Is it possible developping 4x5-sheets one by one in 8x10-novatank without scratching?

I suspect for 8x10-sheets the larger tank is needed. Film must always covered or not? Otherwise one side would be unevenly developped.
I could cheaply get the larger one but it was used for c-41. what if i am using b+w chemistry? i fear contamination. Thanks a lot
