs from my RB-67 system.

To use, you move the back so the ground glass is in alignment with the lens. Focus, compose, etc. then close the shutter - all normal for LF cameras. Then you press a chrome button which unlocks the QRS and slide it so the film back is now in the exact same location that the ground glass was. Make your exposure. Wind the film. Rinse & Repeat.

I used my Toyo camera + QRS back for projects such as jewelry product photos where I could take advantage of the view camera's movements yet save the client money by shooting with 120/220 roll film. Now I own a similar QRS for my Cambo system.

Do you have US $69 to spare? Here is a Toyo Quick Roll Slider on the KEH website today:

I just sold my cambo 6x7 roll film holder for 4x5, it slips under the ground glass and works well, I also own a 6x12 version that I'm keeping.

They look like this...

110820
110821
110822
110823

There are other holders but few will fit under the ground glass

Very nice! Thanks for the various links Terry, this is very interesting. I assume I still need to get the actual film holder to go with this slider? Any suggestions there?

I was also looking at this holder which seems to go behind the ground glass: http://www.keh.com/camera/Large-Format-Back-and-Magazine-Accessories/1/sku-LF120090076570?r=FE From what I can tell, you focus using the regula GG and then slide this behind the glass instead of a standard 4x5 film holder.

PS: Losing any equipment is painful and to lose such a collection is just horrible. I really feel for you; any luck trying to recover it at all?

Wow that's a great price for that Toyo back, I would snag that right away if I were you.

Yes, you will need a roll film back but the nice thing is that there is a wide selection of image sizes: 6x4.5cm, 6x6cm, 6x7cm, etc. in other words, any roll film back designed for an RB-67. I suppose you might even be able to put a 70mm film back on it.

The nice thing about the Toyo QRS is now easy and smooth using it is. Unlike the other back you referenced where you have to physically insert and remove it for every shot, with the QRS you simply smoothly slide it between ground glass and film.

Please, if you can, take advantage of that $69 offer at KEH. Be sure to get in writing the condition it is in. The thing is solid metal so unless it fell out of an airplane there is not much that can go wrong with it. :)

My studio was wiped clean back in the mid-80s. They even took my Omega D4 enlarger. Everything. Only the paint was left on the walls. Fortunately I had my RB67 kit in the car along with my Sunpack 611 strobe kit, I used that gear to rebuild my business.

Being that I was young(er) and stupid, I had no insurance.

Yeah, I'm considering getting it. I think I finally figured out the different types of roll film holders for the Toyo cameras (at least the 45A/AII/AX line). There are two kinds of adapter provided by Toyo:

1) Those that fit into the "Quick Roll Slider" - these are part numbers 8032 and 8034 for 6x7 and 6x9 respectively and will need the QRS which replaces your existing rear assembly. Terry was referring to these above
2) Those that directly fit into the 4x5 backs on 45AII/45AX (but probably not on the CF model) - these are part numbers 8031 and 8033 for 6x7 and 6x9

Sorry if this is well known information, but it's been driving me nuts for the past few days and I thought this might helpful to others that may be interested...
