Thanks, Corran and chassis. I haven't burnt in the sky at all; Delta 400 seems to respond strongly to a red or orange filter, and the sky was an intense blue with clouds scudding across. It's an interesting film, and I'd like to try it in 4x5, but I guess that's unlikely to happen.

Corran
11-Feb-2017, 09:44
Wow, I am amazed, but that may be due to my experiences with the sky here and red filters. I've never shot D400 though. If it is indeed a property of that film I should try some.

11-Feb-2017, 10:43
Thanks, Pali and tuco.

I'm also surprised at the way the sky comes out, but I think it works well in this context; elsewhere, it might well be OTT. There is a window of about two months in this area, after the rainy season, when the dunes have these lakes and pools of water - it's normally during June / July. We're definitely going to go back - and I'll be aiming to have a 4x5 camera with me - but may not be able to do so this year.

Excellent dunes! the tones through out the image work well. and the balance of forms and the framing of the curves is excellent! Bring a smile to my face and just the motivation I need to go chase some clouds myself!

Austin: Just wow! Your "Clearing Storm" is simply spectacular! For this one I'm interested not so much in the "photographic technical stuff" but simply where you were standing to get such a great view, the time of day, whether this was a planned shot or simply being in the right place at the right time, stuff like that (I guess that's what is called the "back story.").

austin granger
18-Feb-2017, 13:47
Thanks Peter. I'm not sure how much of the back story I can remember. While the picture of the cypress and water tanks was made last weekend, the "Clearing Storm" photo goes back fifteen years! I can tell you that this is one of my favorite places in the world, and one of my favorite hikes. I've stood in this spot at the cliff's edge innumerable times, and made a lot of photographs of this same scene. Judging from the light, this one was taken mid-morning. There had been a big storm the day and night before, and here it was just starting to clear. The clouds were dramatic and fast moving and the shadows were changing every moment. I have a contact sheet from this day (it was in January of 2002) and I must have made nearly 20 photographs in a row, which is a tremendous amount for me. Even if a subject really excites me, I still usually make only two or three frames. You mentioned not being so interested in the technical stuff, but I can't help but remember that I was using a Pentax 67 with a wide-angle 45mm lens and Kodak Tech-pan film. I remember this because the Pentax was my first "serious" camera and it was around this point that I really began committing myself to photography, going out every chance I could. 2002 was also when I bought my first view camera. It seems like a million years ago now. It was an odd experience returning to Point Reyes last weekend. It had been a long time. It wasn't a bad experience, but it did make me feel a bit wistful; how small we are! How brief our lives, compared to the time-scale of the larger universe. Here I was, standing in the same spot, looking at the same scene, but now no longer 31 but 46! Living in Portland with a teenager and two 11 year olds! You get the idea... Though not nearly so dramatic as the changes in me, I did find some changes in the landscape. Here is a picture I took with my phone, of a portion of the path that had collapsed. California is an active place.

Here's one I didn't think was that remarkable till I put it up on flickr and it got 12 faves overnight, which well above average for me. The subject material is pretty mediocre woods, the snow's not pretty, the trees are not pretty, the photo came out a little busier than I expected. Maybe the unexpected busy-ness of the lines is a draw. Feedback of any sort welcome.

I was concerned that the meter in my Rolleiflex wasn't right, so I used up a film with duplicate exposures, one using the internal meter and one using an external spotmeter. It turns out I was right, and the internal meter underexposes by 1-2 stops, but the funny thing is that the underexposed negatives allow me to pull out more detail in scans. This might be a quirk of the XP2 I was using. Anyway, one of the 'underexposed' negatives:

