8x10 film holder confusion

So I bought an 8x10 film holder because I felt like building a pinhole. When I tried to put my 8x10 film in it, it didn't fit, because the holder is 18x24cm and the film is 20.3x25.4cm. They only had 18x24cm 8x10 holders in the shop. Are there two different sizes of 8x10 film, and do I have a lot of strangely sized film, since they only had the wrong holders in the shop?

18x24 is an entirely different format than 8x10. While 8x10 remains popular, 18x24 has all but died out. If the shop sold you an 18x24 holder as an 8x10--they should take it back. As you've found, the films are different sizes.

They did take it back. The thing that confuses me is that the writing on the holder said 8x10 Fidelity Deluxe. If I head out somewhere on the world wide web and buy an 8x10 film holder, it will most likely be 8x10, and not 18x24cm, yes?

Even sellers (on ebay) confuse it all the time, you really have to check the images of the item. 8x10" and 18x24cm film holders have the same outward appearance and size. Both fit into any camera with an international back. Just the inside dimensions differ, so you can slide in 18x24cm film. Usually, there is an additional white stamp "18x24cm", centered below the manufacturer's logo. I have never come across wooden international 18x24cm holders, just the plastic kind.

The above is also true for 4x5"/9x12cm and 5x7"/13x18cm international holders.

18x24cm used to be a very common size in Europe and is still available from almost every major film manufacturer (at least in b/w, I wouldn't know about color). You can get x-ray film in 18x24cm, too.
