View Full Version : Long lens for 5x7
Hey all, I'm about to be in the market for a longer lens for my 5x7. Currently I'm shooting a 210 doing land/seascapes but the foreground dominates the image. I've been thinking about the Nikkor M 300mm or the Fujinon T 400mm. What would you guys suggest as a long lens for this kind of work?

I have a 19" Artar on my Linhof and quite like it. I've tried the 24" and it works OK at landscape distances but I find it a bit longer than I really like. Great on the 8 x 10 though.
I use the fuji 450C as a long lens on my 5x7.

The Fujinon 400T is a large, heavy weight lens. It's not all that sharp
The Nikon/Nikkor 300M is the better option.

There is a 14" Artar on A**g for $90.00 right now....
Decided to go with the Nikon M 300mm, got it for a steal! Do you guys think it'll be a big difference from a 210mm? I just want to get the foreground out of the picture and focus in on the further distanced stuff. I think a Fuji C 450mm would be great, but it's out of my price range right now.

In my experience, i have not found a big difference between a 210 and a 300 for 5x7. There is an appreciable difference when you use a 400 or 450.
But maybe the 300 is just enough for the compositions you are looking for.

How long are your bellows, anyway? I'd prefer a minimum being one half again the length of the lens---450mm of bellows for a 300mm, 600mm of bellows for a 400mm lens. Just sayin'
I've got 480mm to play around with, looks like the 300mm will be a good fit!

Over the years, the longer focal length lenses preferred is 300mm or 12" and 480mm or 19" along with the 210mm or 8 1/2".
If carrying a single lens longer than 210mm or 8 1/2", it would be a 360mm or 14".
The 300mm on 5x7 is similar to a 210mm on 4x5.

I see, would a 300mm be a good standard lens for 5x7 then? I've shot with 180mm and 210mm on the format so far.

Make some images and go from there.
My two most often used on 5x7 is 12" or 300mm and 8 1/2" or 210mm.
It is a matter of front to back perspective that one is looking for in the finished image.

Noah,
The 300 is approximately a 50% increase over the 210, the 450 is another 50% plus over the 300. If the time comes, the Fuji is a wonderful length on the 5x7, at least to me. I use a 150, 210, 300, and, a 450 with the 5x7. Basically trying to increase each focal length approximately 50%.
