Contemplating the move up from MF to 4x5 for studio use

Hi all--

Complete LF novice here, looking at 4x5 monorails.

I've used a medium format TLR for about a decade now, and just recently started shooting studio portraiture--thought I might as well try a bigger negative if the camera is going to sit on a tripod all day.

Also:

Years ago I picked up a Zeiss Taxo 9x12 plate camera for free--not a fancy camera but I always meant to try using it. I can't seem to find the correct holders and thought I'd try here.

I also have an interest in the old three-color separation process and am interested in someday building a one-shot camera with mirrors or a beam-splitting prism. Thought I'd work my way up via simpler LF camera projects--pinholes, box cameras, etc.

Welcome Darby! I would certainly suggest working with a 4x5 monorail to get started. There are many options and it's relatively inexpensive. If you like large format, you could gradually figure out the more esoteric gear and processes. You may want to search past threads on this forum for discussions of gear, films, and developing methods.

Yep--I'm doing that now, thanks, looking at the 'best starter lens' thread at the moment...doing research now, it will probably be quite a while until I actually buy something (unless one of the afore-mentioned 9x12 holders shows up).

As well as searching the site, also have a look at the LF Home Page: http://www.largeformatphotography.info/

Enough information to keep you occupied for awhile and it will give you a better understanding of choices to be made.

You might also want to include your location in your profile, as members here are a far flung lot and it might be someone in the neighbourhood who could provide more insight.
