Hello LF folks, am not really active but i read a lot and really enjoy this place. thank you all.

am about to start reconstruction of Linhof Technka IV serial 67514, my Christmas gift! this sad fellow was left in a basement for 20 years without box or a bag. as strange as it sounds all movements work and they work smooth! linhofs are build as tanks!
someone sis not know how to close this camera so it brooked off one of bed hinges. also one corner (same side as missing hinge) of the bed is missing but this is not affecting focus, also one of lens board stops is missing...
bellows and leather grip are disintegrated and body trim looks alive but over all corrosion is minimal. i will probably have to find or make several screws that wont survive full disassembly. i have lathe and a mil and bunch of watchmakers tools that will come to a play with this restoration.

my goal is not to make nice camera but working one. i think i can get away with one hinge only. also my plan is to remove RF and cam system, replace bellows and put new leather trim, clean and repair as much as i can and ask some leather worker friends to make me a new strap handle.

this is my fifth linhof and cant stop loving them more and more. i cuold allways sale it for parts but i really thing there is a chance that i can make this in to a camera again. it would be really nice t see it operational once again.

now this is a shopping list: new mellows and new leather

cameraleather.com can supply a die-cut set of leather or leatherette pieces for a Technika.

Custombellows.co.uk can supply a replacement bellows.

Good luck with it!

quick update: Bellows are ordered and i should have them any day now. leather covers are also ordered but it will take some more time till i have them. there was a bit of work to disassemble camera, old and corroded screws and things that ware stuck but at the end all went well and i didnt brake any screws. old leather was really discussing and full of mold and it disintegrated instead of peeling off, that really gave me a lot of work to remove old adhesive from a metal. camera is almost clean, but i still need to go one more round and give it a final clean. there was a lot of work to clean all the screws form rust. i also " amputated " RF because i wont use RF and wont make any cam's.
am still waiting to see if i can source missing parts. so far i have no luck! finally it looks like i will just have to machine all the parts. i would prefer to find parts but then again making parts for your camera has its charms.
i will keep updating as i progress

Looking much better, Luka, keep up the good work.
The Chinese bellows are absolutely fine, I have replaced bellows on five cameras using Chinese bellows, and two of those cameras were Technikas.

UPDATE: today new obstacle presented its self.

http://i637.photobucket.com/albums/uu96/nejad_ljemani/image_zps5cdb785d.jpeg (http://s637.photobucket.com/user/nejad_ljemani/media/image_zps5cdb785d.jpeg.html)

as i discovered this camera was opened when it was dropped, corner piece of bed is missing and on a same side hinge is missing, that knew but what i didnt know is that shock stripped treading in a holes not just on this side problematic side but also on the other side. thats why i got hinge and a siring in a plastic bag. worst side had even bigger problem hole its self was deformed and it ripped and there is minimum amout of metal left... it didnt look good at all!

it was time to make some bushing and cut some custom stuff. my friend Mark gave ma a hand and we repaired one side. basically we opened a hole a bit, made new treads put a new screw and what we needed to make all this work ware new bushings that rill fit new diameter. everything went perfect it Works! bed is really solid! and i think i can get away with using only one side for now.

http://i637.photobucket.com/albums/uu96/nejad_ljemani/photo01_zpse2b60117.jpg (http://s637.photobucket.com/user/nejad_ljemani/media/photo01_zpse2b60117.jpg.html)

this was just repair on a "good" bad side needed a different bushing and screw
we re taped that side too. now only thing missing in there is a spring. tomorrow i am going to see a friend that had spring winding machine and ma going to try to make one.

missing hinge is next thing to deal with. its relatively easy to make this part only thing that i need now is stock of same tickles. i would really like to find the original parts but i had no luck so far. however if i need to make one hinge i need to make two of them so at list camera is symmetric and it will look less as patch work. materials i was thinking of using is bronze (easiest to work, really hard and not that heavy) or to go with something more high tech and be in a spirit of the Linhof, 7075 aerospace aluminum alloy. in any case i am still looking and hoping to find the parts

quick update on the project: duet to way to much watch repairs i didnt have enough time to play with this toy. finally last night i had glue and solvent sniffing 4h marathon and finally this fellow has new skin. cleaning up old adhesive turned to be biggest pain on this project so far. now i need to make a new cover for the side where rangefiner was and its finished. tonight i will install bellows so hopefully i will take first shots with this camera tomorrow :)

Projects like this are never finished, there is always some component that can be changed with better one, and it can take forever so you can say its finished! for me project is finished when its 100% operational and when it can do what its for. in this case this camera is ready! it works and am making some test shots with it ASAP. several small things left to do: laser weld part of a bed lock, make a new better lens-board hinge and finally rebuild the viewing hood that looks like it was in compost!

Yes, I was wondering about the viewing hood; I don't often see spares for that, and figured that you'd have to re-make one.

Great restoration job! It looks great! I am rebuilding a Tech III myself. Where did you get ahold of a leather hand strap? And did you use anything to clean off the chrome before you put the new leatherette on? I was thinking of taking some super fine steel wool to mine to try to smooth and polish up the chrome bits, but didnt know if this was a good idea or not....

Today on a program was Viewing hood, this part looked like it was in a composite but i unfortunately didnt take the photo of it. leather was molded and almost alive and metal parts looked like a toilet cover. i blasted with corse aluminum oxide and then powder coated it. now am waiting for the viewing hood leather from the same guys who did a bellows. i also ordered new Yanke focusing screen with Fresnel... things are coming along

O its something to clean it. you need to go several hands. first peel it off then mechanical scrub, am using teflon screwdriver thats soft to schrach a metal but it will annihilate any old adhesive. it takes about 5h of work to skin a linhof. finally i use Go-gone but be careful because all the product will leave residue so finally you have to clean with lighter fluid, i always use methanol. strap was made by one of my friends whou makes leather straps for watches and if you want i can get you one form him. shoot me PM and i will give you his email

Vick my friend has it and i do all my welding in his shop. its a micro welder that is used in jewelry, watchmaking and prosthetics. there is a limitation for how big things you can get under the microscope but anything smaller then 4'' is ok