When I discovered that XP2 could be processed in B&W chemicals (I still get people who assure me this isn't possible) with very fine grain I bought an awful lot of it for the freezer. I have recently begun to experiment with abusing it in the ways that standard silver halide films can be pushed and pulled, just to see if it stands up to it. So for a starting point I exposed a roll at EI 200, and cut the processing time in half, and wandered about the house taking photos of the relatively dark interior with a bright window in the frame. I just wanted to see if I could get a reasonable image in both areas. This is the kind of thing I got:

https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3816/32597313634_1062234b73_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/REvKES)
Experiments in Pull Processing 1 (https://flic.kr/p/REvKES) by chrism229 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/chrism229/), on Flickr

On scanning this negative the histogram was showing it 1-2 stops underexposed, so I should try again at EI 100, or maybe just a bit longer in the developer. The other thing I'd like to do is find out of pushing it is possible without excessive grain. I know that XP2 goes very grainy in Diafine and in Qualls' monobath and I suspect I'll find I can get one stop but probably not two extra out of it before it gets too crunchy, but you don't know unless you try!

Chrism, in your wandering around the house and film experiments, include some pictures your other "casual" audiophile gear. This sure looks like a turntable, but the two record cleaning brush/sponges would normally be found next to a record cleaning machine, which then wouldn't have a tone arm. Puzzling! (You are probably aware that hidden among us photo types, there are also a bunch of music lovers ...)

Peter,
I thought it might confuse people! It's a Loricraft (http://www.loricraft.com/prc2.html) record cleaning machine. I'd previously used a Nitty Gritty and a VPI, but this beats them hollow. A lot of old vinyl can sound like new after the crud is removed. Other stuff? Well....

Hi Chris,

Just curious, have you tried C-41? How were the results? Nice audio hardware BTW.

On XP2? Yes, a couple of times I've thrown a roll in with some colour film if I had one of the latter to process. That gives incredibly smooth results, to the point that many B&W film shooters don't like it:
https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2904/14493656510_93b54e7d26_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/o5KM8u)
Tea (https://flic.kr/p/o5KM8u) by chrism229 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/chrism229/), on Flickr

But to have just a little grain is nice, and to be able to develop the film quickly and cheaply with B&W chemicals is also an advantage. I'm not claiming it's for everyone, but since I happen to have a lot of it I might as well explore what it can be made to do.

I thought I'd try increasing development time of XP2 in HC-110 to shift the histograms of my scans towards the middle. This is ten minutes in 1+49 rather than the usual eight.

The little Downy Woodpecker has a very regular sort of mind:

As vaguely promised a week or two ago, I have continued to abuse XP2. Today's effort was to expose it at 1600 and guess the development time, and since yesterday, I used 10 minutes for ISO400, I used the rule of thumb that a 1/3 increase in time compensates for 1 stop of underexposure, and developed this for 18 minutes in 1+49 HC-110. I am amazed at the lack of grain!

I have several rolls of 35mm XP2 that I have avoided shooting just because I figured it would sit unprocessed for a very long time after running thru my camera. Thanks for doing this chrism. Since I don't use HC-110 anymore, I wonder how the film would respond in Rodinal...? Any thoughts on a starting point (ISO, dilution, agitation)?

Randy,
I have used XP2 @200 and done a semi-stand development in 1+100 Blazinal, with six inversions at the start and at 30 minutes. Doing it at ISO400 gave a little grain.
There's an example here (https://flic.kr/p/kCEi8s) (not MF, so I won't post the picture).

Well I went and did it. XP2 Super at 3200, developed in HC-110 1+49 for 24 minutes. No grain!

If you click on the link there's a 4096x4096 85% JPEG. Click on that to see at 100%. All this effort to make a file that could have come out of the Monochrom!

My suggestions for times are:
EI 100 4 minutes (not tested yet)
EI 200 6.5 minutes (worked at 4 minutes, but images a bit dark, so more development advised)
EI 400 10 minutes (works)
EI 800 13.5 minutes (not tested yet)
EI 1600 18 minutes (works)
EI 3200 24 minutes (works)

Assuming 1+49, 20ēC, etc.
I'm exposing a 35mm XP2 at 3200 at present, and if I finish it tomorrow we'll see how that turns out. I never thought I'd push a film three stops and see no grain. Makes me giddy.

