This is a picture of my 91 y/o aunt, staying in California while the days get longer and the freezing temps of her home town, Juneau, Alaska get more hospitable.

Very nice. I like the contrast there Peter.

I shot this yesterday as an experiment. I used my Polaroid 900 and Xenotar 135mm f/3.5 wide-open, handheld, with Tri-X 320 shot at 200 and developed in Rodinal 1:100 semi-stand for 1 hour. I had two flashes on either side of the church with umbrellas triggered wirelessly for fill light. Here is the result:

@Peter Mounier: She doesn't look like she's 91 - but that's only good. It's a very good portrait.

I took this picture today in the study as an experiment. It turned out quite well, I think. No flash - only two very bright lamps.

Bryan and DavyG
Thank you for your kind comments on my photo.
You sure nailed the lighting and tonal range on your shot Bryan! I love the dynamism there too. Nice shot.

And yours too DavyG, with the angled floorboards, the unusual perspective, and expressive face of Daniela. Very nice.

Another one from the concert I shot Friday. This one also with my Polaroid 900 and Xenotar 135/3.5 wide-open with a couple of flashes on either side of the church. Portra 400NC, outdated and developed at home:

Jonathan - The picture of your camera reminds me of HAL9000, especially juxtaposed with you in the same basic position. It gives the camera a "personality" (you). Neat.

Great concept, Jonathan.

Thanks. This is the first time I played around with this little pocket make-up mirror my wife has. The idea has potential, I think, especially if I can find two contrasting backgrounds to fill the frame(s) with. Next time I head out with the cameras I'll bring it along and see what happens.

I see what you mean about the echoes of "HAL," although that didn't occur to me until you said it. Just another reason it's fun to get other people's perspectives on your own work.

Martin - indeed it helps when model is young and makeup done. However, there is nothing wrong with non blown out older sitters, i assure you :) Film and older non coated lenses are very very forgiving towards skin of any age. Much so than any modern high contrast and specially digital optics/cameras.

Well lucky for me film seems respond similar to light as my digital that i'm pretty comfortable with. Its the mechanics of shooting that are quite a change. Few double exposures, forgetting to close the lens, forgetting to pull the dark slide ect. They all did not turn out that well lol

Ryan: Great first shot! I'm glad that your questions and answers got you to this point as quickly as they did. As to your "mechanical issues" somewhere there is a thread devoted to all of the mistakes we all made, many pages of them. My most recent was setting everything up for a still life, calculating bellows factor and reciprocity, and then taking the picture forgetting to set the shutter speed ... and that's after doing this for 40 (?) years or so. So you are fitting in perfectly!

A couple of portraits I made my 7 year old sit through today, thought I'd share them on the thread.

I love how the paper negs exacerbate the hereditary dark circles under his eyes in the first one and he did really well keeping still through a 15sec exposure! I feel like I am slowly but surely starting to get a grip on this large format stuff though I have a long way to go before I reach the heady heights of some of the guys and girls that post here. Still, shoot for the stars......

Yep! Definitely a whole new process to learn (what with using an outdated and frankly stupid OS as a terminal for scanning) but the kinks are slowly being worked out. It definitely makes fantastic scans though.
You know I've stopped carrying around any cash whatsoever for the most part...so I couldn't have gone in anyway. But that's not really my cup of tea! The guy and I had a nice conversation though about my camera. Talk about a real "strange and weird" looking setup compared to the legion of bargain-DSLR-toting moms out there!

Here's one more snap, same setup. This girl was like a mime combined with a drummer boy or something:

My wife is patient with me at times, especially when I roll over in the morning, see her face and say, "Hold it right there, you look great!" Of course by the time I get the 4x5 set up on the tripod, focus, meter and make the exposure her patience can wear a bit thin.

Greatwork, everybody!

I wanted to address Sergei's two portraits above, the one of Mari and the one of Jenn. Your skin tone rendition is beautiful and exact. What's the secret? Do you print these portraits with darkroom materials? How do they render? Are the scans post processed or is this what the negative looks like?

How do you meter and place the skin tone?

Sorry but I really admire your craft.

Hmm. Thanks :)

I didnt fix the skin tones that much i can tell (i was actually very very surprised on how well Xray managed to hold)..

As of process of shooting - i actually honestly need to think about it. I know for sure that i dont do zone system at all. I am of Dean Collins school more than anything, with bit of Mortensen influence thrown in :) So there is some jiggery / pockery on how i meter portraits, but it sort of started to become second nature, so i dont really do adjustments all that consciously.. I will try to figure it a bit later, i promise.

And no, i gave up on dark room printing - there is just not enough room in my apartment for 8x10 except for contact printing. I only do contacts and now i am in process of ripping apart epson printer to get myself into b&w inking ;) Hope to get it done this weekend. Havent tried to print either one of those images yet.

Sergei,
I hope you don't take this badly as it is meant as constructive criticism. ;-)

The problem I see with your images is always and mainly Photoshop over use.
(I don't quite understand why you keep denying but that is another matter and doesn't have to do with the subject.)

