Takes a special will to surf in the Bay of Fundy, even in August when the water is a few degrees above freezing. Decent waves that day, too.

Andrew,
Thank you, that is very kind of you to say. To be honest, I frequently feel as if I'm at the end of my run, that my well has run dry, so to speak, but I'm stubborn, and have a kind of faith that I'm getting somewhere, so I stagger on.
I find the area of Eastern Washington where these recent pictures were taken (the "Palouse") is photographically stimulating. It feels vital to me, personal somehow. I'm hoping to take the best of these pictures (I've visited the last five years) and turn them into a book.
Thank you again.
Best, Austin

Thanks, yes, I think so too. Shooting handhold with a rangefinder, I often get some tilt in the picture without noticing and keep it. But it's different when I look on a gridded focus matte with one of my waist level finder cameras.

Today we had the barest dusting of snow/sleet here (after torrential rain and flooding yesterday!). There's hope yet for a bit of snow sticking before the end of winter.

Ask and you shall receive - we got an unexpected 4+ inches today. But all roads were impassable and a lot of cars were abandoned due to people trying to drive (we don't have proper snow management here in the south!) so I had to accept just shooting in my backyard.

You really capitalized on that snow fall this winter. You've nailed some good shots. I think fog also transforms the familiar. I like how you can often isolate things without a noisy background.

Bryan, I bet snow it's probably big change in your photographic diet? I did manage take a few pictures during last year's snow fall. But, man, under heavy overcast conditions, the snow and light is so flat and scattered that it's a challenge to find something interesting. But I did find out I definitely need more practice to find a better exposure and development for such flat, textureless conditions. When it snows and everyone is avoiding the roads is when it's great to be out looking for pictures when you have a vehicle usable in those conditions.

Indeed, and this snow was accompanied by exactly that kind of flat lighting except for about 5 minutes the next morning when I saw the clouds open up briefly. I wasn't out photographing though. We definitely do not have a vehicle capable of safely traveling in that kind of snowfall so alas, I had to forgo going to a better landscape area.
I would've liked to go on the Appalachian Trail or elsewhere, maybe up to one of our waterfalls. I saw some nice photos online from folks that must have an ATV and live near some of those locales and it looked awesome. It's all melted now for the most part.

Tuco,
In our Northwest cloudy winter deep-gloom. I have had some success by taking an incident-light meter reading, opening up 3 stops, and developing my normal time. it works by increasing contrast--which is absent on our darkest cloudy days, I haven't tried this in snow when the clouds are thick.
Keith

Okay, thanks for the tip.
I have different approaches to working in the snow and exposure doesn't have much to do with it.
In sun, you can have three dimension changed into two by a photo. Things like light and shadows provide evidence of perspective and depth. You can have texture if you want, modeling on trees and surfaces. In overcast, tones and shapes must be provided by the objects in the photo, not the type/distribution of light. Perspective translates directly from a one-eyeball-look-at-the-scene to film. No modeling of shapes or surfaces. Texture is provided by tones of objects in the scene rather than shapes lit strangely by light. In either case, snow can provide modeling, background separation, etc..
Gray day example of above explanation.

Yeah it can be too slow or too fast when you only have 1-stop shutter speeds options on your camera. I wish medium format cameras were made with half-stop shutter speeds. I'd be using them a lot. Also focal length and distance to subject are other variables I found out too.
When I went back with my M7II and tried it with a 65mm (didn't have a normal lens) using the same shutter speed, there wasn't enough blur. That was because I setup at about the same comfortable distance away from the personal space of the person in the chair and with the wider FOV it made relative walking speed slower.

Thanks Peter. I get more time to look around on a foggy day compared to a sunrise/set twilight situation. Hiking from one place to another looking for something of interest can be 30+ minutes apart.