I've just hung up the 35mm XP2 to dry, and I see a problem. The same thing happened with the 120 film - some of the frames are very thin and are probably unusable. When it happened with the 120 film, I assumed that since some were fine, and some were thin, that perhaps the shutter in my ancient Sonnar 150/4 wasn't working at some speeds (they were taken on a tripod at speeds like 1/8 and 1/4 which I probably hadn't used before). But this 35mm film has just come out of an F6 which hasn't had any problems at all and it's showing the same thing. Is it possible that the film has a threshold below which it won't register much of anything? There were no problems with the films going on the Hewes reels and no indication that the film had been in contact with itself or anything of that sort.
So if it's going to be hit or miss I can't recommend 3200. When it's dry, I'll scan and show any decent ones simply to assess any graininess in the smaller format, but in future I'll limit myself to 1600 which didn't have that problem at all.

I think I've come to the end of my experiments, with ISO 800 now completed. It seems it's easy to pull XP2, and to push to 800 and 1600. 3200 is hit and miss as being a half-stop out in the exposure ruins the picture. Here's an example of ISO 800, using HC-110 1+49, for 13.5 minutes:

Austin, absolutely love the triangle abstract!!

So last night I found a roll of film in one of my backpacks - I had no idea what was on it. I discovered it was from a protest here in Dahlonega over a month ago over this (http://www.wsbtv.com/news/local/large-kkk-sign-placed-on-historic-dahlonega-building/494862898). I was very glad to find it as I had completely forgotten about it as I had left on a business trip a bit after I shot it.

Here are two images I shot that evening - both with my Pentax 67ii, an adapted 15cm f/4.5 APO Lanthar, on Plus-X and dev'd in Acufine:

Hi!
Agree !! I usually shot my Pacemaker + Optar 135 handheld!! Well, when I use the Grafmatic.
One question. I thought that the rangefinder should be calibrated for each lens ... shouldn't it?

Thank you!

Antonio, early Pacemakers had a side rangefinder that would only work with the lens for which it was adjusted. Later models with a top rangefinder used interchangeable cams that worked with any lens for which the photographer had the correct cam.

Hi,

I took 2 lenses for testing, having noted in home the adjusting parameters. The rangefinder internal calibration was ok for both lens adjustments.

Answering to your question, yes, it should. It's a time consuming procedure, I prefer stay with one lens for weeks, and if necessary change the lens and adjust the rangefinder again, to use the camera for some time again. One time adjusted, it just stay fixed - if you have a correctly maintained one - for long time without the need to re-adjust it.
I'll try to get a model with interchangeable cams - as Jim noted above - if I find the need for more frequent lens swapping,
I find a very capable model the Mini Speed Graphic, it's small, solid construction - not rock solid as a Linhof would be - and the focal plane shutter is a considerable plus,

Cheers,

Renato

Q - How did you achieve such a pale skin effect ?

Was it make-up or a cunning use of lighting and film ?

Thanks

She was pretty pale to begin with...and with good makeup (she's a MUA turned model). I had her in a black peacoat, flagged off the light off the background and threw my black coat over the table. Everything was black to help her pale skin stand out more. The socked beauty dish was just out of frame...it adds a really nice glow to the skin, too. No fill was used. Then overexposed/underdeveloped. So it wasn't an effect, it was several things combined.

Thanks, all!

Since I used the divided pyrocat I developed both the Hp5 and Pan F in the same tank. I rated both at box speed but had to push some during scanning as the divided cat always seems to cost me at least a stop.

Had some light leak problems on and off all day though.

First off, there's actually a "color" specific thread a few threads down, just FYI. Secondly, yes I think they are unnaturally saturated and really grainy from your processing. And not heavy saturation from the film but pushed that way in PS.

Good guess, but not from processing.

This is Kodak PMC film which has unusual saturation, and I intentionally underexposed which will intensify grain among other things. The response really didn't answer my question, but I'll move my stuff, sorry for posting in the wrong thread.

