Hi everyone!
I'm in the process of looking for my first 4x5 camera and am planning on taking lots of night shots, especially using the movements. Thus, I was wondering if you could share some of your large format night shots for inspiration (not just for me, obviously :)
Hopefully I'll be able to add to this thread soon!

I already posted that one but it was just selected to be shown at a local photography gallery's exhibition.
In that case I used the back tilt in the opposite way - to increase the convergence effect.

For a while now I am working on a series of night cityscapes in Hamburg. A nice alternative to landscape photography during the winter season - which is very dark over here.

This one is a recent one from the series: The Hamburg TV tower and the Mövenpick hotel (in an old downtown water tower).

Silverton Night

91645

On Portra 150 with Technika IV, Schneider 150 lens.
Exposed for 4 minutes at halfway between f8 and f11.

My favorite light is the nautical twilight about 42 minutes after official sunset. With the lens set as above, I make three exposures, one at 2 minutes, then 4 minutes, and finally 10 minutes. Usually they all turn out to be usable images.

Really great, who cares if its postcardish, velvia50 or 100?

Times? Just curious, if you remember, was there a polarizer on this?

Yes, the view is really impressive (this is Moscow intl business center, some towers are still under construction).
Shot last week, half of an hour after the sunset. No polarizer, RVP100F plus a warming filter plus some LAB tweaking (sorry, analog purists).

Why warming filter? Isn't V100f already pretty red normally?

swilf
2-Aug-2013, 05:04
I was under the impression that RVP100F is a quite neutral film, though a contrasty one.
The twilight was apparently blue. I can't afford a color meter, so I exposed one side of the holder with a light warming filter, and the second side with a moderate one (85c). The first transparency turned out bluish and dull, and the second one was OK.

HP5 Plus. Actually, Acros is my favorite film for night shot due to its reciprocity characteristics. However, as I'm learning large format, it's a lot easier to make mistakes on a cheaper film!

I scan the negatives, and make prints. I exhibit the prints - the 5x7 color neg stuff will be going in a group show in DC next spring that the large format camera club I belong to will be having. I try to sell them. Why take them? Because I can. Because the color calls out to me. Yeah, it's expensive, but I think the results speak for themselves as to the value. It becomes a special project thing - I have two boxes of 5x7 color neg sitting around ready to shoot, and when I have a good project for them, I'll go ahead and pull them out. These two were shot on the remnants of a box I bought many years ago, when 5x7 Portra was $150/box, not the $300+ it runs now. The film was seriously outdated, so I wanted to see if it was still any good. Obviously, the answer is yes, it is still good even 5+ years out of date.

"Night shots" in the middle of the day...?

Don't know where else to put them - they ar made in an old cave used for chalk production.
Now a place for bats and sculptures...

With very little light!!

So I made a guess: FOMA 100 iso 13x18 neg - Gandolfi camera - TTH RV lens - full aperture (which I was uncertain of what was..).

On both I guessed about 90sec exposure - the one with the sculpture, I used a little torch to paint some extra light on it..

Both half an hour stand development in HC110 - dil.b and then with 100% more water...

A total guess all around - and this came up...

The SF Bay Area LF meetup group got together at the Palace of Fine Arts this past Saturday night. Expect a few more in the upcoming weeks, but I guess I had the most free time to scan and process mine.

I think this turned out the best of the lot:
http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3799/9543752538_10f6ccbebf_z.jpg
250/4.7 Fujinar, f/11 for 90 seconds, Delta 100. I had metered 1 minute, so guessed that 90 seconds would be the correct compensation. Turns out, I was wrong, but I should have metered for about 30 seconds, for which 90 seconds would have been a more accurate compensation for reciprocity failure, so I got a good negative anyway.

This was a little earlier in the evening, so the sky is still very bright compared to the buildings, but at least I was able to do a 1/2 second exposure which kept the moon from blurring:
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7449/9543752056_0049a0e7c7_z.jpg
125mm/5.6 Fujinon-W, f16, 1/2". Delta 100. In theory, even at 1/2", Delta 100 needs a bit of reciprocity compensation, but my old Seiko shutter drags by about 1/3 of a stop at 1/2", so it works out anyway!

And the last one of the night for me:
http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3698/9540963043_d3760fc716_z.jpg
165/3.5 Zeiss Tessar at f/11 and 30 seconds. I don't know if I bumped the camera, or I missed focus, or if the negative just bowed in the holder (a problem with the Microtek M1), but there's nothing in good, sharp focus here. I might have to re-scan the negative.

Corran, just wanted to try how 64T will look when cross processed. Plus I wanted to see picture and I didn't had E6 chemicals, only C41, so i gave a try :)
Lights were tungsten, in some parts of image came out a bit greenish (e.g. bright parts of the house on the left ) - but that can be corrected in post processing.

