View Full Version : Fuji Color Film for the 4x5
Michael Lloyd

Freestyle doesn't have any ISO 50 Fuji film for the 4x5. They list three different ISO 100 color films.
(1) Fujichrome Provia 100F 100 iso 4x5/20 sheets RDPIII
(2) Fujichrome Velvia 100 ISO - 4x5/20 sheets RVP 100
(3) Fujichrome Velvia 100F 100 ISO - 4x5/20 sheets RVP 100F
Does anyone have an opinion of these films? (probably not the best way to word the question but it'll have to do)

What do you want to photograph? Your subject would affect my choice.
For me personally, I've never liked the saturation of Velvia, preferring instead to add it later in my workflow. Provia is more neutral, though it seems to me blues are still quite saturated. Astia was the most neutral of the Fuji slide film, and hence my favorite for what I shoot, but they stopped making it last year... I've been using a lot of Provia instead.

Landscapes, fields of flowers (specifically spring blue bonnets), old but still operable neon signs, nothing specific in mind. I just remembered that I still have about 3 boxes of Quickloads too...
Freestyle's lf film prices are the highest. That's my opinion.

Maybe I should have asked "which 4x5 color film do you prefer (landscape, portrait, etc)" and "do you prefer negative or slide?"
Thanks for the heads up Vinny. I never thought about checking around. The "price" I pay for leaving film I guess (pun intended).
I prefer velvia, the 50 asa version. After that, provia.

Apparently Fuji doesn't make Velvia 50 for 4x5 anymore. But... there are blogs on the web that, earlier this year, say that Fuji is going to continue making Velvia 50. I wonder which is true?

I saw the various web sites that were reporting that Velvia 50 sheet would still be around, and I wanted to believe :) . A month or so ago I sent emails to both Fujifilm Japan and Fujifilm USA, and both replied that Velvia 50 in sheet sizes was no longer being made.

Thats odd, given they've only just redesigned the packaging for it. Would seem a bizarre move to go to the expense of changing the packaging then immediately discontinue it,

The Fuji USA site says that they brought Velvia 50 back
http://www.fujifilmusa.com/products/professional_photography/film/fujichrome/velvia/velvia_50/index.html
B&H Photo shows Velvia 50 in stock in 35mm and 120 roll film sizes when I checked a minute ago.
No mention of that film in sheets in any status.

That's what I'm finding all over the web (except in Japan). 35mm and 120 rolls, no problem. I found a box of 8x10 on Amazon.com here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004XFGEK8/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller=
All sellers were in Japan and the cost is about $35/sheet in round numbers...

I think this is old info from the last time they brought Velvia 50 back, if you follow the links on this page it says that it is available in Quickloads and 8x10. So I'm guessing they don't keep their web site as current as they should

I love slide film for 4x5. I use Velvia with my pinhole cameras, as I think the saturation adds to the definition or perceived sharpness of my images. I have used both the Velvias you listed and like them both. As I understand it, the F is meant to give better skin tones and IMHO it does. I have some Velvia 50 left, but I rarely use it. Saving it, for what I don't know. :-) Here is an image with RVP 100. I can't seem to find any of the Velvia 100F. Anybody else have a shot with this film? These are all nice films. Get one of each and try them all!

Hi Michael,
You might try e-mailing Jim Andrada. He travels (or at least did travel) to Japan a couple of months ago and offered to buy LF film for people, and he might still be doing it. Check out his thread here:

Worth a shot...

I just looked online at a couple of the Japanese stores. They show Velvia 100 in 4x5, 5x7, and 8x10, also showing some Velvia 50 in 4x5 and 8x10 in stock. It will probably be October before I'm in Japan again (used to go at least once a month, but I'm slowing down!)
This is where I recently purchased a large supply of Velvia 50 from - http://www.macodirect.de/fuji-velvia-50br102-127cm-4x520-sheets-p-1716.html
Price has increased by €20 since I ordered from them.

Fuji Japan have consistently stated that Velvia 50, 100 and 100F will continue to be available in 4x5 sheet film, only the quickload versions being discontinued.
See the announcement (translated page from fujifilm.jp) - http://static.timparkin.co.uk/static/tmp/rumours-of-my-demise.html
If you navigate through www.fujifilm.jp using Google translate you will find that both 4x5 and 8x10 are listed as being available for Velvia 50, 100, 100F and Provia 100F
This is what is available from Japan Exposures website - http://www.japanexposures.com/shop/index.php?cPath=25

I wouldn't trust anything a regional distributor says, Fuji UK (a totally separate company just trading under the Fuji name) have been known to "talk out of their arse" before.
What is "available" (currently being manufactured), is different from what can be purchased in a particular country.
The latter depends entirely on what the national distributor chooses to import or not import.

Here is a reply from the "mother ship" (fujifilm.co.jp) on July 30, 2013 regarding sheet Velvia 50:
Dear Robert Biedron
This is the webmaster in FUJIFILM Tokyo.
Thank you for your inquiry.
Unfortunately velvia 50 sheet films are discontinued to manufacture.
As you indicate, some region continue to sell but it is their
inventory so it will be finished soon.
We would like to recommend to use Provia 100F instead of Velvia.
We would like to express our appreciation for your continued
patornage for our products.
Thanks and best regards,
Not the response I was hoping for, but it seems pretty clear there is to be no more beyond current stock.
Bob
I would ask the webmaster to give me the link to the official announcement, I wouldn't expect a webmaster to be knowledgable on the status of Fujifilm products and wouldn't accept his reply to you as being definitive.
I've scoured the Fuji Film Imaging Services website and can only find the February 21 2013 announcement on the discontinuation of 5x7 and quickload Velvia 50, and the change of packaging from April 2013 and price increase (+25%) for Velvia 50 in all other sizes as detailed on Tim Parkin's website which hosts the translated page from the announcements section of the website - http://ffis.fujifilm.co.jp/information/index.html
The current page regarding reversal films (http://fujifilm.jp/personal/filmandcamera/film/reversal/index.html) listing 4x5 and 8x10 Velvia 50 as available and quickload discontinued leads me to believe that the situation is far from "pretty clear there is to be no more beyond current stock".
What was the tagline on the old U.S. TV series "Soap"? ... Confused? you will be ...
