Big money too, they start at $100k

I knew a guy with one, he often rode it to Wednesday night Vincent Club at a Chicago bar, they drank, they bragged, they rode back to the suburbs. Then the night moved to an industrial area with a bar, crazier.

Chicago PD never chased a bike...

First somewhat successful film astrophotography image. Taken with my Pentax 67ii and 500mm f/5.6 lens, tracked for about 20 minutes IIRC on HP5+. Unfortunately Orion is setting earlier now so probably won't be able to try again till next year, and I'll go for a longer exposure and try to get more detail in the nebulae - I am happy that I can just start to see the Flame Nebula coming in next to the belt stars. The highlight detail is impressive in the Orion Nebulae compared to digital images - I'm interested to see how a very long exposure with pyro developing would handle this scene.

tuco, this is an arresting image and so much fun, immediately engaging and full of all sorts of little surprises that take time to discover. The composition and printing are truly a delight.

Nice, moody photos. Stormy? Looks that way.

This sent me for a good geography lesson! I wasn't sure whether or not NH is landlocked, but I see it is not. It's also interesting that Maine and NH share those dinky islands!

John Layton
12-Apr-2021, 04:03
Thank You! Thing about those MF versions...while I'd originally thought I might enlarge them to at least 30x40 - going for a really moody, grainy, ethereal feel...these really don't work well (for me) much larger than 20x24. But the LF (5x7) versions work really well - up to 40x60.

Star Island (one of the "Isles of Shoals") is very small...about 450 acres - but is home to a U.U. Church based conference center, and is more like a small village - but only in the summer months. A wonderful community, and while my wife and myself are not church goers, and while most of the conferences are not religiously oriented, there is indeed a spirit to the place (and those who attend) which is much akin to our own.

Plus...the island (or at least the very diverse, convoluted periphery) remains relatively wild. I can be photographing at East Rock, or at East Bay below this - and, especially when the fog and surf are simultaneously active, it feels as if I'm at the end of the earth. And yet, within minutes, I can be up at the conference center...itself a large, old (150yrs) wooden structure (built in the tradition of NH's "Grand Hotels"), perhaps sitting in one of the forty or so rockers on its long, wraparound porch...chatting with one or more kindred spirits about art, history, the weather, what have you (maybe even photography!).

But I've saved the best for last! I've been going out to Star with my wife for the past 12 years (sadly canceled last season, but hopefully back this year)...always for the same ten days in early Sept. - as my wife, a nurse practitioner, volunteers as medical staff...and I get to be her "guest." Costs us nothing, and while I do tend to do a bit of volunteer work on the island (typically carpentry-related), I'm always sure to let the volunteer coordinator know that if the fog rolls in, I'll likely drop what I'm doing so that I can be out on the rocks photographing! Seeing as I've donated several prints to help the island raise funds...the coordinator has no issue with this!

Finally, I do need to mention that the island's entire population heads to the mainland after late Oct., and for the next six months there is but one inhabitant...a caretaker names Alexandra de Steiguer, who happens to be an amazingly talented photographic artist, who has a wonderful book out, called "One Woman's Island," based on her twenty two years of care taking at Star. She's also represented by the Pucker Gallery, located on Newbury St. in Boston. Look her up!

Having given up on Adobe, I have lost the use of the ColorPerfect plug-in for PS. Affinity Photo has only a rudimentary invert command, so I have been trying to find my best way of dealing with colour negatives in the future, assuming I bother with them as I do prefer B&W. This was an Ektar 100 shot, developed in a Unicolor presskit, and taken with the Rolleiflex before the great camera sell-off. This time I scanned it as a raw file with Vuescan and the Nikon 9000, inverted it with Graphic Converter, then tweaked it with Apple Photos and Nik's Color Efex Pro 4 and Viveza 2. This is about one quarter of the original negative, so it's a bit soft, but it didn't come out too badly, given the awkwardness of Ektar.

Check out PhotoLine; plays well with the ColorPerfect plug-in. It is a bit of a learning curve until you understand their terminology for similar PS things, but in many ways it's actually more powerful than PS. And, the price of admission ain't bad, either.

I've had surprising luck with Affinity by doing auto-color before an invert. For challenging inversions, I fall back to Darktable and the negadoctor plugin.

