do yourself a favor while you are there and get out to the Getty Museum.

Visit both Getty Museums (neither are downtown), and the Disney Concert Hall designed by Frank Gehry that is downtown.

Definitely see Venice Beach, just take the 10fwy out to the coast, go south a mile or two on Pacific Ave and you'll dump right into it all.

Park at the library garage (between 5th and 6th on Flower Street) and explore the older part of town. Go East on 5th, 6th, 7th, Wilshire, etc. and also explore the N/S streets that connect them. The Bradbury Building is great, lots of old cinemas, the Jewelry District, the Garment District, etc. If you want to go far enough East to go to skid row with your cameras, that's your business. The area around The Last Bookstore on 5th is a good place to start. Olvera Street and the train station are interesting.

Sket4,
Are you planning on using a large format camera?
If you use a large format camera with a tripod, I would stay out of skid row area. I am not saying that just because many of the skid row residence are down and out, are criminals. There is a lot of drug use in that area, and your photo equipment might look like easy pickings.
If you can, take an assistant with you.
