If you were going to experiment with X-ray film and light sensitive paper, which format would you go with? 5x7 or 8x10? For example, based on availability of these types of film for the two formats short-term and a bit longer term... Hope this question doesn't sound too esoteric! Thanks.

The cost is so low, i intend to do my experimenting with 8x10.

You don't have to cut down 8x10, so I went with 8x10.

I would definitely go with 8x10 in order to avoid having to cut the film down. Apparently x-ray film scratches really easily - best to avoid any extra handling steps.

Great to know. Thanks all. If anyone else has thoughts in this space, keep them coming.

I went with 5X7 just because I happen to already have the camera and holders on hand. I do have an 8 X 10 but is very inconvient to haul when hiking any distance.
Having to cut film wasn't a concern

I am cutting down 7X17 to use in 3 cameras. 2x3, 5X7 and 7X11. So far so good, but it does scratch way easier than my favorite EFKE. Too bad about them.

As soon as I can, I will buy 8X10, not cutting will be nice.

And right now, I am mostly experimenting with 2X3, cheaper than cheap. I think my water costs more, and I get free water...

8x10, without question.

Is cost of film your reason for using X-ray film? If you have to buy a camera and lens or lenses in one size or the other, I would think the higher cost of an 8x10 camera of identical quality and lenses, maybe even an enlarger vs. 5x7 would far outweigh any savings in film. Pick the size that more closely addresses all of your needs.

For full disclosure, I shoot 8x10 and 7x17. I enlarge 8x10 negatives and contact print 7x17. I have never used 5x7. I have not stayed in a Holliday Inn Express since I retired from sales ten years ago, so what do I know?

Cost is not the reason for x-ray film. I simply want to experiment. The good news is I have a new camera coming. It is the venerable Kodak 2D 8x10!

Ah, the old 2D! When I first started 8x10 that's what I used, great camera!
