MF (6x4.5,6x6,6x7,6x9,6x12) B&W film images sharing

I do not thing that there is a thread for images for B&W film MF images only.
I use a Kodak Medalist II as my backup/handheld camera when traveling and I am sure that many of us also use a small MF film camera as a backup.
Some are also using a digital one and there are plenty of such images in the "Safe Heaven for Tiny Format" thread.
I personally enjoy more browsing B&W film images in the limited time I have for such so I am selfishly checking if others are so inclined by starting this thread.

If this is a problem, I am sure the Moderators can close the thread and if there is no interest then the thread will die a natural death by starvation, in either case with no harm, no foul done.

Thank you ToadMen, StoneNYC, andreios, ari and others. It's always a great feeling when ones work receives praise.

This was taken in early May, 2002 while visiting Yosemite with my then-girlfriend. We had hiked the Mist Trail mid-afternoon. As we approached the steps leading to the top of Vernal Falls I happened to turn around and saw this scene presented just as you see it. It was, as Fred Picker had mentioned in one of his newsletters, a "free gift". It really was. All I had to do was to catch my breath, meter, focus and press the shutter. My initial response on seeing the scene before (or behind me) was that it looked similar to images I'd seen of some precipitous and impossibly beautiful terrain in China. At the same time it almost appeared Wagnerian with its epic sense of light and shadow. But for now, there it was, free for the taking.

I like this image of Yosemite because it doesn't look like the sort of images people would expect to see coming out of Yosemite. Yet it is powerful and commanding. The image printed easily on Forte Polycontrast Warmtone Fiber. The scan is from a print about 8"x 8". This is another image I hope to be able to print much larger at some point.

The Rollei proved excellent for hiking. It's compact, fitted with a lens beyond reproach and can be handheld, if needed. For this shot it was on a tripod.

Sorry for the prattle. I really appreciate the many kind remarks and felt compelled to tell a little bit of the story behind it.

Wow that's incredible, I don't think I ever thought of exposing D3200 at such a high EI before, it looks amazing, almost like IR with that ice, and also I'm surprise and 30 seconds even that it was just so bright, and I say that only because I know how bad the reciprocity failure is on D3200.

I totally agree, I've been trying to take a shot like this for years and for some reason haven't been able to accomplish it, I once spent an hour outside trying to light paint a tree branch to get this effect with no avail, though the frozen winter look only happens about once or twice a year here, and it's often gone fast, I got a night shot of the last one, but have to digitalize it :)

Thanks Jonathan and Stone! I attribute the results to regular use of one TLR to the extent that I can have a feel for how the backgrounds are going to render at different apertures and distance relationships. This stuff is probably around f4.5. It's also got more aperture blades than newer TLRs for a smoother rendering. For these photos, I got behind/under the downed branches and shot out, rather than simply walking up and shooting.

Here's two more, then a Holga shot. Second roll in a Holga. First roll I only got a few shots off because I had to learn to take the lens cap off. Don't get that sort of cursing with dslrs/TLRs/LF.

I've been doing a bit more MF lately than LF. It's because I'm sneaking them in during the workday rather than quality photo time.

Old barn on Route 220 Washington Maine. Rolleiflex automat tessar, tmy2 film in pyrocat hd. Avoided major need for tilt/shift by not centering or putting down low in the frame the structure. Wouldn't have minded a crispy 4x5, but I only had soft focus lenses or a 203mm optar in the truck and needed something a little wider.

I like the second one very much. Quite often I think a little "natural" perspective is helpful to avoid completely flattening the image, and in this case the low angle and slight upward convergence of vertical lines are pluses not minuses. I am guilty of often trying to use camera movements simply because I can, but there are times when they can detract rather than add to an image. Knowing when to refrain is not always easy--unless you use a camera devoid of them, of course.

Quite often I think a little "natural" perspective is helpful to avoid completely flattening the image, and in this case the low angle and slight upward convergence of vertical lines are pluses not minuses. I am guilty of often trying to use camera movements simply because I can, but there are times when they can detract rather than add to an image. Knowing when to refrain is not always easy--unless you use a camera devoid of them, of course.

Thank you. Definitely the light was more dramatic for these three shots than the first one. HP5 could be almost my only film in 4x5 and 120.
But I have 120 rolls of other films and none left of HP5...:rolleyes:
Also if I shoot with the roll film backs on the Saber which has a Sironar-N, the modern films come out very nicely.

Good plan, that VP backing paper is very cool looking (I have one roll) but it's a lot stiffer than the EFKE stuff and tends to make less-flat pictures on backs with old springs. Alas...

The EFKE 127 I've shot all had EFKEitis, and I wouldn't use it ever again unless I were desperate, but I would use the backing paper...