Funny you mention that, I have one random roll of PMC sitting here. I was wondering what it was. The scan may be enhancing the grain too (grain aliasing). I guess the PP is dependent on the look you want to go for.

Funny you mention that, I have one random roll of PMC sitting here. I was wondering what it was. The scan may be enhancing the grain too (grain aliasing). I guess the PP is dependent on the look you want to go for.
It's an interesting film. Some people say it stands for Poor Man's Color. My own belief is that they were trying to make a transparency looking film into C-41 convenience. It has less latitude like a slide film and prefers slight under-exposure.

Some people call it clown colors, like a crazy version of Ektar. Maybe it was to compete with Fuji Velvia for super saturated color. I embrace the pastel look & the over-saturated look equally. Just depends on what I'm in the mood for.

Another from yesterday's Appalachian-themed festival. Rolleicord 1 (Art Deco), 7.5cm f/4.5 Triotar wide-open, Foma 100, XTOL 1:2 for 9 minutes:

http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/bearsquare-6854ss.jpg

This was a roll of Foma 100 a rep from Freestyle gave me a few weeks ago. We were talking about Foma and I mentioned I couldn't stand how it had a blue base and curled like crazy. He said it had been reformulated - and this roll looks great, and dried flat as a board. Might have to buy some more.

I still have 3 guitars at my parent's place and I can't play a lick :). I'll stick to playing in orchestras...

The Foma film I shot actually has "Ultra 100" on the film rebate, so I am guessing Freestyle is selling it as their Arista EDU Ultra 100 film. I am pleasantly surprised and will be ordering a few boxes of that to try out and double-check that it is as good as this Foma stuff. Might be nice to have some cheaper or just different 100-speed film on hand.

Here's one other from the roll, just a landscape at a local river boat launch. Wanted to try it in contrasty, late afternoon sidelight.

I wish Arista would better define their offerings. They've had hit & miss films over the years. A test run with a step wedge & densitometer never lies, but that doesn't help during the ordering process.

My cheap film has been Shanghai GP3 (100). I expose at 200, bringing highlights down into a more detailed part of the film at the expense of shadow detail. In doing so, I don't need to push the contrast as much and preserve more tonal range in the process.

One film I've been very impressed with for the money is Kentmere 100. I wish they made that in the 120 format.

Here's an example of the Shanghai shot at dusk in the above described manner on my Fuji 645zi "pocket" camera. Processed in D-76 1:1 (I usually use Xtol 1:1). I used a yellow filter, the result was a bit overkill with the setting sun already throwing dark yellow light & causing heavy shadows. I'll see what else I can dig up with the Shanghai and post it.

... That's alot of detail & tone for pushing a stop.

Per Kodak's Data Sheet (http://imaging.kodakalaris.com/sites/prod/files/files/products/f4017_TriX.pdf), 400TX is recommended for push processing. And they say because of its wide exposure latitude you can expose at EI 800 and develop normally without pushing for just one-stop. But I assume they mean using a box-speed developer too.

The Pentax spot meter was showing 8 for some mossy areas. Putting the moss on Zone III, I gave around 5 - 10 sec exposures. I didn't write them down because it was starting to rain. The Rollei film tended toward overexposure, so my mossy readings badly under-measured the infrared contribution from the shadows. That's not surprising. Also, I was bracketing exposures to the long side considering the recommended reciprocity corrections, and I think that didn't help (1/2 stop at 2 sec and 1 stop at 8 sec). I got these prints from the least exposed of each location.

High humidity & heat causing the gelatin to swell & making backing paper fibres get stuck to the film? Write to Ilford's QC dept. & see what they say - they'll also likely replace your film.

I had the exact same issue with a few rolls of PanF 50. All purchased thru B&H with batch number 31APN1C01/02 July 2018. I have a few rolls of a more recent batch, but I have yet to shoot them. Not sure if the problem is still happening.
