epson v750 grinding noise. any help?

when i turn on my scanner it starts to make this grinding noise. when it turns on, the lower scanning unit moves to the starting position but it keeps trying to go forward even though it has no room to go. it then makes a grinding noise because it keeps trying to move. i took off the glass and tried to see if anything was blocking it but i could not find anything. if anyone has had this problem and knows how to fix it please let me know.
    thanks

Strange, because you are describing a textbook case of a locked scanner bed.
Sorry I can't be of more help, I'm afraid you'll have to call Epson.

that is what i originally thought so i took the glass top off so i could check and make sure the belt was not slipping. do you know if there is supposed to be some sort of switch or stopper that tells the scanner when to stop before hitting the end of the rail?

I put up some exploded diagrams at the following link which might help you investigate your question about the switch.

    http://www.betterscanning.com/scanning/dismantling.html

If you have run a gazillion scans on this unit, it may just need some lubrication on the guide rails with a super light lubricant applied sparingly with a towel.

thanks doug. i used those to figure out how to take off the glass top. i tried taking off the belt drive clip and putting it back on thinking that could of been the problem. that did not help. i feel like it is the software telling the scanner to keep moving forward. i also tried taking off the glass and moving the lower scanner all the way to the front of the scanner. i then turned it on and it moved to the start position fine with no grinding noise. i turned it off and turned it back on again and it made the grinding noise again trying to move the scanner all the way to the back of the unit.

is there a master reset or anything like this?
    hope some of this help

I have the same intermittent problem with my V700. Note that the issue might go away for some time and then suddenly reappear.
Curiously what I have found to work is to put the scanner on its side (left side when loking at the front of the scanner) while the scanner is being power on and when the lamp start to warm-up (Vuescan tells you that the lamp is warming-up) at which point I put it back and put the holders. Once you have done that, the scanner will be good for as long as you want until you turn it off and let it cool down.
I have considered sending the scanner for repair but it works otherwise perfectly with a good calibration that allow me to use the Epson 4x5 holders without the need for the cumbersone Betterscanning 4x5 holders (I do use the Betterscanning MF holder that are a lot beefier than the Epson MF joke).

Hope it might work for you also.

    Cheers,
