Been exploring the forum and came across this. If I could be in its presence I'd just ogle and salivate.

HI Blue4130, sorry for the late reply. Frica is quite well designed and very compact. I brought one of their original version and took the back to do the conversion. The front standard of their original version was not strong enough for large lenses, but I am told that they have improved it.

Radii, I agree with everyone else so my comments are less than mere flea bites!

Is there any logic in the lattice of the base? Based on stress analysis or just your artistic temperament showing through!?

The decoration has its costs, as I would not like the job of cleaning all these details a century from now!

    That's a good question !

The short answer would be that form does not always follow function. There's a lot of hot, artistic air in the design of the base.

I wanted the camera to have a coherent look when folded, so the base should match the rear standard in size, but a solid sheet of 1/4' aluminium would be too heavy. Hence some cutouts had to be made.
Structurally, I think I hit all the important stress points. In actual use, the camera is very rigid, but the Art Deco inspired lattice has nothing to do with.

Btw, the movable front standard carriage not integrating artistically into the base design when retracted and the camera is folded up and seen from below, always bothered me, but there was just no way to work around the straight lines of the linear bearings.

Yes, machining the aluminum with all those grooves was definitely a costly endeavor (many bits were used), if the camera is still around 100 years from now and someone decides to give it some TLC, I'd be flattered however ;-)

    Trivet.

Just kidding! But who knows what that beautiful base will be in 100 years.

    Well done!
