This is a wet plate collodion experiment.
So two exposures on the same plate.
It needs very accurate measuring but I am happy with the result.

26,5 x 26,5 cm tintype
Dallmeyer 3a wide open (f4)
exposure times 2 x 3 seconds.

Thanks!. Yep the alignment is the most difficult part. Than the exposure.
This was a third attempt although the first one was also very close.

I was sorry to see October's thread end because every time I opened the thread I saw your wonderful portrait of Erwin Olaf at the beginning. That was great! Now this. November is starting out with an excellent example as well.

Not nearly in the class of Alex, but hey...

Jacob Haugaard is one of the most known and beloved intertainers in Denmark...
Google him and you'll find loads of images of him, acting silly in VERY colorful clothes...

I opted for a serious portrait...

not there yet, but time is on my side..

Agree both are amazing.

The eye one is awesome, my first thought is to use a dry erase marker and outline the glass where the eye was?

This is a portrait of a friend and fellow portuguese LF photographer next to his very nice MPP. Being the first photo I took with Reinhold's meniscus lens I wanted to post the result as I am actually quite pleased with the outcome.

This is really beautiful :)

Wow f/2.5 I wasn't aware they even made a lens that wide in LF haha shows how little I know.

I see some bubbling? Above the girls body, is that the film emulsion?

How did you keep this usable being so old? I've exposed film older, but never quite as well as this I think.

Well they didn't make it for LF, this is a projection lens. :)

There's bubbling and fogging and scratches and all kinds of artifacts on this film.

I expose it for ISO 25 (it used to be ISO 400 back in '73) and develop it with Diafine. The film comes out foggy and dark but scans good enough. Doesn't print that easy, though.

What emulsion issues? I am currently using 4x5 Arista.EDU Ultra 100 which I believe is rebadged FOMA100. I have not noticed anything wrong. What should I look for?

The only thing I do not like about the Arista is there are no interleaving sheets of paper to prevent the film from scratching itself. Well, that and the terrible reciprocity issue with 1 second exposures or longer. But the price is reasonable and domestic shipping in the US gets it to me in a couple days.

I tried Shanghai 100 and like it. But it takes f.o.r.e.v.e.r to get here from China. I wish I could get it in the US at a similar price. Does anyone know if I can?

Foma 100, I don't use acid stop and I don't use acid fix.............never had a problem. Wear gloves and remember that the emulsion is very soft. A quick rinse in de-ionised (or distilled) water after the final wash and hang it up to dry. Brilliant stuff!

I had terrible spotting of some sort with both 4X5 EDU 100 and 120 size. Any images with sky in them were pretty much worthless due to the small round spots. I have not had that problem with any other films, and have read of others having similar problems with EDU. Must not be consistent if you are not having the same problems.

Same here, just areas where there are just missing emulsion, and the stuff I used was 4x5. And the reciprocity is horrid. But the emulsion issues bugged me most. I'll have to find one to show you what I mean. Just imagine you grabbed the emulsion and ripped a piece if it off...

I agree the tones are nice.

I'm no expert, but a few comments if I may.

The light seems to be coming from the right side heading towards the left side of the frame, so I would've considered facing hurt toward the light, it would highlight her face more and give her less dark spots, but not only that it would also highlight the belly, and give a nice overall shape and radiated of the belly which would be nice considering that's the main subject matter.

I would also consider having her standing, or leaning against the chair perhaps, but more portly bring her shoulders up so that she wasn't slumped over, because she's pregnant there's already sort of an unusual shape to her body, so buy something over it doesn't quite work, if she were more shoulders back it would bring her belly out more again accentuating the belly which is of course the subject matter.

You should have her over again before too late, and try these things out maybe?

Still the overall exposure and details are really nice, the chair and the window and the diffused light on the curtains are all really nice. I like the setting, and I really love that chair I love wicker I think that's quicker I can't quite tell I'm looking at it on my phone but it appears to be one of those wicker chairs with holes in it which I really think is nice.

Good job! My first upload wasn't as good as this that's for sure ;)

Full respect for your advise and vision. Make a traditional belly shot wasn`t my goal this time :) In fact, the light on her face is little poor and mayby i should us some kind of reflector to fix it.
Honestly , i`m wondering now about one change in this image and put Beti`s husband on the chair...

Shanghai has interleaving paper. I just loaded a dozen holders so I know for sure.

Back when I used only Tri-X in the '70s, it had paper but I don't know about today's Kodak films.

Finally, I believe Ilford HP5+ has interleaving paper sheets.

Pete,

That surprises me. I just ran 16 sheets of EDU 100 through D76 1:1, did not wear gloves, used Kodak Indicator Stop and Kodak Hardening Fixer with no issues at all. (However, I did use a water rinse after developing and before the stop bath.)

