Ive read enough Weston books to know that he was known for his great coffee. In discussion today I mentioned this but I coundn't remember that name of the strange contraption he used to brew his coffee.

Anyone remember?

Maybe if I drank the same coffee, I would be a better photographer.

Dunno. I eat a lot of pea soup, just as he did, and I have yet to see much improvement in my own photography.

For starters he had a hand grinder for the beans. The pot had an elegant long spout and the method was drip. The filter had a chamois appearance and was reused. This is from memory as a very young lad, long before I had any interest in a cup of coffee.

It was called a Kin-Hee made by Hekin Co., Ohio. (described on p. 12-13, California and the West, Charis Wilson, 1978 Aperture edition). I just finished reading this book and recommend it esp. if you are from California.

I just can't remember what that thing was called. It was such a strange device to me when I saw one. I don't care how he made his coffee, or what kind of beans, or the procedure he used, I only want to know what that coffee maker was called.

Yes, Yes ... But which brand of coffee did he drink ?

- and did it give those deep, rich brown tones, for which he is famous ?

Here is a link to a page that has a scan of a Kin=Hee coffee maker ad. The text is amusing.

There are still similar coffee makers like this one in production today.

Sure thing, this is one of he most obscure pieces of photographic lore I ever read. I'm surprised not only that one asked the question, but even more than one actually had an answer. It's great to be part of such a fine bunch of geeks. ;-)

sorry for such an obscure off the wall question. Its just one of those things that you remember reading somewhere and can't recall it later or its on the tip of your tongue. I knew that there had to be atleast one other EW geek that would know.

Just to take it further, look at the photographs of Beaumont Newhall. He and his wife were good friends of the Westons, and BN made number of photographs of the Wildcat Hill house, including kitchen views. Some of which are published in a book called "In Plain Sight", and others in his autobiography.

I'll have to try that coffee pot. This is Efke PL100 in some old Nescafe instant that was sitting in the back of a drawer, and it just doesn't have that rich mountain grown flavor of a Weston.

David, that nescafe has left horrible streaking on your negative, you may want to try a different brand.

Actually that's the scanner--can't handle the base fog density.