Edit: Also, the Sunny 16 Rule tends to give me deeper shadows as in this example. When I want to favor the shadows, the sunny 11 seems to work better naturally.

Thanks. No, I cut the normal development time by nearly 1/2. It gives me both finer grain and compress the highlights. My old Rolliecord has an exposure table on a placard on the back. It's basically is the Sunny 11 Rule with season adjustments given.

Well, when your exposure time is 1/15 second at f16 with 100 film doing that process, 400 film gets you a bit more shutter speed. And the grain of 400TMY ends up being about the same as 100TMX. So it's like shooting 100TMX normally with a yellow filter on. The amount you cut the development time is developer dependent.

First time, of course. You stand there studying the waves and you learn what waves are going to make what kind of splash. Then I waited till there was one with a curling wave right behind it. Can't meditate on the waves forever though, because the tide will change and it'll work different.

Austin, toghether these two photos are like a meal. First is the simple main course, hearty in composition and gentle seasoning of story. The second is a rich heavy desert of multiple layers of chocolately toned chrome and planes of covetousness (or mitty imagination), self expression, and reality.

Hi Jonathan. Thanks. The speaker was in mid-morning, under a clear blue sky. I used a yellow filter which is rare for me. I'm trying out that pre-visualization thing I've heard about. Ha ha. The second one was made at night. Unfortunately, both of these suffer from stubborn scanning artifacts, especially in the blank areas. That's a problem that I've never been able to really solve. Luckily, it doesn't come up for me too often. I was so aggravated by it here that I actually added a little "grain" in the sky areas to try and hide it. It kind of worked I guess.

With the speaker image I wasn't sure if it was slightly underexposed/filtered daylight or a longer exposure at dusk. Could be either, not that it matters. Most of the time I get too hung up on "proper" exposure that I forget to adjust for how I want the final image to look. Scanning or printing can offer some room for adjustment, of course, but it is much easier if the negative gives you what you're looking for from the get-go.

As for scanning artifacts, I feel your pain. My scanner gives me fits with dense areas, adding bands and lines and everything else I would never want cluttering up my highlights. Not only that, but my scanner's flatbed/opaque light source has gone out, so I can only scan negatives at this point. (Luckily the two lighting components are separate, although with one having gone out I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop). If only I had a "real" darkroom up and running...but then you'd hear me bitch about spotting my prints and dodging and burning troubles. The grass is in fact always greener.

Thanks! My sister and her family live in Maupin, Oregon, and I try to visit them every other year if not more often. I love it out there. Last December was pretty brutal weather wise in that area, there was an inversion layer and the snow just stuck to everything the entire time I was out there. Made for some interesting shots though...

I've recently visited an abandoned quarry in the next town over for the first time. (We were discouraged from visiting there growing up). Still got a ways to go before I match the chops of Burtynsky or Caponigro for this activity. Did manage a couple LF sheets but haven't developed them yet. I actually asked myself the same questions but dismissed it on account to my ignorance :D
I have shots focusing infinity on aperture (pardon my french) who got everything but the closest edge within DOF but it is much less sharp. Oh well, i'll see how it looks under the enlarger :)

I once traveled up and down little Antelope Canyon 4 times crawling over some constipated blighter attempting to focus his 4x5 with each pass. By my last tour, I grabbed a little dust to sprinkle down upon him and his love, just to make certain he was becoming one (…ohmmmm) with the landscape.

Thanks Andrew. It's just something that caught my eye as I was driving past. I think it's interesting how these types of fences slice up whatever is behind them if you're the right distance away. Someone else said the hedges made them think of a firing squad-ha!

If you are going to the Gers (land of the Armagnac) and to the Perigord (land of the black truffle) as you should than I would recommend staying close to Condom and Sarlat and go visist the small village saround.

Hi Jeff, and welcome aboard.

You've made a good start using Acros. It's by far my favorite film for MF and LF images.
It will run rings around any other b&w film in that speed range.

In particular, you really can't over-expose or under-expose it.

On the bright side, the density just keeps increasing, particularly if you use a compensating developer.
On the dim side, no reciprocity correction required up to 2 minutes, and only 1/2 stop up to 1000 seconds.

Looks like some PS color adjustments as the two colors don't match, you added more saturation in that first one.

Hi Toad...

I'm like pretty sure it was Portra, and then I converted it to B/W. I believe it was the only film I had at the time. Shot with a 50mm. I like the camera, but it's a freak'n beast to carry around all day in the summer shooting street guys.

Hi, thanks for the info. I like the sharpness and atmosphere of the images.
A 50 mm lens on 6x7 cm is like 26 mm on 35 mm film, or am I wrong? Did you creep right up to them or are these cropped?
