Lightware BP1420 backpack

To users of the Lightware BP1420 backpack, some questions.

[1] Once the TS1420 tote shell is fitted to the BP1420, is it exactly equivalent to the MF1420 case? Specifically, does it have the same rigid '5mm thick plastic insert thing' in the lid section? Is it as sturdy and airline-safe as the MF1420?

[2] I only anticipate hiking a few km with the pack, and it wouldn’t be too loaded— Ebony, 4-5 lenses, Quickloads, 6x12 RFH, and other accoutrements. How do you find the harness system, particularly if you are tall (I am 193cm / 6’4”)?

Man your questions are difficult and I have one.



1) I don't know if it's exactly equivalent to a MF1420 because I don't have one of the. It does not have a plastic insert in the lid. Never flew with it.



2) It does carry well on my back with my 4x5, 4 lenses, film, etc. Nice and adjustable. I prefer it to Lowepro backpacks but a "real" backpack would no doubt be more comfortable on long hikes.

Doug, thanks for the reply. Is the 'lid' section on the backpack very rigid and sturdy, like on a suitcase? Or is the lid floppy like on an Omni Trekker etc?

It's flexible, padded, and not too stiff nor is it too floppy. I like mine a lot by the way.

The lid on my BP1420 appears to be the same construction as the MF1420.

It sounds like the BP1420 is as sturdy as the MF1420 then, and could easily be carried in airline checked luggage.

I have travelled with Lightware MF cases in checked luggage without problem -- I have a MF1623 and a friend has the MF1420. But unfortunately there are no BP1420 backpacks in stock in the Sydney stockist (and they are the only one in Australia!) so I can't get to see the backpack before buying. I appreciate the info.
