View Full Version : Your "go-to" lens for a 5x7?

So as a theoretical or perhaps practical exercise, what lens (focal length wise) is your #1 go-to lens for your 5x7?

As a brief follow-up, you might say why that lens/focal length is your go-to choice.

Thanks in advance!

(the thought occurred that if I could parse all 5x7 images posted to the forum and somehow extract what lens they were shot with, I would have my answer, but that would take some advanced data mining...)

180mm Schneider-S or any other decent 180. Why? It just is right about 80% of the time.

10 3/4" Dagor

If I had to name one, it would probably be my 210mm, f6.3 Komura.

But I use some other (cheap/good) ones depending on task:
Portraits/long: 380mm, f5.6 Wollensak, 10" 6.8 Conley V.
Wides: 104mm f6.5 and 159mm f9.5 WA Raptars, 90mm f8 and 152mm f3.5 Komuras.
(Everything on small, Linhof sized boards).

210mm

Normal -- because nothing in my life seems to be.

My other option is a Wollie Series IIIA Ex.WA f12.5 8x10 (6¼" / 159mm) -- why, because it is 'suppose' to cover 8x10 but doesn't...so on the 5x7 it goes. At least it is in a working shutter.

Nearly always 210, I tried 240 then 180 and settled in the middle. Maybe one of the nicest all round lens designs for 5x7 would be a 210 tessar such as 8 1/4 inch commercial ektar, 210 fujinar, some other tessar in that focal length. However lots of rise will not be possible, so if you need that then an inexpensive plasmat or a non gold ring 8 1/4 dagor would work.

210mm is my most used but I'm finding I grab the 180mm more and more these days.

Centar Series II 10.5/21" -- rebranded B&L Rapid Rectilinear convertible. (Equivalent to 56/112mm in 35mm format.)

9 1/2 golden Dagor in Copal, followed by the 6" dagor or WA Dagor followed by the 19" Artar

180/315 Symmar, or 210 Fujinon-W. Also, 8-1/4" Dagor.

I keep my 110 XL mounted on my 5x7.

8 1/4" goldrim Dagor.....if there were only one lens this would be it.
We'll see if the newly mounted Galli (thanks Jim) 240 Heliar does at elbowing in...

210 Symmar cuz it seems to match how I see

Depending on what is required, usually:

#1, 8-1/2" Kodak Commercial Ektar in barrel. This one stays on the Sinar with the Sinar shutter..

*12" Commercial Ektar in barrel.

*110mm Symmar XL in Copal shutter.

*19" Red Dot Artar in barrel.

This is what lives in the camera case, if there is something specific I'm looking for there is a pile of others lenses to choose from.

Looking back at my 5x7 shots, 150mm has been my most used focal length with 300mm second & 600mm third.

about 90% of my 5x7 LF photos were made with the the 210mm Sironar-N. At the time, I would also use the 150mm Fujinon-W

On the Speed Graphic movement isn't an issue, so the 203 Ektr gets the nod. On the Agfa, a 159mm WA yellow dot Wollensack or 14" Apo Artar see the most use.

At the present there are two Bausch & Lomb Rapid Rectilinear elements screwed into the shutter. I believe they have a focal length near or about 177mm when used together, and 290mm when used separately, which also covers 8x10 nicely. Every time I "go to" open the camera, there they are.

In order of most used to least used:
240A Fuji, 450C Fuji, 180A Fuji, 300A Fuji, 90mm Nikkor

The 450C is only 3 shots "behind" the 240A though, so I'd call them an "even" tie because I sometimes forget to record exposures

A 125SW Fuji should be landing anytime now, for some reason that's been a missed FL in the kit(that I'd be reaching for almost first, all the time). But somehow I end up finding something else to frame up instead ;)

When I had a 5x7, it was an 8-1/2 inch commercial ektar.

203mm f/7.7 Ektar; sharp, compact, and light. Also good on 4x5.

I used to carry three lenses with my Canham MQC57- Nikon 120SW, Nikon 180W, and Nikon 300M.

Sold the Nikons, and now carry a Fujinon f5.6 180W and a Fujinon f6.3 250W.

Those two lenses seem to cover 98% of my 5x7 shooting needs.

I currently do not have a dedicated 5X7 camera. Rather I use 5X7 reducing backs on my two 8X10s. On the field camera, I primarily use a 19" Artar in Universal shutter; and occasionally a 265mm lens. For studio camera I use 21" configuration of TR triple in a Packard shutter. I like the telephoto for isolating the subject whether portraits or narrow scenes. If I ever do get a 5X7 camera, will make sure it has sufficient bellows for the 19".

My two favourite lenses on 5x7 are my 10" Commercial Ektar and my 36cm Tele-Xenar. I didn't expect to love the Tele-Xenar as much as I do, but it has continued to surprise me again and again. Looking forward to trying a 12" Dagor in this format.