I've got comments on another forum that it is stupid to waste film and cross it, but i like result and I'll try again.

Especially in winter, I am mostly a night photographer. Here's a shot I did a few weeks ago with my 1845 Ross Petzval, mounted on Chamonix 045n, HP5. I love this lens! It's f2.8 gives very shallow DOF, in addition to the usual Petzval renderings. Since the lens has no shutter or even stops, it is easier to shoot it at night using film speed to control exposure.

Thanks Stone. It was my first visit to Phnom Penh since I took up large format, and I went intending to shoot this. I took several views and actually bracketed exposures (something I never do in daytime), hoping to ensure one really excellent image. In the end almost all looked good (not much difference between 8 seconds and 16 seconds-with 32 seconds lighting up the surroundings a bit too much), and we had a little family discussion (election) about which one to print. So far I've only printed a 5x7 test, which is much better than this crappy scan, and I'm looking forward to printing large.

Here's a snap from Melbourne's 'White Night' all-night arts festival on Saturday. Quite astonishing, with over half a million people wandering through the city looking at contemporary art. This shot was from the second floor of a café, with a Wista 45DXIII & Nikon 135mm f/5.6 on Kodak TXP at f/22 and for 2 minutes and 26 seconds!

Thanks, I was worried that the shallow depth of the "second" exposure would add too much out if focus, but it seems I got the image spot on, and the initial smaller aperture gave it enough sharp character.

I'm going back for more!

I don't think you can effectively rate this film when shooting long exposures and cross-processing at the same time... I have no idea about reciprocity failure, and I also have no idea how the ASA changes when x-processing.

The only thing I got out of these two pictures is that 7mins at f8 brought out a very well lit scene which I had to tone down in order to get the "atmosphere" back in the photo again. Next time I will try 4-5mins at f8.

I have also been using x-pro CDU II in normal circumstances, where it seems to be ok at a 12-25 ASA rating. Will post some portraits soon.

Usually 2 stops over exposure for x-processing. As a rough estimate if I recall correctly.

Just wondering, I know this is an image posting thread, but I was wondering where I would start when metering a night scene? I have a very modern looking railway station that was built recently not far from where I live, I was wanting to make a night shot of it all lit up on Fuji Provia 100F.

My plan was to set-up, compose and focus in the late afternoon, then wait until dusk when ambient and artificial light balances and meter the scene as per normal, shoot as per normal, allowing the brighter artificial lights to burn a bit... I suppose its like everything LF... Trial and Error... Just these days, shooting LF E6 is a wee bit expensive for the old trial and error method of exposure..

richardman
20-Jul-2014, 00:50
Google for some starting timing. Nightscenes (except for the bright city lights) are EV -1000000 or something (OK, I exaggerated) so a meter won't help much. You also need to know about the reciprocity factor (aside: Acros-100 is really good with not much extra exposure needed so may be you should start with that). Also remember that lets say your starting time is 8 minutes, then another 4 minutes would only give you half a stop more. In other words, 8 minutes is not a whole lot different from 9 or even 10 minutes.

alexn
20-Jul-2014, 04:52
I usually shoot Acros 100 as my primary B/W film due to the tones and the great reciprocity, however this particular shot I plan to make with Provia. Reciprocity of Provia is very similar to that of Acros so I at least have that on my side... The train station I intend to photograph is quite bright when all the lights are on... I guess I'll take a series of meter readings around the scene, average them out and see what sort of range I'm dealing with, decide what shadows and highlights I can afford to lose from the image then take that exposure value, add reciprocity and open up the shutter... Worst case, I make one at my desired meter reading, then make another with a stop of extra light... One of them should be useful.. Its very very rare for me to over-expose slides.. I almost always panic, end my exposure too soon and end up with under-exposure

Jmarmck
20-Jul-2014, 05:06
I would not average them out. I would take the brightest spot that you do not want blown out and meter that. Let the blacks fall where they will. It is night after all.

Love these

I have a beginner question.?

For night landscapes, do you take a reading using a lumisphere for incident light where your camera is standing or do you point it towards the subject?

brightmatter

I use a slightly unorthodox method: spray and pray!

Just kidding but I usually play it by ear, using my digital camera as a light meter. With long exposures and high exposure latitude film like Portra there's not too much that can go wrong!

Just kinda look through the night shots and do some research on the web to see what times and apture they were using. City environs you might be able to meter. Country shots, in the middle of nowhere, will be different but on the web you can look at some of the stuff people are doing and dial it in pretty quickly. After dark I start about 30 seconds. One stop above that is 60 seconds, right? So getting right on is not usually a problem. Just set up a special part of your notebook, that you log all your shots in, for night stuff. It will not take long to pretty much dial it in.

