Hello all,

I have a question regarding the filter size of my lens. Believe, me I googled to the extreme on this one to no avail, also tried the Schneider website which is a little confusing to navigate.

So I'm using a Schneider Kreuznach Symmar 5,6/180 - 12/315 convertible lens. It's for my view camera, btw. Would anyone happen to know what size filter fits?

Any info is greatly appreciated!

This doesn't mention the convertible version, but the 180/5.6 Symmar uses a 58mm thread:

Is there a nearby camera store? They probably have used filters that you could test.

Measure the outside diameter of the front, then select the first filter size smaller than that.
It should be within 2 or 3 millimeters of your measured diameter.

The only possible gotcha is if they no longer make a standard filter for that lens.

None of my Schneider catalogs or brochures show any convertible lenses, suggesting it may be an older product.

I have references showing 180/5.6 with a 58mm filter thread, and others showing 180/5.6 with 67mm threads.
None of those are convertibles, or at least not described as such.

Yes it's M58x0.75 for the 5.6/180 Convertible. Great glass IMHO. And those Convertible Symmars are also among the most compact f/5.6 plasmats ever made.

67mm is definitely the filter size of the Symmar-S 5.6/180. The plain "Symmar" without any "S", "APO", "Super", "HM" should be the original construction, which is "convertible" by removing the front element. According to the vintage lens info from Schneider, this has a 58mm filter thread.

Hello, thank you all for your replies!

Leigh, it is quite an old lens. I read somewhere (can't quite remember where) that it's circa 20 years old. It's in glorious condition and photographs beautifully.

So 58mm it is then. I'll double check just to be sure. Thank you once again everyone!

For future reference you might want to use the URL for vintage Schneider lenses here:
