    Re: November 2017 Portraits

Oh, not a criticism, Mark - I've just spent weeks sorting a 'new to me' scanner at something approaching a sane price. I just wondered if it was a process issue but looking closer it does appear to be a scanner problem.

I guess that scanning in greyscale will hide it a little (and reduce the image storage size somewhat) but it's possible it's an issue with the scanner calibration. For platten scans most scanners have a concealed white strip under the top edge of glass, and that bit is scanned first to calibrate the sensor's differing sensitivity between cells. It's possible that there's some discolouration on there for some reason. Easy to check *if* you're handy and confident with dismantling electronics, but not recommended otherwise.

I've had that danged scanner apart sooo many times, Neil! Never solved that banding problem, though... Fortunately, it's only noticeable in the close-up details.

8X10" Collodion tintype, shot with my Kodak Ektar 12" lens at f6.3 (wide open). Exposure was a grueling three minutes, which explains the motion blur. I don't like the look of strobe + collodion, so I use a softbox that utilizes compact fluorescent bulbs; its slow. I need to find a better source of continuous lighting....

I LOVE this, excellent textures all around. Perfect shutter speed as well.

Every now and again I get thin stripes like that.
I read somewhere a while back it could have to do with dust that is in the calibration area when the scanner turns on. I've gotten into the habit of cleaning the edges before turning it on and that seems to fix the issue... Of course, if you've already tried that then I have no further suggestions