Take Care,
Richard

Try the Jiffy calculator for night exposures. Seems dodgy but works a charm. Google it.

Great, thanks guys.
Made myself a Jiffy calculator and will try a star trail tonight with some across 100 @ f9.5 for 4 hours and see what happens.

Good luck!. And let us see the result. I've never tried star trails myself, as I live in places without clear skies, but I meet thinking about shooting the moon. Unfortunately, I don't have any really long lenses, and when I look at what I get on the ground glass with a 210, it aint very big.

If I may suggest a site. This gentleman is on top of night photography and this site has tons of information about night photography. I know that he is using digital but his articles on star scanning are very good. There is nothing that he does that can not largely be done with 4x5.

Yea you need 600mm to even make a decent 5x7 enlargement from 35mm of the moon, someway I'll be able to borrow someone's 720-1200 lens and actually shoot a LF moon.

Here's the moon I shot with 300mm. I was going to do a double exposure but then I forgot and developed it before the second exposure. Whoops!

But this gives you an idea of what a measly 300mm would look like within the full frame...

That reminds me of this image I took a long time ago:

http://www.oceanstarproductions.com/photosharing/moon002ss.jpg

IIRC, I took the first image of the building across the river with a 150mm lens. Then I double-exposed the moon with my Nikkor-T 720mm f/16. It was the first time ever using that lens, and the last for a long time because only my huge Toyo GII monorail could actually focus it, and just barely to infinity, until I got an ext. panel for my Chamonix. Anyway, the film was Fuji 160S, and I largely guessed the exposure (I don't remember either one). The building is the conference center in Savannah, GA.

Yup! That's what I was going for...

Sigh... If I only had a 720mm lens... My Chamonix can accommodate up to 800mm non-telephoto so even a 900 T would probably work, but getting my hands on one CHEAP would be an issue.

Exposures of the moon should be start somewhere in the vicinity of daylight perhaps a tad less. That is, if you want detail like Bryan's. Stone, yours appears to have a nice exposure combo despite the magnification. I would like to try a 360 on the Zone VI.

Thanks unfortunately I've lost my notes on that one with an accidental deletion of a file.

But I think it was f/11@1/125th it was delta100 so souped in Rodinal and rotary processed. That's about all I can say.

Good luck with future moon shots! I probably won't try again but you never know.

Everyone and their mom takes this photo but I hadn't so I went ahead and did it anyway!

This fair/carnival comes to town once or twice a year. The old rides squeak and rattle - I'd never get on one myself! I took this with my Master Technika and 75mm Zeiss Biogon, on Velvia 50:

Nice! I've been there once but not with 4x5, and not at night. It's a good view. Was there anyone else there with you? When I was there in broad daylight I got panhandled several times and didn't particularly feel very safe. Atlanta has changed a lot since when I was young.

I was part of a group, so we didn't get bothered much. This was on a weekend, too, so even more people not from our group came over and started taking pictures. Atlanta may have changed since you were here last, but probably not that much X-)

Try some multiple-short-exposures as well, like 16 1/2 seconds or 32 1/4 seconds on one sheet. Works for water.

What does your MT weigh with your 150 mm lens, or any way you want to weigh it.

Just curious to compare to my Speeders and Horseman.

Thanks in advance

Thnx, Corran! I had a Tech V but sadly sold it to raise funds. Randy: based on my foggy memory the Tech V with a 150mm lens was more than twice the weight of a Speed Graphic.

Corran
3-Nov-2014, 18:37
It's pretty heavy. I don't have a real scale to tell you.

This evening I shot instant film with my Polaroid 900 and 135/3.5. Much lighter! A Speeder is lighter too. But not as accurate if you are shooting with fast apertures...

Tin Can
3-Nov-2014, 19:07
Whoa, I knew they were heavy. I need to handle one someday. Seems, we all want to try the other guy's dreamboat...

I have 50's studio Linhof and they make Sinar feel like toothpicks and playing cards.

Corran
3-Nov-2014, 19:14
That's a great analogy and I would say is comparable to a Master vs. a Speed or similar. Of course I'm also usually sporting a 150mm f/2.8 Xenotar or 250mm f/5.6 Sonnar, either of which weigh about as much as a Speed w/o lens!

I should've gotten a photo last month when I was shooting both my Master and IV, with those two lenses, one thrown over my shoulder and of course shooting with the other. 12 sheets of 4x5 and some Quickloads in a small bag. Fun times! Not for the faint of heart. I was born in the wrong era - I'd have been a good photojournalist back in the day, I think.

I took a few more at the fair Sunday and finally got around to scanning them. Here's two more, and the whole set is on my blog, if you are interested. I tried out shooting with my 58mm XL this time, and wider apertures / shorter exposures (and multiple exposures):