9x12cm Foma Retro 320 cut film, exposed at EI 125. Plaubel Makiflex Standard camera body, Kern-Arau 360mm F11 Repro Process lens, exposure 1/15 sec at F22, Developed in straight Microdol-X developer, 30 minutes development at 18C, in a JOBO Multitank 5. Scanned on Epson 4490 scanner.
The negative is cropped somewhat (about 6.5cmx9cm) for easy scanning. Observations: Even at 30 minutes development, the negatives are quite low contrast. Also, there is a dark blue antihalation dye on the back of the film, which turned my Microdol-X BLUE! And it even turned my Kodak Rapid Fixer BLUE! After thirty minutes washing, all traces of the dye was completely rinsed away.
I like this film! I am glad I have it. Of course, I am not following the FOMA instructions, just going by my own intuition.
Since this film (at the time) was not available in 120 size, this is a good alternative

First print from my annual winter trip to Eastern Washington, this at the Peshastin Pinnacles St. Park. TriX, 80mm lens with red filter, scanned from print. I was hoping to get around to the right more, as the formation would have looked like a rodent skull. As it is, it just documents that I sweated up the hill, enjoying a sunny day.

Thanks tuco. Lots of Live Oak with Spanish moss where I live in north Florida.
I have not used Rollei 80S or RPX 25, and thank you for the heads-up about the curling.
I wonder if the combination of freezer storage, then air drying with an opened window nearby had something to do with it. Two days in a Print File page and still curling.
Kind regards,

I want a flatter file for post processing
Darr, great work with the live oak--and I very much enjoyed you talking about your workflow on the "Zone" thread. A question: I notice you're using Pyrocat HD negatives...what does your initial histogram look like? The reason I ask is that my initial foray into DSLR scanning using a light pad as a light source leaves me with a very narrow "spike" in the midtones, but nothing approaching what I would consider a reasonable curve. Using "Auto Contrast" in PS gives me a bit more to work with of course, but not enough to use the luminosity masks I'm used to using on with a purely digital capture.
Any thoughts on how I might negotiate this bottleneck? :)

CB,
I digitize my negatives using three bracketed exposures, +2, 0, -2, and I work from there.
With a lot of negatives the "0" or normal exposure does well, with others I may need to do a blend of 2 or 3 negatives to get to where I want to be.
Kind of like using a different type of internegative approach.
If the composition is there, I stay with it, but I do walk away every once in a while and learn from the process.
I know within the first hour of post processing if my metering + development was correct or not.
I still make mistakes, but I still wake up every morning grateful for the creative process in my life.
Here is a recent developing mistake when the film was wound on the reel wrong.
I loved the composition and ended up using a couple of layered textures to save it.
Gotta have stuff for my photo blog and I still believe in possibilities. :)
Best to you,
Darr

Excellent, very helpful--I've been bracketing as well, but mainly to find the "ETTR" frame...looks as if a bit of blending would help. Otherwise, it's good to know that ~23MP suits you--since I'm invested in Pentax, the heavily discounted K3ii with pixel shift might help me stay in touch with my inner Scotsman as I explore this side of the street.:)

There's a lot going on in that photo!
Yeah I was leaving the park (after paying $16 to come in and discovering the entire beach was cleared of driftwood and had construction equipment all over it mitigating erosion and all of the parking lots flooded) on a one-way road and slammed my brakes when I saw this swamp. Pulled to the side of the road and pissed some lady off in a Mercedes (lol) who had to go off the road to get around me so I could grab this shot.

from a Pentax 67 negative
Ah, I'm digging this one as well. A question: assuming you were locked in to an "N" development for a 10-frame roll of 120, did you alter your exposure knowing you were going to go "high key," or does your normal developer give you that much latitude with the print?
I was using an oddball roll of Foma 400 film I had, so already kind of off-the-cuff in terms of exposure/development. I think I shot it a couple stops over and developed per normal instructions. The fog made things flat so this print was with a #5 filter. All things are possible with multigrade :). Definitely not my best negative or anything but it worked.

