It was so much fun last year, I can wait!

I'll bring some 8x10 Impossible instant film and processor if anyone wants to try it or have their picture taken. I'm asking $20 a shot (that is cost). I am not an Impossible rep or anything (Impossible I am available :) ) I'll also have some extra gear I'm selling (4x5 and 120 cameras and lenses) and will be sharing a table with Mr. Daniel Stone.

I can also demo lifting Impossible instant film. It really isn't too hard, but there are some tricks I can share.

Orange County being another county from me, I am interested in coming and perhaps bringing my vast collection (not kidding) of pre-cut (by me from unused boards and windows) archival matting blanks, 4 and mostly 8-ply, all cotton rag, buffered, white (matches Westminster bright white rag) museum board (Rising (http://risingmuseumboard.com/products/)), in sizes from 8x10 to 20x24, priced at easily half of whatever the going price is elsewhere. Please let me know if there's any interest, here or via my site.

Any alternate date in case an early Blizzard shuts down all travel? Here in North Dakota that is always a concern...

You might have to fly in early to enjoy the SoCal weather. The show will be super fun.

Hope I can make it to one someday. I had a good time with Jim in the redwoods yesterday...he has some work in front of him -- many many LF and ULF negatives to process (I only have a couple 11x14's and a few 8x10's to deal with!)

My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed the short time we we were able to spend. Why more people don't take advantage of the opportunity to see quality equipment and work, I can't understand. I especially enjoyed meeting Jim and seeing the beautiful cameras he has built. We will certainly be more prepared to attend next year.

Just wish you'd move it out of October ... that is such a good time to go shoot pretty much in every area ... the weather is mellow, the leaves are changing, the days have shortened so the golden hours are closer together and the winter season looms so there's an urgency to get out and get some pictures. The last couple of years I've thought of coming down but have ended up heading out to the North Coast of CA.

Why not move it into the dormant Winter months?

Jim, Dave Schmidt mentioned you. Sorry that I didn't have a chance to say hello. Hope to see you for our upcoming event . We probably had less photographers visiting this year, but sure did have more serious collectors this year .

I thought if anyone would know, this group would. I live in Illinois which is a bit too far to come to your event and get some advice so I thought someone in this group would have a suggestions.

I am assembling a 20 x 24 for shooting film, 100 ASA or faster. I have 1210 Nikor lens - the glass is 4 inches across. What do you suggest for a shutter? Here are the alternatives I know about. I could find a used Packard with an air bulb - but these sound like you really don't have that much control over the speed. I understand that they sell them new and I could get an electrically controlled shutter but it would run about $775.

There seem to be a number of old style shutters that appear on ebay like Ilexpo, "Silent Shutter" made by the Conley Camera Co, rolling shutters. Have people had success with these

There is a modern Sinar Copal shutter ....but I have not been able to determine if it could be fitted to a 4 inch lens. From the photographs it does not look like it is be enough.

Any advice or recommendations appreciated.

Hi Francis,
I have never seen a electronic shutter that big . If you know how to control your developer dilution and develop your film by inspection with the green safe light than you really don't need the shutter. It's a bonus to me, no more no less. Good luck.

Have you set a date for 2014? Knowing that now will give people and spouses time to make plans.

Tri Tran

My pleasure , Francis. It's not that hard as we though . You might try to order some of the Ortho 20x24 film from freestyle to try it out. Iso is about 2-3 and they act just like the wet plate exposure sensitivity. 4-8 sec at plain back light with reflector . The Ortho film has a great tone too.
Terry, thanks for reminding me . 2014 will be another fun year for our SoCal LF and ULF for sure. I will keep you update as I already scheduled a meeting with Hugo , Jim and Hass upcoming week.

Happy Lunar New Year !

We will try to plan ahead a little more. I agree with Tri on the 20x24. If you are doing portraits you will be doing fine shooting wide open. Is that lens F-16? The Ortho film is the way to go. We have a lot of things to schedule for 2014 so stay tuned!

Hi Francis,

If you are creative/inventive, and you probably are if you are building a large camera, you can try to make a type of guillotine shutter to mount on the front of your lens. I've made one in that past and it does work (sorry, don't have pictures right now). Imagine two plane surfaces vertically in front of your lens against each other, one with a hole the size of the lens and the other with a horizontal slot cut in it. Pass the slotted panel in front of the one with the hole cut in it and you will expose the film for the time that the slot moves past the hole. If you design the mechanism to use gravity to pull the slot panel down past the other one, you can get consistant times. I designed mine with several different slot panels of different sized slots to get different shutter speeds. One thing to keep in mind - if you tilt your camera up or down, friction between the two panels will cause your speeds to be inconsistant.

I have seen other verison of this type of shutter before. One inventive photographer on here I believe was selling them and you might want to look around to see if you can find his original posts (like about 2 or 3 years ago).

Hope this helps.