I always use a steam distilled water + PhotoFlo final bath.

Do you tray develop? That may be why you say to use gloves, I would too. I use Kodak #4A stainless steel sheet film racks. I can process up to a dozen at a time in 108 ounce plastic tubs from Dollar Tree. If I have more than 12 sheets, I split the job to make multiple runs.

Terry,
I use a Patterson Orbital system with D-76H and home brewed TF3 fixer. I'm prone to dermititus and as D-76H contains Metol it's the sensible thing for me to do. It's just a totally unproven decision that I made but look up Metol and it ain't nice.

FOMA100 (arista EDU version), Acros100, FP4+, HP5+, Velvia50, Provia100f, and Portra400 all in sheet and none have had a paper separator.

Forgive my ignorance though obviously I haven't tried them all yet :)

Wow Scott... This one is really good. I try not to use Petzvals when photographing more than one subject because I can never get both in focus. You did great here. I love the way your kid is blurred. I would normally consider that a mistake but it works fantastically here. The framing is also great and the way she is not looking at the camera.

Yes! It was a right pain in the bum to load it! Sheets everywhere...

Actually, no.

Here is what I do (total darkness, of course):
1. unpack the film
2. put the box bottom lid into the top lid
3. turn the lid set so one narrow end is facing you
4. place the stack of film + interleaving papers in the box so the no-notch narrow end is down against the long side
5. move the stack of film to the end of the box near you so the notch ends are sticking up
6. remove the top sheet of protective paper
7. rotate the paper 1/4 turn
8. slide it into the box under the stack of film
9. remove the sheet of film and insert it into a sheet film holder
10. rinse & repeat starting with #6
11. when all the film holders are loaded either remove the stack of papers from the box and set them aside or place them under the last sheet of film or place them on the counter to discard
12. return the stack of film + paper to the protective envelopes
13. reassemble the box
14. turn on the lights

No sheets of paper everywhere.

A variation of this would be to not nest the box halves but to use one as a container in which to place the papers. Still, no mess.

Yes! It was a right pain in the bum to load it! Sheets everywhere...

I was on a bicycle for 5 months in New Zealand with my 4x5. Lots of rain, but beautiful. Upon my return home, I wished that my film had come with sheets of paper between each piece of film. From all the rain and the bumpy roads (miles of gravel back then), the sheets of film (TMax100) slid back and forth in the boxes...creating high humidity static discharges (spots instead of streaks). Ruined quite a few negatives, much spotting on the prints on some other images. Paper in between might have prevented it (as would have padding the inside of the box of film a bit more so the film did not move as much.) Ahhh...hindsight!

Thanks, everyone! FWIW, the boy is almost 14 now, and growing up too fast. I generally haven't used a Petzval on more than a single subject, because it's been very rare for me to shoot more than a single subject at a time. I had this image visualized, though, and the rendering of the lens is what I was hoping for. Rare that that happens. Braedan is out of focus due to the Petzval - he's very adept at holding still. It was actually funny - the whole time, he was whispering, "you're moving - you're still moving." I think she did well for her first LF pose.

Thanks again for your comments.

Vaughn

That is certainly worth knowing!

Actually, no.

No sheets of paper everywhere.

Haha I was being a bit over dramatic! When I was loading the Shanghai it was my first ever brand new box of film and I was not expecting all these extra sheets! I got a bit confused in the dark

Thanks for the detailed step-by-step, it's pretty much the method I use.

This weekend I was thinking about what a "portrait" is. Is it just a photograph of a person? Could a portrait be a written description of a person or thing? Could it be an image of an inanimate object? So I looked up the definition of portrait:

"por·trait
ˈpôrtrət,-ˌtrāt/Submit
noun
noun: portrait; plural noun: portraits; modifier noun: portrait
1. a painting, drawing, photograph, or engraving of a person, esp. one depicting only the face or head and shoulders.
synonyms: painting, picture, drawing, sketch, likeness, image, study, miniature;

More
a representation or impression of someone or something in language or on film.
"the writer builds up a full and fascinating portrait of a community"

synonyms: description, portrayal, representation, depiction, impression, account; More

This got me thinking, could I make a portrait of an object and words? So of course I had to try. Out came the Deardorff and a variety of lenses. I used a very simple set-up of window light and a low power flashlight to "paint" areas that I wanted to highlight. Then I decided that I wanted to use the contrast of Harman Direct Positive paper to give feature to details in darkness and light. And this happened...

The definition here refers to film as in movie I understand. The example makes me think so at least. I don't know much English though.
I personally think it is not a portrait at all, but the second image makes a really wonderful still life. I love narrow depth of field with printed text. The light is great too.

I'm pretty sure that would be defined as a still life, at least in terms of photography, however if you wanted to play the border and kind of think outside the box but still along the lines of a portrait I would go with something more like this...

*Warning this is 70mm, not quite large format but at 15 FEET per roll, it's quite large if you process it yourself...*

Only posting this as an example of an outside of the box portrait, not to show my work, as I know this is not large-format, hope that's okay.

I'm not much for classification and categorization, but in general terms I would consider a photograph where a person is the main subject a portrait and one where an arranged object is the main subject a still life. That doesn't mean you can't redefine the terms however you want, but in a place like this where there is a 'Portraits' thread and a 'Still Life' thread, bowing to those conventions keeps things from getting confusing. Personally, I'd be fine with one giant "Large Format Photographs" thread and leaving it at that. It wouldn't kill me to see trees and portraits and still lifes and water and leaves and landscapes all mixed together. In fact it might lead to some interesting visual juxtapositions.

Robert,

In order to have control over how large an image appears you need to upload it elsewhere on the Web and link to it in your post. (Many people use Flickr for this, but there are many other options.) Because LFPF is a free site, my assumption is the images uploaded to its own servers are restricted in size to save server space.

Whichever online hosting service you choose to use, make sure to check out their terms of service (TOS). You may find that most (all?) of them claim ownership of any image you upload, and the right to use or sell that image any way they see fit. That's why I'm still uploading small images to lfpf, and not complaining about the thumbnail.

1st definition: An abbreviation of 'radical'--a term made popular by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Still primarily used by people on the West Coast who find words like 'cool', 'awesome', and 'tight' to be tired and overused; 'rad' is generally considered to be a much higher praise than the aforementioned superlatives. Also used as a general expression of awe.

2nd definition: Really cool, but in a more subtle way. as opposed to extreme or awesome. one of the highest compliments you can give someone. being rad is like being cool without having to work for it. it's like a natural coolness.

The Toyo 45 AII L where the L means Linhof lens board is ready to accept the standard Linhof lensboard withot any kind of other adapter. This is the only difference.

Oh, ok thanks, man, I kind of wish mine was a Linhof version, the Linhof boards are so much smaller they would fit better in my case...

Really wish I could get my hands on some of the 4 x 5 black and white Polaroid stuff, I have the smaller stuff in both color and black-and-white, and I was able to get my hands on/afford, two boxes of the color 4 x 5, but when I found the black and white stuff I had no money, and now it's filled out and the only place that was still available that I could find...

I know it doesn't matter for checking purposes, but I kind of like the idea of shooting black-and-white 4 x 5 Polaroids, The smaller ones just don't have enough detail, and just aren't big enough for my tastes.

Absolutely love that second one, wow the Polaroid colors are so beautiful... Wish I could even get my hands on one pack in 4x5 to shoot...

How do you guys have so much Polaroid stock? It seems like all the LF guys have an endless supply...

Wow! The composition of both images is really striking and I think the focus is bang on in the second image! I've not seen any 10x8 Polaroids before and I'm not really familiar with the different types. Did you scan these yourself? they look amazing on my 27" iMac. I think the colour of this Polaroid formulation really suit these portraits.

Aaargh it's so frustrating - I wish I could put together an erudite, carefully considered reply. I always struggle to comment on what I'm seeing, it doesn't matter if it's a major piece in a gallery or posted in a forum. Everything I think of saying sounds lame and washed out compared to what I see in front of me so I resort to comments like "it just WORKS".

I agree! I've got 40 sheets of Quickload Velvia 50 coming from Jim Becia but seeing these I want to try some different types.

I've been looking into this film, it seems it was only available in 8 x 10? But not in 4 x 5? Is there another Polaroid number that has a similar look as far as the color tone and range etc. That was the equivalent of this in 4x5? Thanks.

The Type 809 equivalents in the 4x5 size would have been Type 59 and Type 79. Type 59 came first (the pack film equivalent was 669) and 79 was later (pack film equivalent was 690 I believe). An image search for "Polaroid Type 59" should get you lots of examples.

For more than you ever wanted to know about Polaroid films, their "type" numbers and their characteristics, try this site:

I'll chime in with everyone's "brilliant" comments, Stephane. Very nice work. If I might ask, you have very thin depth of field and have nailed it precisely on the model's eyes and hands: did you do anything clever to maintain his position relative to the camera while you were putting in the slide?

Testing out the new (to me) Protar convertible; here it is at the 13" FL, using only the front element.
I like its creamy/sharp character a lot. It's quite a different look than I'm used to, even compared to Commercial Ektars.
This will see a lot of use once the rear element retuns from its re-cementing.