Thank you! It does work and only cost me $46CDN. One note for users of modern Macs, you have to install both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions of the ColorPerfect plug-in for it to be recognised. Secondly, since the plug-ins are Intel versions, if you have a new ARM-based Apple Silicon Mac, you must run PhotoLine in Rosetta. Then everything works as it should.

Austin: You've been very busy, the St. Helens work is fascinating.

Here's my recent find. A 1916 Harley Davidson that CycleBarn let me photograph. It's usually in storage, but I happened to be there when they brought it out for some work and returned with lights the next day. 80mm lens, TriX in HC100 "B", scanned from print.

Finally got to meet Clyde Butcher on my 3rd trip to the Venice/Sarasota area. One of his employees helped me setup a little meeting at the famous live oak in Myakka River State Park. I gave him a 12x20 contact print of the tree behind us I shot over the winter. We chatted for almost 2 hours and then got dinner. The next day he met me at his gallery and gave me some 12x20 film to feed the Wisner!

I setup this shot before he got there and my wife tripped the shutter. Taken with a Rolleicord I "Art Deco" older than Clyde on HP5+ film, dev'd in Pyrocat:

Story time. I took this photo on 4x5 out of pure frustration. The composition was absolute garbage so I cropped it heavily, to about 50x100 millimeters. I was very mad at myself because I had just broken my camera.

Our last day of vacation, we woke up at 4:30am to get out to the beach for sunrise. We had some unfortunate traffic on the one-lane road for some reason and the horizon was lighting up with all kinds of gorgeous colors. I was really excited, but I had planned to take my 12x20 out on the beach...it was too late for that, at least for sunrise. So I quickly grabbed my Intrepid 4x5, which is the newest black version with 3D-printed parts...

I slapped it on the tripod, using the Arca-style clamp I have been using. About 3/4 of the way to the beach (we had to walk in because the park is technically closed, but you can pay and walk in from the gate), the camera inexplicably just fell off the tripod. I have no idea if my rushing somehow knocked it off or I just haphazardly didn't tighten things down like I normally do, but it crashed into the sandy path. No big deal, I've done worse I thought...but nope, it hit right on the front standard and ripped out the bushing for attaching it to the focus track. Great!

So I went down to the beach and we saw a spectacular sunrise. I grabbed my Instax camera and snapped a few square images (which were gorgeous) but then I looked at my 4x5. What a mess. Now I have to see if I can get spare parts. Really mad, I just aimed the camera in the general direction of the sun because it was honestly astoundingly nice and this is what I got.

https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mZdzN-MR8cg/YNPxuATztEI/AAAAAAAANv8/x2eZRyd9YvcIObbGpLuo2GugZbFt48h-gCLcBGAsYHQ/s1200/keys2021-7061s.jpg

Afterwards we went back to the car, I grabbed the 12x20 and made 2 more images. Really, the right way to do this is to get to the beach about an hour and a half before sunrise (5am), at least if I want to not be rushed, but this was our 7th day on the road so we were tired. Well so it goes.

I just got my Minolta Autocord back from Dan Daniel, who serviced it and replaced its broken leatherette, so I had to take it out for a test. This image is one from 2 rolls of Delta 100 I exposed this morning.
12 second exposure at f11.5, rating the film at 50 ASA. Processed in the new Kodak Xtol batch I just received as replacement for the effed-up 2020 Xtol batches.

The Rokkor f3.5 lens on this camera is outstanding. I believe it is actually sharper than the Planar in my Hasselblad, which is quite remarkable.

I had the opportunity to play with a Bronica GS-1 over the weekend. A fellow I know is trying to sell it to me, but I'm already heavily invested in RB67 gear and don't have a lot of cash to throw around, so it was actually quite cruel of him! I shot this on HP5 using the film speed I'd tested for on the RB and letting the AE do all the work on the Bronica. The exposure was actually pretty darned accurate!

Long time ago, had a Hasselblad 500c, with a 45 degree prism. I hated it, sold it, never looked back. Buuuut, I have a personal project I need high-speed flash sync and TTL viewing so HB was back on the menu. Finally found the right outfit for me at the right price, and took it for spin to test it this afternoon.

https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EKIu7HDzSZg/YO5RzJW64aI/AAAAAAAANyw/hoDUClzxRwQAbKssAIN0S9KzCZKGyzuvQCLcBGAsYHQ/s700/hb-7202s.jpg

That's my hybrid RAV4. Shot wide-open with the 80mm CF. These are on Delta 100 pushed 2 stops.

