Can any red bulb be used as safe light, I will be trying x-ray film over the weekend and have to cut an 8x10 green Fuji film into 4x5. Also, is the film speed indicated on x-ray films?

1. A red LED bulb is safe for xray. Kodak tech info sheet recommends 15 watt bulb with kodak GBX filter which is dark red I think?
2. See thread here "Images shot on Xray film" (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?80011-Images-shot-on-X-ray-film&highlight=xray). On the first page they refer to green CXS at iso 80. But read a bit of the thread, speeds in different developers vary quite a bit. Also people use all kinds of dilutions and agitation techniques, up to and including stand development. That will affect your speed too. Finally, note that XR film has emulsion on both sides and extreme care is required to keep scratches to a minimum.

Sorry if it all sounds a bit much- trying to summarizes key points from a 75 page thread in a few sentences! Good luck- and read the thread- super good info. I'm going to dive in to Xray film soon also.

Got the film and the bulb, pics attached. I don't see any speed mentioned on the film box, so how do I rate it? Second, would this bulb do?

Some red bulbs not intended for darkrooms leak white light. This can usually be corrected by painting or taping over the leaks. Also, they may radiate some light to which photo material is sensitive. I usually have a dimmer on the safelights, and reduce the intensity of light to a minimum for convenient work. This works on lamps with filaments, but sometimes not on newer lamps. Placing lamps further from paper or film, or blocking direct light and relying on reflected light, can also reduce intensity.

Ok, I used an iPad app called safe light and cut the film, ,eats hope for the best. The film is in the holders now...any thoughts on what film speed I should set on the meter?