That's a neat image! I'd like to try photographing lightning, but have never really gotten the chance. Do you leave the shutter open, on bulb, and wait or did you "just get lucky?"

Thank you. This was made on night patrol while serving in the Army as battalion photographer in Thailand. Camera was a 6x6 Minolta Autocord, hand-held. Fair to say, luck played a role!
John, your old truck reminds me of Dave's Rescue Trucks in Sprague, WA. If you're ever heading to the Spokane area, check it out if you haven't already.

Thanks. Was about a 15 minute exposure. Was able to take 4 images while I was there. Camera at the end of a monopod suspended over the stream. Framing was done completely by guessing... composition in the other 3 exposures terrible, was very lucky just to get this one exposure.

Almost wanted to start a new thread, but these are all medium format, taken with my Rollei 6006 and 80mm lens, HP5+ developed in Pyrocat. Straight scans from 8x10 work prints, no manipulations (essentially enlarged contact prints).
Someone had suggested we document the impacts of the Coronavirus on our communities. We in NJ are practicing social distancing, but still allowed out of our homes. While I thought of using my 4x5, the Rollei seemed more appropriate in terms of my getting out of the way if people were walking by, and in general minimizing the time I would be out photographing, The problem is that simply photographing empty streets wouldn't reflect the impact of regulations, but on an exercise walk I noticed all the police tape and occasional signs that were put up closing playgrounds and fields where people would otherwise congregate. These 3 seemed to me to be the most interesting of the images so far.

Comments on composition or ideas on documenting the impact of the virus on our communities welcome, please remember these are unmanipulated enlarged contacts.
... remember these are unmanipulated enlarged contacts.
I like them. I haven't seen anything like that yet.
I dunno. I'd say converting a film print or negative to a digital image entails manipulating the contrast curve and in the case of color image setting the color balance. It can be done automagically with scanning software or it can be done by a human in an image editor. When I click on the auto adjust on my scanning software, often I go no way. I placed that white object at zone 8 and confirmed on my densitometer at a density of 1.25 ish for a diffusion enlarger. But the software placed it at R=G=B=230+ and that is way too bright so I adjust it down and manipulated the image.
I took a few 4x5's last weekend on the same theme, but have been having challenges with developing. One of the sheets might be salvageable, if so I'll scan it and put it here.
Nice shots! I have a 6008i myself, great system.

Hi, Peter. I commend your effort. I think your first image starts getting somewhere that the other two do not. You create a relationship between the sign, which grabs our attention first, and the out-of-focus slide. The fact that the sign obscures the duck's face adds to the impression, and the alignment of the foreground tape, duck, slide and dark vertical tree draws the elements together. If you are familiar with W. Eugene Smith's Minimata photographs, you may recall the one of the fish wrapped in newspaper in the foreground with an out-of-focus home in the background. It works as a metaphor for the entire theme of the essay. Your first image starts to get at that. Shaping the composition during enlargement can bring the idea forward more clearly.
The other two do not show that potential to me; to my eye, the compositions (more the second than the third) are searching for a unifying idea.

Tuco, 6x6, Alan, Philip: Thanks for your comments.
Tuco: Thanks for the PhotoShop/scanning suggestions, these seemed close enough without adjusting for posting, if I make real darkroom prints (probably will) I will pay more attention to contrast, burns and dodges.
Philip: Particular thanks for the time you took to provide constructive critique. I also like the first image best. I actually took that image twice, changing aperture so that one would have max depth of field, and the other reduced DOF. The one I posted, with reduced DOF, was the one I preferred too. I might have tried some other points of view, but the ground was a mix of mud and puddles, so I felt restricted (I know a true artist wouldn't have cared, what can I say?) As for the other two, the Dodge Field image is the most documentary (i.e. least visually interesting compositionally) but I rather like the second due to all the verticals; if I print that for real, I will tone down the contrast and do some dodging of the darkest areas.