I work in both analog and digital formats so I know about skin retouching techniques (which I use often). I can see you're doing surface blur in your models skin. It is very obvious. I am not against it. I've done it in the past but quit doing it because it ads an unreal effect I don't like.
I understand your models might prefer the retouched version, specially if its final destination is editorial.
In here, I would like to see unedited versions. See the problem is you're using large format but the result looks digital. All the nice features of large format are lost. The Radar is an amazing lens with soft and sharp qualities that are very characteristic.

I think you start up with good ideas and possibilities but end up ruining it in the end. The good thing is you still have a virgin negative :D

Here's an example of the same effect but more lightly done if you still think you like your way better. The blurred layer is blended with the original using layer opacity. This way you retain some of the original film detail.

Dammit.. its too long to edit and reply.

Elena, first of all - thanks, i appreciate chances to learn whenever they present themselves. Secondly - i never did deny that i retouch my images. And no i do not use blur to smooth skin at all, your analysis is incorrect. In fact only blur i do use every now and then - scratch removal, when i am getting bored with taking dust out by hand. This image is a bit odd, b/c range on it when south after downsizing. Thats where you right. I pushed out printed version, should pay more attention in evening, but i goofed. Will recheck. However i strongly dislike to use blurring for skin softening, sorry, so i will stick with techniques i like for now :) But i will revisit image, and make sure that in digital version range is done a bit better.

And here is crop of eye area from image you deemed using blur to soften skin

Dust and scratch removal can introduce a ton of blurring, I've found, but not always in a bad way. Personally, I really like the look of your portrait, Sergei, and think the tones work quite effectively. I would add that, while it may be important to preserve the characteristics that LF offers for images posted on this forum, I don't believe that quite as true with the viewing public in general.

they are kinda getting weird in shadows. I like to use very very subtle shadow/light bits in background and they getting banding in there, even when editing is in 16 bit mode :( But not always, luckily :)

As of rest.. Well.. i just think that there are many schools of thought on this matter. Some people dont mind red eyelids and pink noses.. some do.. Some like hairy armpits, and others do get grossed out about it :)

May thousand flowers blossom, may thousand schools prosper :)

I've read all of his books. I would love to hear how you came to be able to meet Redmond, and then of course make another fabulous image. You're at the top of the food chain for wet plate Alex. Keep up the great work and do tell the story if it is something that is open to be shared. If not I understand.

Absolutely wonderful,

I am not quite sure.. I know many people who are lucky to be blessed with access to really gorgeous models from agencies & etc.. In my case.. I am not super sociable, and a quite shy.. Photography helps me to fight both as i am forced to go to events, gallery openings & etc :) So its more of just forcing myself plus now its got to point where its word of mouth (plus some people getting referred through retro/burlesque grapevine :)).

For an expired film, it still performed well. I'll like to know how you maintained temperature with hand developing C41.Thanks.

I didn't. Here's the facts:

my Tetenal C-41 kit was mixed May 2012. I am still using it today.
I originally went for the 8 minutes at 30c development method, a temperature easy to reach and maintain (+/- 1c).
every new development cycle, I was adding 10-15% of extra time.
I didn't use the chemicals for a 6-month period, and when I re-used them, I just went straight to 13 minutes at 30c (+/- 1c).
in the past two development cycles I misjudged the temperature, which was as low as 27c at some point, and I added extra time (couple of minutes), with no particular calculations.
the negatives keep coming out fine.

Considering that I am mostly cross-processing expired slide film, I am totally blown out by the fact that the chemicals keep on going strong almost one year after they were mixed, and by the fact that time and temperature (after you've reached a certain point) do not seem to affect the resulting images. Grain and resolving power are not great but this may be a characteristic of the slide film. In the past days I've shot a few Vericolor 160 sheets, normal negative film, we'll see how this develops.

It must be something about this particular slide film (kodak ektachrome duplicating slide film 6121). Here is also a much better image, scanned with the Epson V700 4x5 film holder (hence, no borders) but with all the edge reflections gone: http://www.flickr.com/photos/thicktheo/8591198911/in/photostream (can't upload it in this thread, it's not a portrait :D). This was also developed in a quite sloppy manner, temperature starting at ~28c and raising to ~30 in 13-14 minutes (I put the Jobo developing tank in hot water). I also blix for 15-20 mins without a lot of agitation, can't see anything wrong with the results.

Thanks Theo for the explanation. Much appreciated. Make me want to attempt developing E6 this way. I have a Jobo, but just cumbersome.

I also use the Jobo tank, but I don't have a CPP system, so I just fill it up with 1.5lt of chemicals (either color or b/w). No serious problems encountered.

Looks great Bracan! By the way, I talked to Impossible Project this morning about the color shade development time. They informed me that because the developer is liquid/fluid it is sensitive to movement and light. After 5 minutes however it can be removed from the processor and gently placed on something black in a dark area to finish cooking. This was good to hear as I was afraid of having to wait 45 minutes per shot.

I like that. A portrait with an obscured face. Nicely done.

Things have warmed up enough here in Maine to be springlike; almost warm enough to use instant film (I brought it inside to develop and peel) Snow is mostly gone and I need to get used to color again. The green stuff in the background is not green grass but mostly moss.