One more, also wide-open, showing what I think is the classic look from these lenses that I want to see. Odd scene with a bunch of umbrellas hanging out this car:

Bryan, that first one in particular has a very 3d look.

In medium format, I prefer rangefinders for wide and normal lenses, but slrs are terrific with longer lenses, and a Hasselblad is quite compact for a mf slr. My MF slr is a Fuji 680, and compact it isn't!

Corran
14-Jul-2021, 23:19
Yeah, it's funny but I just haven't gelled with any of the MF rangefinders I've tried and/or they have other issues that for me don't work out, despite loving my 35mm rangefinders. I also like the waist-level finder, and while there is the wide-angle Rolleiflexes, it's not a great option either ($$$). I kept coming back to the Hasselblad as a good all-rounder that is smaller than my Pentax 67, can (hopefully) be handheld a bit easier, and has a few other features that appeal to me like interchangeable backs. I will get a 40 or 50 sometime soon hopefully and have a simple 3-lens kit (came with 80/150). I've also considered putting my 38mm Schneider and Mercury 3d-printed camera in the bag as a scale-focus "SWC-esque" contraption with either the 6x7 or 6x9 back (or they make a custom 6x6 if I wanted to go full square) and forego the 40mm but on the other hand, a single camera solution is appealing. Just like any other system, nothing's perfect...

Interesting. The Boise area is where we moved from in 1999 when we came to Columbia, MO. Spent 19 years there.

Just returned yesterday from over a week in Idaho visiting family I haven't seen in decades and exploring around the Boise area. Here's the first photograph hot off the scanner.

P.S. I like this one best of the two.

One other image from this location using a bit of foreground interest. Glad I brought the Century instead of my Pentax 67 so I could use movements. This one was with a 65mm f/8 Super Angulon instead.

It’s hard to beat the Sawtooth’s for scenery. Nice tones in the mountain.

Thanks all for the comments and thoughts.

The Sawtooths were gorgeous. Didn't look like what I envisioned Idaho as. It was fun to visit Stanley a couple of times!

Austin do you use the Ortho on all of your photos you share with us? I somehow had the idea that Ortho would not work well for this type of photography, obviously I’m mistaken. :-)

Thank you. I used a Fuji GW690II (it has a fixed 90mm lens) and Ilford Ortho 80 film.

And I was surprised (by my stupidity, as always) on discovering an accidental Vivian Maier moment:

I dunno, this looks pretty nice. You seem to do better by accident than many do on purpose.

Thanks Philip and Steve.

I think the credit goes to nature and a quick Rule of Thirds default composition approach! :D

As an aside, I was able to fix that camera. I removed some of the splintered 3D-printed material and got the front standard to sit flush on that attachment point. Ended up not being all that bad damage-wise, other than cosmetic.

And, a fun shot of my car since the sun was out, finally. I recently passed 25,000 miles on this car. By my calculations, I've saved over 300 gallons of gas with the hybrid compared to my old Camry.

Both still with the 80, but w/ a yellow filter on the car, and dev'd in Pyrocat. I also wanted to see how bad the flare would be.

Insurance and car payment costs - are they less than the cost of those 300 gallons? How does the cost of electricity for charging actually compare to the cost of gasoline?

The car because you like it is nice. As an actual cost saving measure most of them fail. On not polluting - aren't you just shifting the location of the pollution source from your car to the electrical generating plants?

Hybrid. I think you've an axe to grind. I would be happy to explain to you some of the maths of hybrid or electric privately if you're interested (not an appropriate venue here and prob against the rules).

My nephew Reed, shot quickly after meeting for lunch with my wife's sister-in-law and her kids. He's very light-sensitive and on the spectrum, so kind of difficult to shoot, but I shot an image of his sister back about 7 years ago at the same age, so this turned out perfectly for them. I made an 11x14 SG print of that old photo, so I'll print this one for them for Christmas probably.

Same Hasselblad I've been shooting, on Delta 100:
