I found a photo that consists of 2 glass plates glued together with a black cardboard pasted on the back. Size 3 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches. The image seems to be on the inside surface of the glass. Can anyone describe the photo process used and time period? It says Marmaduke on the back.

Possibly an ambrotype. 1855 - 1865. Most often, though, they were in cases like a daguerreotype.

The image looks that old but the backing cardboard does not.

Maybe it has been restored. It looks like the belt buckle, clasp and earrings are painted in.

Marmaduke is a town in Arkansas named after a Civil war person, but it was est. 1882, which is probably after the date of the photo.

The logo on the back has a distinctly heraldic look (quartered shield, crown, etc.) and I can't help but wonder if the cardboard was once part of a box for some product like jewelry (or musical instrument accessory--what is that in the lower right quadrant?)

That crown looks an awful lot like the Rolex trademark as well.

I remember cigarillo boxes with logo like that, although they were checkered black/white/red... ;) Too many possibilities

Interesting, a search turns up Marmaduke Daintrey indicates a silver company, ie silverware, silver boxes etc.

So, someone has recycled part of a box to back this old photo and I see the back glass has been hand chipped to size.
