View Full Version : Speed Graphic focal plane materia and pattern?

I was just given a 1943 Speed Graphic with a blown shutter.

I have Tomosy's book in Kindle format but it does not specify the shutter's material except to say a changing bag is the best material, and I'm afraid that is either dated, or not cost effective.

Any help, please?

Thank you,

Jac

The material you want is pneumatic bellows cloth, Player Piano Company 701 East 2nd St. Wichita KS has it
call them to purchase (316 ) 264-0033. if I recall correctly it's the # 50 black cloth, nylon rubberized.
You'll need a minimum of 3 yds since the material is only 50" wide and the FPS for a 4x5 Speed
is 72 " long.

One more thing, I hope all the aperture says are there, you'll need to reuse them, Graflex.org has
a thread or two on rebuilding FPS'.

Thank you very much, Jim. I will check with them after this long weekend.

What great information! In the old days this would be impossible.

Again, Thanks.

Aperture stays... (I think there's a typo in your post)

I was going to mention those but didn't know the proper name.

Again, Thanks.

In the old days you could have ordered one from Graflex or had it installed by a camera shop instead of having
to diy.

Just curious, but if the curtain is 72 inches long (2 yards), where does the third yard get used?

2 yds could be enough depending on how well it was cut, never hurts to a little extra material.
Any that's left over can always be used as bellows liner.

if it's just torn at a stay ..or a few of them
you can repair it by stitching onto it another fabric and smoothing it all out with a cement
both sides of stay even if other side isn't torn