Deardorff - Imagon 250 - HP5+ 5x7 - XTOL 1:1

Very interesting image, I do like the lens distortion work that you've done here, I find the shirt a little bit strange, I guess it's just that her pose is very natural like she's taking a more standard pose, but the shirt being see-through and her having such nice breasts would make me think that this would pose a more... I don't know how to say it not sexually lustful but sort of more playfully sexually oriented, or even sort of playfully innocent because she's so just standing there normal, I find it strange that her shirt is see-through, I think that it's almost as if she didn't know it was going to be see-through when taking a shot and the light was surprised that shown through the clothing.

I guess I would say it's not the image or the lighting itself, it's her stance that throws me off

But I still like the image don't get me wrong.

A very interesting color on this one, Bracan. I wonder if the palette has shifted over time or if this is normal for 809. This model, by the way, looks to me like an edgy version of Novak Djokovic.

My wife making a serious face (for once).

A very interesting color on this one, Bracan. I wonder if the palette has shifted over time or if this is normal for 809. This model, by the way, looks to me like an edgy version of Novak Djokovic.

Thanks Bradley,
Yes, the color are shifting and lost some saturation during time.
Hey, there is some similarity with Novak:)

You are welcome, how do you achieve such portraits? Maybe once you achieve to understand lighting completely. I try but I don't think I can come close to anything like this in the near future. How did you meter? What EV value was the meter showing? I mean how much light is required to get such a picture. If you care to share maybe newbies like me can learn from looking at such classy work.

Cheers

Raffay,
It's not as hard as it might seem.
The light is coming from a window on the left-hand side of the frame. This will give you softer light and shadows will be easier to work with, too.
I used an incident meter and wanted to expose for 1/2 second, which gave me f32. I shot it at exactly that exposure using a lens cap for shutter.
Processed my film normally and made adjustments in Lightroom.
After making basic LR adjustments, there were two hot areas left to deal with: the two sections of her right arm.
I brought those values down a little in LR and tweaked the rest of the photo so it wouldn't look unnatural, and that's it.

I have a lot of bad shots, too, but I don't show these to anyone :)
Find some nice light, not too contrasty, and a model who can sit still for you, and you're most of the way there.
This particular lens does impart a different look, but so will every other lens, and 8x10 is a different look than 4x5, as well.

Thanks - I don't know what you mean with lens distortion except the soft focus effect but apart from that there is no tilt or anything I used. I asked her to take a natural pose, not sexy but self confident so at first you think it's a normal every day portrait. If you look better you see that she shows something very intimate for a woman. This way I tried to symbolise the duality of every day life: a lot of things we do like brushing our teeth, etc... we do on automatic pilot but on the other hand each of those moments are very unique in that they only happen once (at least I believe so :-))
Well, it was only a try :)

Beautiful pose and tones, but the hands? I find the hands are distracting, I wonder if you tried cropping them out?

Yes you're right that she holds her hands a bit weird but I like the 2 white parts (face and hands to opposite with the black schirt) and I like the way she holds her hips. Also perhaps the breasts would then become too central :)

The second one would be pretty great but I don't like how the benches are off center and sort of twisted, I know that you were level with the actual horizon, but something about the position of the camera compared to the benches throws me off.

Actually, I prefer the small towns, I'm not much of a big city person believe it or not, i'd much prefer to live in Vermont somewhere that's far enough away that I can go walking outside in my backyard wearing nothing and have nobody be able to see me (or a model) yet close enough that I can drive at least 30 minutes or less and get to a large convenient store and go shopping etc. and not have to worry about a hospital being too far away either, somewhere in the middle I suppose.

Close enough to actually be able to have access to models to I suppose :)

I'm sure it will be good for your daughter, and I think that's really great!

Er.. whoops you are right it was a kicker, not a rim. I had a grid on it but it still spilled over the side of my head more than I wanted. I should have kept it simple with just the one umbrella I used for key and a piece of white foam to reflect some fill.

I used a string with a piece of tape on it to set focusing distance, measured using a light stand as a stand-in. I put a one of those bellows factor discs on the light stand so I could set focus and adjust my exposure at the same time. You can see my glasses are sharp but actually my eyes are not quite sharp. This was shot at about f19.

Kav are you the guys that had to use the three wheel bike to pick up parts while in afghanistan? I read in an after action report about using a 3 wheeler to go and get parts for planes.

Lots of units worldwide use large tricycles like the one in the photo to move toolboxes and small parts from the hanger to the aircraft. They are super handy. Even more units use old shopping carts. So I can't really say it was this unit you read about.

PeteTsai - really nice photos. I'd be interested to see the lego B&J - is it in your Flickr?

I really like the first photo: the pose, light, and film grain are all very appealing.

So all four of you had large-format cameras with you on that trip?

There are 5 of us, but only 1 camera. My youngest daughter tripped the shutter.

Its not yet, I haven't had a chance to as I was prototyping with the legos to see if the idea would work. I'll put some up in the next few days.
